The LORD’s word came to Jonah the second time, saying,

“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I give you.”

So Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh, according to the LORD’s word. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey across.

Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried out, and said, “In forty days, Nineveh will be overthrown!”

The people of Nineveh believed God; and they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from their greatest even to their least.

The news reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, took off his royal robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

He made a proclamation and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, “Let neither man nor animal, herd nor flock, taste anything; let them not feed, nor drink water;
8
but let them be covered with sackcloth, both man and animal, and let them cry mightily to God. Yes, let them turn everyone from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.
9
Who knows whether God will not turn and relent, and turn away from his fierce anger, so that we might not perish?”
10
God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way. God relented of the disaster which he said he would do to them, and he didn’t do it.

Jonas 3 (WPB)

A palavra do SENHOR veio a Jonas pela segunda vez, dizendo:

“Levante-se, vá à grande cidade de Nínive, e pregue a ela a mensagem que eu lhe dou.”

Então Jonas se levantou e foi a Nínive, de acordo com a palavra do SENHOR. Ora, Nínive era uma cidade extremamente grande, de três dias de caminhada.

Jonas começou a entrar na cidade, caminhando a distância de um dia, e clamou, dizendo: “Em quarenta dias, Nínive será destruída!”

O povo de Nínive creu em Deus; e proclamaram um jejum e vestiram-se de pano de saco, desde o maior até o menor deles.

A notícia chegou ao rei de Nínive, e ele se levantou do seu trono, tirou o seu manto real, cobriu-se de pano de saco e sentou-se sobre cinzas.

Ele fez uma proclamação e a publicou por toda Nínive, por decreto do rei e de seus nobres, dizendo: “Que nem homem nem animal, nem gado nem rebanho, provem coisa alguma; não se alimentem, nem bebam água;
8
mas que se cubram de pano de saco, tanto homem quanto animal, e clamem fortemente a Deus. Sim, que cada um se desvie do seu mau caminho e da violência que há em suas mãos.
9
Quem sabe se Deus não voltará atrás e se arrependerá, e se desviará da sua ira ardente, para que não pereçamos?”
10
Deus viu as obras deles, que se desviaram do seu mau caminho. Deus se arrependeu do mal que disse que faria a eles, e não o fez.
