Job 38
After thirty-five chapters of human argument, the LORD finally speaks, "out of the whirlwind" (v.1). He never explains Job's suffering. Instead he fires back a relentless catalogue of questions about creation: Where were you when I laid the earth's foundations? Who shut the sea behind doors? Have you commanded the morning? Read it as a guided tour Job could never have given: dawn, the deep, snow stored against the day of battle, the Pleiades and Orion, and the lioness's hunt. The point is the gap between what Job knows and what governs the world.

Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind,

“Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
- 3
Brace yourself like a man, for I will question you, then you answer me!

“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding.
- 5
Who determined its measures, if you know? Or who stretched the line on it?
- 6
What were its foundations fastened on? Or who laid its cornerstone,
- 7
when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
- 8
“Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke out of the womb,
- 9
when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness,
- 10
marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors,
- 11
and said, ‘You may come here, but no further. Your proud waves shall be stopped here’?

“Have you commanded the morning in your days, and caused the dawn to know its place,
- 13
that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and shake the wicked out of it?
- 14
It is changed as clay under the seal, and presented as a garment.

From the wicked, their light is withheld. The high arm is broken.
- 16
“Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep?
- 17
Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?
- 18
Have you comprehended the earth in its width? Declare, if you know it all.
- 19
“What is the way to the dwelling of light? As for darkness, where is its place,
- 20
that you should take it to its bound, that you should discern the paths to its house?
- 21
Surely you know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great!
- 22
Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, or have you seen the storehouses of the hail,
- 23
which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
- 24
By what way is the lightning distributed, or the east wind scattered on the earth?
- 25
Who has cut a channel for the flood water, or the path for the thunderstorm,
- 26
to cause it to rain on a land where there is no man, on the wilderness, in which there is no man,

to satisfy the waste and desolate ground, to cause the tender grass to grow?

Does the rain have a father? Or who fathers the drops of dew?

Whose womb did the ice come out of? Who has given birth to the gray frost of the sky?

The waters become hard like stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen.

“Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion?
- 32
Can you lead the constellations out in their season? Or can you guide the Bear with her cubs?
- 33
Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you establish its dominion over the earth?

“Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover you?
- 35
Can you send out lightnings, that they may go? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?
- 36
Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the mind?

Who can count the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the containers of the sky,
- 38
when the dust runs into a mass, and the clods of earth stick together?

“Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,
- 40
when they crouch in their dens, and lie in wait in the thicket?
- 41
Who provides for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry to God, and wander for lack of food?

Quem determinou as suas medidas, se é que você sabe? Ou quem estendeu a linha de medir sobre ela?

Sobre o que os seus fundamentos foram firmados? Ou quem assentou a sua pedra angular,

quando as estrelas da manhã cantavam juntas, e todos os filhos de Deus davam gritos de alegria?

“Ou quem encerrou o mar com portas, quando ele irrompeu do ventre,
- 9
quando fiz das nuvens a sua vestimenta, e o envolvi em densa escuridão,
- 10
tracei para ele o meu limite, coloquei trancas e portas,
- 11
e disse: ‘Você pode vir até aqui, mas não além disso. Aqui pararão as suas ondas orgulhosas’?

“Você já deu ordens à manhã em seus dias, e fez a alva conhecer o seu lugar,
- 13
para que ela pudesse agarrar as extremidades da terra, e sacudir dela os ímpios?
- 14
Ela se transforma como o barro sob o selo, e se apresenta como uma vestimenta.
- 15
Dos ímpios, a sua luz é retida. O braço levantado é quebrado.

“Você já entrou nas nascentes do mar? Ou já caminhou pelas profundezas do abismo?
- 17
As portas da morte já foram reveladas a você? Ou você já viu as portas da sombra da morte?
- 18
Você já compreendeu a terra em sua largura? Declare, se você sabe tudo isso.

“Qual é o caminho para a morada da luz? Quanto às trevas, onde é o seu lugar,
- 20
para que você as conduza ao seu limite, e para que você discirna os caminhos para a sua casa?
- 21
Certamente você sabe, pois você já havia nascido então, e o número dos seus dias é grande!

Você já entrou nos depósitos da neve, ou já viu os armazéns do granizo,
- 23
que eu reservei para o tempo da angústia, para o dia da batalha e da guerra?
- 24
Por qual caminho se distribui o relâmpago, ou o vento leste se espalha sobre a terra?

Quem abriu um canal para as águas da enchente, ou o caminho para a tempestade de trovões,

para fazer chover sobre uma terra onde não há ninguém, sobre o deserto, no qual não há homem algum,

para saciar a terra devastada e desolada, e fazer brotar a tenra relva?

Acaso a chuva tem pai? Ou quem gera as gotas de orvalho?

De qual ventre saiu o gelo? Quem deu à luz a geada cinzenta do céu?

As águas se tornam duras como pedra, quando a superfície do abismo se congela.

“Você pode atar o aglomerado das Plêiades, ou soltar as cordas de Órion?
- 32
Você pode fazer sair as constelações na sua estação? Ou pode guiar a Ursa com os seus filhotes?
- 33
Você conhece as leis dos céus? Pode estabelecer o seu domínio sobre a terra?

“Você pode levantar a sua voz até as nuvens, para que a abundância de águas o cubra?
- 35
Você pode enviar os relâmpagos, para que eles partam? Eles lhe dizem: ‘Aqui estamos’?

Quem colocou sabedoria no íntimo? Ou quem deu entendimento à mente?

Quem pode contar as nuvens com sabedoria? Ou quem pode despejar os cântaros do céu,

quando o pó se transforma em uma massa, e os torrões de terra se apegam uns aos outros?

“Você pode caçar a presa para a leoa, ou satisfazer o apetite dos leões jovens,
- 40
quando eles se agacham em seus covis, e ficam à espreita nos matagais?
- 41
Quem provê para o corvo a sua presa, quando os seus filhotes clamam a Deus, e andam errantes por falta de comida?
Answering a question with questions
Job had demanded a hearing, a chance to argue his case. God grants the encounter but inverts it: "I will question you, then you answer me" (v.3). The plaintiff becomes the witness who cannot answer.
The questions move outward from cosmic architecture to weather to wild animals, ending with the raven's young crying to God for food (v.41). By the close, the issue is no longer Job's innocence but whether a creature who cannot feed the ravens is positioned to judge how the world is run.
