Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, for their heads, for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.

Joshua said to all the people, “The LORD, the God of Israel, says, ‘Your fathers lived of old time beyond the River, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nahor. They served other gods.
- 3
I took your father Abraham from beyond the River, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his offspring, and gave him Isaac.
- 4
I gave to Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave to Esau Mount Seir, to possess it. Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.
- 5
“‘I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did among them: and afterward I brought you out.
- 6
I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and you came to the sea. The Egyptians pursued your fathers with chariots and with horsemen to the Red Sea.
- 7
When they cried out to the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea on them, and covered them; and your eyes saw what I did in Egypt. You lived in the wilderness many days.

“‘I brought you into the land of the Amorites, that lived beyond the Jordan. They fought with you, and I gave them into your hand. You possessed their land, and I destroyed them from before you.

Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and fought against Israel. He sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you,
- 10
but I would not listen to Balaam; therefore he blessed you still. So I delivered you out of his hand.

“‘You went over the Jordan, and came to Jericho. The men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; and I delivered them into your hand.

I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; not with your sword, nor with your bow.
- 13
I gave you a land on which you had not labored, and cities which you didn’t build, and you live in them. You eat of vineyards and olive groves which you didn’t plant.’

“Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth. Put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River, in Egypt; and serve the LORD.
- 15
If it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose today whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

The people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods;

for it is the LORD our God who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and who did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way in which we went, and among all the peoples through the middle of whom we passed.

The LORD drove out from before us all the peoples, even the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the LORD; for he is our God.”

Joshua said to the people, “You can’t serve the LORD, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God. He will not forgive your disobedience nor your sins.
- 20
If you forsake the LORD, and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you evil, and consume you, after he has done you good.”
- 21
The people said to Joshua, “No, but we will serve the LORD.”
- 22
Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the LORD yourselves, to serve him.” They said, “We are witnesses.”

“Now therefore put away the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart to the LORD, the God of Israel.”
- 24
The people said to Joshua, “We will serve the LORD our God, and we will listen to his voice.”
- 25
So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made for them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.
- 26
Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a great stone, and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.
- 27
Joshua said to all the people, “Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us, for it has heard all the LORD’s words which he spoke to us. It shall be therefore a witness against you, lest you deny your God.”

So Joshua sent the people away, each to his own inheritance.
- 29
After these things, Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being one hundred ten years old.

They buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathserah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash.

Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, and had known all the work of the LORD, that he had worked for Israel.

They buried the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, in Shechem, in the parcel of ground which Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of silver. They became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.

Eleazar the son of Aaron died. They buried him in the hill of Phinehas his son, which was given him in the hill country of Ephraim.

Josué reuniu todas as tribos de Israel em Siquém, e chamou os anciãos de Israel, seus chefes, seus juízes e seus oficiais; e eles se apresentaram diante de Deus.

Josué disse a todo o povo: “Assim diz o SENHOR, o Deus de Israel: 'Antigamente os seus antepassados viveram além do Rio, a saber, Terá, pai de Abraão e pai de Naor. Eles serviram a outros deuses.

Eu tirei o pai de vocês, Abraão, de além do Rio, e o conduzi por toda a terra de Canaã, e multipliquei a sua descendência, e lhe dei Isaque.

A Isaque eu dei Jacó e Esaú: e a Esaú dei o monte Seir, para que o possuísse. Mas Jacó e seus filhos desceram para o Egito.

“'Eu enviei Moisés e Arão, e castiguei o Egito com pragas, de acordo com o que fiz no meio deles: e depois tirei vocês de lá.
- 6
Eu tirei os seus antepassados do Egito: e vocês chegaram ao mar. Os egípcios perseguiram os seus antepassados com carros e com cavaleiros até o mar Vermelho.

Quando eles clamaram ao SENHOR, ele colocou trevas entre vocês e os egípcios, e trouxe o mar sobre eles, e os cobriu; e os seus olhos viram o que eu fiz no Egito. Vocês viveram no deserto por muitos dias.

“'Eu trouxe vocês para a terra dos amorreus, que viviam além do Jordão. Eles lutaram contra vocês, e eu os entreguei em suas mãos. Vocês tomaram posse da terra deles, e eu os destruí de diante de vocês.
- 9
Então Balaque, filho de Zipor, rei de Moabe, levantou-se e lutou contra Israel. Ele mandou chamar Balaão, filho de Beor, para amaldiçoar vocês,
- 10
mas eu não quis ouvir a Balaão; por isso ele os abençoou. Assim, eu os livrei das mãos dele.

