John 15
Jesus gives the image of the true vine: the Father is the farmer, the disciples the branches, and fruit comes only by remaining in him. Pruning and being cut off run side by side as the two outcomes for branches. The tone then shifts. After calling the disciples friends rather than servants, Jesus warns that the world will hate them as it first hated him.

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the farmer.
- 2
Every branch in me that doesn’t bear fruit, he takes away. Every branch that bears fruit, he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

You are already pruned clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.
- 4
Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me.

I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

If a man doesn’t remain in me, he is thrown out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned.

If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you.

“In this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; and so you will be my disciples.
- 9
Even as the Father has loved me, I also have loved you. Remain in my love.

If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, even as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love.

I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be made full.

“This is my commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you.

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
- 14
You are my friends if you do whatever I command you.
- 15
No longer do I call you servants, for the servant doesn’t know what his lord does. But I have called you friends, for everything that I heard from my Father, I have made known to you.

You didn’t choose me, but I chose you and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain; that whatever you will ask of the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

“I command these things to you, that you may love one another.
- 18
If the world hates you, you know that it has hated me before it hated you.
- 19
If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, since I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his lord.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.

But they will do all these things to you for my name’s sake, because they don’t know him who sent me.

If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have had sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.

He who hates me, hates my Father also.
- 24
If I hadn’t done among them the works which no one else did, they wouldn’t have had sin. But now they have seen and also hated both me and my Father.

But this happened so that the word may be fulfilled which was written in their law, ‘They hated me without a cause.’

“When the Counselor has come, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will testify about me.

You will also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.

“Eu sou a videira verdadeira, e meu Pai é o agricultor.

Todo ramo em mim que não dá fruto, ele corta. Todo ramo que dá fruto, ele limpa, para que dê mais fruto.

Vocês já estão limpos por causa da palavra que lhes tenho falado.
- 4
Permaneçam em mim, e eu permanecerei em vocês. Como o ramo não pode dar fruto por si mesmo, a menos que permaneça na videira, assim também vocês não podem, a menos que permaneçam em mim.

Eu sou a videira. Vocês são os ramos. Aquele que permanece em mim, e eu nele, esse dá muito fruto, pois sem mim vocês não podem fazer nada.

Se alguém não permanecer em mim, será lançado fora como um ramo e secará; e eles os ajuntam, lançam no fogo, e são queimados.

Se vocês permanecerem em mim, e as minhas palavras permanecerem em vocês, pedirão o que quiserem, e lhes será feito.

“Nisto meu Pai é glorificado: que vocês deem muito fruto; e assim serão meus discípulos.
- 9
Assim como o Pai me amou, eu também amei vocês. Permaneçam no meu amor.

Se vocês guardarem os meus mandamentos, permanecerão no meu amor, assim como eu tenho guardado os mandamentos de meu Pai e permaneço no seu amor.

Tenho dito estas coisas a vocês para que a minha alegria permaneça em vocês, e para que a alegria de vocês seja completa.

“Este é o meu mandamento: que vocês amem uns aos outros, assim como eu os amei.
- 13
Ninguém tem maior amor do que este: de dar alguém a sua vida pelos seus amigos.

Vocês são meus amigos, se fizerem o que eu lhes mando.
- 15
Já não os chamo de servos, porque o servo não sabe o que o seu senhor faz. Mas eu os tenho chamado de amigos, pois tudo o que ouvi de meu Pai, eu lhes dei a conhecer.

Vocês não me escolheram, mas eu os escolhi e os designei, para que vão e deem fruto, e para que o fruto de vocês permaneça; a fim de que tudo o que pedirem ao Pai em meu nome, ele lhes conceda.

“Estas coisas eu lhes mando: que amem uns aos outros.
- 18
Se o mundo os odeia, saibam que ele me odiou antes de odiar vocês.
- 19
Se vocês fossem do mundo, o mundo amaria o que era seu. Mas porque vocês não são do mundo, pois eu os escolhi do mundo, por isso o mundo os odeia.
- 20
Lembrem-se da palavra que eu lhes disse: ‘O servo não é maior do que o seu senhor.’ Se eles me perseguiram, também perseguirão vocês. Se guardaram a minha palavra, também guardarão a de vocês.

Mas eles farão todas essas coisas a vocês por causa do meu nome, porque não conhecem aquele que me enviou.
- 22
Se eu não tivesse vindo e falado a eles, não teriam pecado; mas agora eles não têm desculpa para o seu pecado.

Aquele que me odeia, odeia também a meu Pai.
- 24
Se eu não tivesse feito entre eles as obras que nenhum outro fez, não teriam pecado. Mas agora eles viram e odiaram tanto a mim quanto a meu Pai.

Mas isso aconteceu para que se cumprisse a palavra que está escrita na lei deles: ‘Odiaram-me sem motivo.’

“Quando vier o Conselheiro, que eu enviarei a vocês da parte do Pai, o Espírito da verdade, que procede do Pai, ele testemunhará a meu respeito.

E vocês também testemunharão, porque estão comigo desde o princípio.
Remaining, then resistance
The vine teaches dependence: "apart from me you can do nothing" (v. 5). Remaining in his love is tied to keeping his commandments, with love for one another as the central command.
The chapter pivots from intimacy to hostility. The same disciples chosen out of the world will be persecuted for his name, yet the promised Spirit of truth will testify, and so will they.
