John 13
The supper before Passover opens the long farewell. Jesus rises, lays aside his garments, and washes the disciples' feet, including Judas'. Peter first refuses, then overcorrects, asking for hands and head too. The foot-washing becomes a teaching on service, then the meal turns dark: Jesus names a betrayer, hands Judas the morsel, and Judas goes out into the night.

Now before the feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his time had come that he would depart from this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him,

Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came from God and was going to God,
- 4
arose from supper, and laid aside his outer garments. He took a towel and wrapped a towel around his waist.
- 5
Then he poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

Then he came to Simon Peter. He said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?”

Jesus answered him, “You don’t know what I am doing now, but you will understand later.”
- 8
Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I don’t wash you, you have no part with me.”
- 9
Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”
- 10
Jesus said to him, “Someone who has bathed only needs to have his feet washed, but is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you.”

For he knew him who would betray him; therefore he said, “You are not all clean.”
- 12
So when he had washed their feet, put his outer garment back on, and sat down again, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you?

You call me, ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord.’ You say so correctly, for so I am.
- 14
If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
- 15
For I have given you an example, that you should also do as I have done to you.
- 16
Most certainly I tell you, a servant is not greater than his lord, neither is one who is sent greater than he who sent him.

If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
- 18
I don’t speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me.’

From now on, I tell you before it happens, that when it happens, you may believe that I am he.
- 20
Most certainly I tell you, he who receives whomever I send, receives me; and he who receives me, receives him who sent me.”

When Jesus had said this, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, “Most certainly I tell you that one of you will betray me.”

The disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom he spoke.

One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was at the table, leaning against Jesus’ chest.

Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, and said to him, “Tell us who it is of whom he speaks.”
- 25
He, leaning back, as he was, on Jesus’ chest, asked him, “Lord, who is it?”
- 26
Jesus therefore answered, “It is he to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.

After the piece of bread, then Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.”
- 28
Now nobody at the table knew why he said this to him.
- 29
For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus said to him, “Buy what things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.

Therefore having received that morsel, he went out immediately. It was night.
- 31
When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.
- 32
If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him immediately.

Little children, I will be with you a little while longer. You will seek me, and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you can’t come,’ so now I tell you.

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another.
- 35
By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered, “Where I am going, you can’t follow now, but you will follow afterwards.”

Peter said to him, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for me? Most certainly I tell you, the rooster won’t crow until you have denied me three times.

Jesus lhe disse: “Aquele que já se banhou só precisa lavar os pés, pois está completamente limpo. Vocês estão limpos, mas não todos.”

Pois ele sabia quem o trairia; por isso disse: “Nem todos vocês estão limpos.”
- 12
Então, quando ele terminou de lavar os pés deles, vestiu novamente sua veste exterior e assentou-se outra vez, e lhes disse: “Vocês sabem o que eu lhes fiz?

Vocês me chamam de ‘Mestre’ e ‘Senhor’. Vocês dizem corretamente, pois eu o sou.
- 14
Se eu, então, o Senhor e o Mestre, lavei os pés de vocês, vocês também devem lavar os pés uns dos outros.
- 15
Pois eu lhes dei um exemplo, para que vocês também façam como eu lhes fiz.
- 16
Com toda a certeza lhes digo: um servo não é maior do que o seu senhor, nem o enviado é maior do que aquele que o enviou.
- 17
Se vocês sabem destas coisas, bem-aventurados são se as praticarem.
- 18
Não falo a respeito de todos vocês. Eu sei a quem escolhi; mas para que a Escritura se cumpra: ‘Aquele que come pão comigo levantou contra mim o seu calcanhar.’

Desde agora, eu lhes digo antes que aconteça, para que, quando acontecer, vocês creiam que eu sou.
- 20
Com toda a certeza lhes digo: quem recebe aquele que eu enviar, recebe a mim; e quem me recebe, recebe aquele que me enviou.”

Quando Jesus disse isso, ele angustiou-se em espírito e testificou: “Com toda a certeza lhes digo que um de vocês me trairá.”

Os discípulos olhavam uns para os outros, perplexos sobre de quem ele falava.
- 23
Um dos seus discípulos, a quem Jesus amava, estava à mesa, reclinado no peito de Jesus.

Simão Pedro, portanto, fez-lhe um sinal e disse-lhe: “Diga-nos quem é aquele de quem ele fala.”

Ele, reclinando-se, assim como estava, no peito de Jesus, perguntou-lhe: “Senhor, quem é?”

Jesus, portanto, respondeu: “É aquele a quem eu der este pedaço de pão depois de molhá-lo.” Então, tendo molhado o pedaço de pão, ele o deu a Judas, filho de Simão Iscariotes.

Depois do pedaço de pão, então Satanás entrou nele. Então Jesus lhe disse: “O que você vai fazer, faça depressa.”

Ora, ninguém à mesa sabia por que ele lhe dissera isso.

Pois alguns pensavam que, como Judas tinha a caixa de dinheiro, Jesus lhe dissera: “Compre o que precisamos para a festa”, ou que ele deveria dar algo aos pobres.

Portanto, tendo recebido aquele bocado, ele saiu imediatamente. Era noite.

Quando ele saiu, Jesus disse: “Agora o Filho do Homem foi glorificado, e Deus foi glorificado nele.

Se Deus foi glorificado nele, Deus também o glorificará em si mesmo, e o glorificará imediatamente.

Filhinhos, estarei com vocês por mais um pouco de tempo. Vocês me buscarão, e como eu disse aos judeus: ‘Para onde eu vou, vocês não podem ir’, assim agora eu digo a vocês.

Um novo mandamento lhes dou: que vocês se amem uns aos outros. Assim como eu os amei, que vocês também se amem uns aos outros.

Nisto todos conhecerão que vocês são meus discípulos, se tiverem amor uns pelos outros.”

Simão Pedro lhe disse: “Senhor, para onde vais?” Jesus respondeu: “Para onde eu vou, você não pode me seguir agora, mas me seguirá depois.”

Pedro lhe disse: “Senhor, por que não posso te seguir agora? Eu darei a minha vida por ti.”

Jesus lhe respondeu: “Você dará a sua vida por mim? Com toda a certeza lhe digo: o galo não cantará até que você me negue três vezes.
A new commandment, and a warning
After Judas leaves, Jesus gives "a new commandment, that you love one another" (v. 34), the mark by which all will recognize his disciples. Love is set against the betrayal just enacted at the same table.
The chapter ends with Peter's bold vow to lay down his life, met by Jesus' forecast that the rooster won't crow until Peter denies him three times.