“'Vocês atravessaram o Jordão e chegaram a Jericó. Os homens de Jericó lutaram contra vocês, assim como os amorreus, os ferezeus, os cananeus, os heteus, os girgaseus, os heveus e os jebuseus; e eu os entreguei em suas mãos.
- 12
Eu enviei vespões adiante de vocês, que os expulsaram de diante de vocês, a saber, os dois reis dos amorreus; não com a sua espada, nem com o seu arco.
- 13
Eu lhes dei uma terra na qual vocês não trabalharam, e cidades que vocês não construíram, e vocês moram nelas. Vocês comem de vinhas e olivais que não plantaram.'

“Agora, portanto, temam ao SENHOR, e sirvam-no com sinceridade e em verdade. Lancem fora os deuses aos quais os seus antepassados serviram além do Rio e no Egito; e sirvam ao SENHOR.
- 15
Se parece mal a vocês servir ao SENHOR, escolham hoje a quem vão servir; se aos deuses aos quais os seus antepassados serviram além do Rio, ou aos deuses dos amorreus, em cuja terra vocês habitam; mas eu e a minha casa serviremos ao SENHOR.”

O povo respondeu: “Longe de nós abandonarmos o SENHOR para servir a outros deuses;
- 17
pois o SENHOR, nosso Deus, é quem nos tirou, a nós e aos nossos antepassados, da terra do Egito, da casa da escravidão, e quem fez esses grandes sinais diante dos nossos olhos, e nos preservou em todo o caminho por onde andamos, e entre todos os povos pelo meio dos quais passamos.

O SENHOR expulsou de diante de nós todos os povos, inclusive os amorreus que viviam na terra. Portanto, nós também serviremos ao SENHOR; pois ele é o nosso Deus.”

Josué disse ao povo: “Vocês não podem servir ao SENHOR, pois ele é um Deus santo. Ele é um Deus zeloso. Ele não perdoará a desobediência nem os pecados de vocês.
- 20
Se vocês abandonarem o SENHOR e servirem a deuses estrangeiros, então ele se voltará e lhes fará mal, e os consumirá, depois de lhes ter feito o bem.”

O povo disse a Josué: “Não! Nós serviremos ao SENHOR.”
- 22
Josué disse ao povo: “Vocês são testemunhas contra si mesmos de que escolheram o SENHOR para servi-lo.” Eles disseram: “Somos testemunhas.”
- 23
“Agora, portanto, lancem fora os deuses estrangeiros que estão no meio de vocês, e inclinem o seu coração ao SENHOR, o Deus de Israel.”
- 24
O povo disse a Josué: “Serviremos ao SENHOR, nosso Deus, e ouviremos a sua voz.”
- 25
Assim, Josué fez uma aliança com o povo naquele dia, e estabeleceu para eles um estatuto e uma ordenança em Siquém.
- 26
Josué escreveu essas palavras no livro da lei de Deus; e pegou uma grande pedra, e a ergueu ali debaixo do carvalho que estava junto ao santuário do SENHOR.

Josué disse a todo o povo: “Eis que esta pedra será uma testemunha contra nós, pois ela ouviu todas as palavras do SENHOR que ele nos falou. Portanto, ela será uma testemunha contra vocês, para que não neguem o seu Deus.”

Então Josué despediu o povo, cada um para a sua própria herança.

Depois dessas coisas, Josué, filho de Num, servo do SENHOR, morreu, com a idade de cento e dez anos.
- 30
Eles o sepultaram no território da sua herança em Timnate-Sera, que fica na região montanhosa de Efraim, ao norte do monte Gaás.
- 31
Israel serviu ao SENHOR todos os dias de Josué, e todos os dias dos anciãos que sobreviveram a Josué, e que conheciam toda a obra do SENHOR, que ele havia feito por Israel.
- 32
Eles sepultaram os ossos de José, que os filhos de Israel trouxeram do Egito, em Siquém, na porção de terra que Jacó comprou dos filhos de Hamor, pai de Siquém, por cem peças de prata. E passou a ser a herança dos filhos de José.
- 33
Eleazar, filho de Arão, morreu. Eles o sepultaram na colina de Fineias, seu filho, que lhe fora dada na região montanhosa de Efraim.
