Luke 15

Tax collectors and sinners draw near to hear Jesus, and the Pharisees and scribes grumble that he welcomes them and eats with them. He answers with three stories of things lost and found: a shepherd leaving ninety-nine for one sheep, a woman sweeping for a single coin, and a father with two sons. Watch how each story ends not in scolding but in a shared celebration, with heaven's joy over one sinner who repents.

Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming close to him to hear him.
2
The Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, “This man welcomes sinners, and eats with them.”

He told them this parable:

“Which of you men, if you had one hundred sheep and lost one of them, wouldn’t leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that was lost, until he found it?
5
When he has found it, he carries it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
6
When he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’
7
I tell you that even so there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents, than over ninety-nine righteous people who need no repentance.
8
“Or what woman, if she had ten drachma coins, if she lost one drachma coin, wouldn’t light a lamp, sweep the house, and seek diligently until she found it?
9
When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the drachma which I had lost!’
10
Even so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner repenting.”

He said, “A certain man had two sons.
12
The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of your property.’ So he divided his livelihood between them.
13
Not many days after, the younger son gathered all of this together and traveled into a far country. There he wasted his property with riotous living.
14
When he had spent all of it, there arose a severe famine in that country, and he began to be in need.
15
He went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed pigs.
16
He wanted to fill his belly with the pods that the pigs ate, but no one gave him any.
17
But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough to spare, and I’m dying with hunger!
18
I will get up and go to my father, and will tell him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight.
19
I am no more worthy to be called your son. Make me as one of your hired servants.”’
20
“He arose and came to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was moved with compassion, and ran, fell on his neck, and kissed him.
21
The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’
22
“But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet.
23
Bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let’s eat and celebrate;
24
for this, my son, was dead and is alive again. He was lost and is found.’ Then they began to celebrate.
25
“Now his elder son was in the field. As he came near to the house, he heard music and dancing.
26
He called one of the servants to him and asked what was going on.
27
He said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and healthy.’
28
But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and begged him.
29
But he answered his father, ‘Behold, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed a commandment of yours, but you never gave me a goat, that I might celebrate with my friends.
30
But when this your son came, who has devoured your living with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him.’
31
“He said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.
32
But it was appropriate to celebrate and be glad, for this, your brother, was dead, and is alive again. He was lost, and is found.’”

Ora, todos os publicanos e pecadores se aproximavam dele para ouvi-lo.

Os fariseus e os escribas murmuravam, dizendo: “Este homem recebe pecadores e come com eles.”

Então ele lhes contou esta parábola:

“Qual de vocês, homens, se tivesse cem ovelhas e perdesse uma delas, não deixaria as noventa e nove no deserto e iria atrás daquela que se perdeu, até encontrá-la?
5
Quando a encontra, ele a coloca sobre os ombros, alegrando-se.
6
Ao chegar em casa, reúne seus amigos e vizinhos, dizendo-lhes: ‘Alegrem-se comigo, pois encontrei a minha ovelha que estava perdida!’
7
Eu lhes digo que, da mesma forma, haverá mais alegria no céu por um pecador que se arrepende, do que por noventa e nove justos que não precisam de arrependimento.
8
“Ou qual é a mulher que, se tivesse dez moedas de dracma , se perdesse uma moeda de dracma, não acenderia uma candeia, varreria a casa e procuraria diligentemente até encontrá-la?
9
Quando a encontra, ela reúne suas amigas e vizinhas, dizendo: ‘Alegrem-se comigo, pois encontrei a dracma que eu havia perdido!’
10
Da mesma forma, eu lhes digo, há alegria na presença dos anjos de Deus por um pecador que se arrepende.”
11
Ele disse: “Certo homem tinha dois filhos.
12
O mais jovem deles disse ao pai: ‘Pai, dá-me a parte dos bens que me cabe.’ Então ele dividiu os seus bens entre eles.
13
Poucos dias depois, o filho mais jovem juntou tudo o que era seu e viajou para um país distante. Lá ele desperdiçou os seus bens vivendo de forma dissoluta.
14
Depois de ter gasto tudo, houve uma grande fome naquele país, e ele começou a passar necessidade.
15
Então ele foi e se juntou a um dos cidadãos daquele país, que o mandou para os seus campos para apascentar porcos.
16
Ele desejava encher o estômago com as vagens que os porcos comiam, mas ninguém lhe dava nada.
17
Mas, quando caiu em si, disse: ‘Quantos empregados de meu pai têm pão com fartura, e eu aqui morrendo de fome!
18
Eu me levantarei, irei para meu pai e lhe direi: “Pai, pequei contra o céu e diante de ti.
19
Já não sou digno de ser chamado teu filho. Trata-me como um dos teus empregados.”’
20
“Ele se levantou e foi para seu pai. Mas, estando ele ainda longe, seu pai o viu e, movido de íntima compaixão, correu, lançou-se ao seu pescoço e o beijou.
21
O filho lhe disse: ‘Pai, pequei contra o céu e diante de ti. Já não sou digno de ser chamado teu filho.’
22
“Mas o pai disse aos seus servos: ‘Tragam a melhor veste e vistam nele. Coloquem um anel em sua mão e sandálias em seus pés.
23
Tragam o bezerro gordo, matem-no, e vamos comer e celebrar;
24
pois este meu filho estava morto e voltou à vida. Ele estava perdido e foi achado.’ Então começaram a celebrar.
25
“Ora, o seu filho mais velho estava no campo. Quando se aproximou da casa, ouviu música e dança.
26
Ele chamou um dos servos e perguntou o que estava acontecendo.
27
Ele lhe disse: ‘Seu irmão chegou, e seu pai matou o bezerro gordo, porque o recebeu de volta são e salvo.’
28
Mas ele ficou irado e não queria entrar. Portanto, seu pai saiu e rogou-lhe.
29
Mas ele respondeu ao seu pai: ‘Eis que te sirvo há tantos anos, e nunca desobedeci a um mandamento teu, mas tu nunca me deste um cabrito, para que eu pudesse celebrar com os meus amigos.
30
Mas quando veio este teu filho, que devorou os teus bens com prostitutas, tu mataste o bezerro gordo para ele.’
31
“Ele lhe disse: ‘Filho, você está sempre comigo, e tudo o que é meu é seu.
32
Mas era apropriado celebrar e alegrar-se, pois este seu irmão estava morto, e voltou à vida. Ele estava perdido, e foi achado.’”

The father and the two sons

The youngest demands his share, wastes it abroad, and ends up envying pigs their pods. Resolving to return as a hired servant, he is met while still far off by a father who runs, embraces him, and calls for the best robe and the fattened calf.

The story doesn't close on the feast but on the elder brother sulking outside, answering the grumbling Pharisees who opened the chapter: "this your brother was dead, and is alive again."
