Luke 20
Teaching daily in the temple, Jesus is met by a series of traps. First the leaders demand his authority and he counters with a question about John's baptism; then the parable of the murderous vineyard tenants; then questions about Caesar's tax and the resurrection — each one defused in turn.

On one of those days, as he was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the Good News, the priests and scribes came to him with the elders.

They asked him, “Tell us: by what authority do you do these things? Or who is giving you this authority?”

He answered them, “I also will ask you one question. Tell me:

the baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men?”
- 5
They reasoned with themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’
- 6
But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”
- 7
They answered that they didn’t know where it was from.
- 8
Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
- 9
He began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and rented it out to some farmers, and went into another country for a long time.
- 10
At the proper season, he sent a servant to the farmers to collect his share of the fruit of the vineyard. But the farmers beat him and sent him away empty.

He sent yet another servant, and they also beat him and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.
- 12
He sent yet a third, and they also wounded him and threw him out.
- 13
The lord of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. It may be that seeing him, they will respect him.’
- 14
“But when the farmers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.’
- 15
Then they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them?
- 16
He will come and destroy these farmers, and will give the vineyard to others.” When they heard that, they said, “May that never be!”

But he looked at them and said, “Then what is this that is written, ‘The stone which the builders rejected was made the chief cornerstone’?
- 18
Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but it will crush whomever it falls on to dust.”

The chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him that very hour, but they feared the people—for they knew he had spoken this parable against them.

They watched him and sent out spies, who pretended to be righteous, that they might trap him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the power and authority of the governor.

They asked him, “Teacher, we know that you say and teach what is right, and aren’t partial to anyone, but truly teach the way of God.
- 22
Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”
- 23
But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them, “Why do you test me?
- 24
Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?” They answered, “Caesar’s.”

He said to them, “Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

They weren’t able to trap him in his words before the people. They marveled at his answer and were silent.

Some of the Sadducees came to him, those who deny that there is a resurrection.
- 28
They asked him, “Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s brother dies having a wife, and he is childless, his brother should take the wife and raise up children for his brother.

There were therefore seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died childless.
- 30
The second took her as wife, and he died childless.
- 31
The third took her, and likewise the seven all left no children, and died.
- 32
Afterward the woman also died.
- 33
Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them will she be? For the seven had her as a wife.”

Jesus said to them, “The children of this age marry and are given in marriage.
- 35
But those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage.
- 36
For they can’t die any more, for they are like the angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection.
- 37
But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed at the bush, when he called the Lord ‘The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’

Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for all are alive to him.”
- 39
Some of the scribes answered, “Teacher, you speak well.”
- 40
They didn’t dare to ask him any more questions.
- 41
He said to them, “Why do they say that the Christ is David’s son?

David himself says in the book of Psalms, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand,
- 43
until I make your enemies the footstool of your feet.”’

“David therefore calls him Lord, so how is he his son?”
- 45
In the hearing of all the people, he said to his disciples,
- 46
“Beware of those scribes who like to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts;
- 47
who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”

Então responderam que não sabiam de onde era.

Jesus lhes disse: “Tampouco eu lhes digo com que autoridade faço estas coisas.”

Ele começou a contar ao povo esta parábola: “Um homem plantou uma vinha, arrendou-a a alguns lavradores, e foi para outro país por muito tempo.

No tempo certo, ele enviou um servo aos lavradores para receber a sua parte do fruto da vinha. Mas os lavradores o espancaram e o mandaram embora de mãos vazias.

Ele enviou ainda outro servo, e eles também o espancaram, o trataram vergonhosamente, e o mandaram embora de mãos vazias.

Ele enviou ainda um terceiro, e eles também o feriram e o expulsaram.

O senhor da vinha disse: 'O que farei? Enviarei meu filho amado. Pode ser que, ao vê-lo, eles o respeitem.'

“Mas, quando os lavradores o viram, arrazoaram entre si, dizendo: 'Este é o herdeiro. Venham, vamos matá-lo, para que a herança seja nossa.'
- 15
Então o lançaram fora da vinha e o mataram. O que, portanto, o senhor da vinha fará a eles?
- 16
Ele virá e destruirá esses lavradores, e dará a vinha a outros.” Quando ouviram isso, disseram: “Que isso nunca aconteça!”

Mas ele olhou para eles e disse: “Então, o que é isto que está escrito: 'A pedra que os construtores rejeitaram tornou-se a pedra angular'?
- 18
Todo aquele que cair sobre essa pedra será despedaçado, mas ela reduzirá a pó aquele sobre quem cair.”

Os principais sacerdotes e os escribas procuraram deitar as mãos nele naquela mesma hora, mas temeram o povo — pois sabiam que ele havia contado esta parábola contra eles.

Eles o observavam e enviaram espiões, que fingiam ser justos, para que pudessem apanhá-lo em alguma palavra, a fim de entregá-lo ao poder e à autoridade do governador.

Eles lhe perguntaram: “Mestre, sabemos que falas e ensinas o que é certo, e não mostras parcialidade para com ninguém, mas ensinas verdadeiramente o caminho de Deus.

É lícito para nós pagarmos impostos a César, ou não?”

Mas ele, percebendo a astúcia deles, disse-lhes: “Por que me põem à prova?
- 24
Mostrem-me um denário. De quem é a imagem e a inscrição que estão nele?” Eles responderam: “De César.”
- 25
Ele lhes disse: “Então deem a César o que é de César, e a Deus o que é de Deus.”
- 26
Eles não conseguiram apanhá-lo em suas palavras diante do povo. Maravilhados com a sua resposta, ficaram em silêncio.

Alguns dos saduceus, aqueles que negam que haja ressurreição, aproximaram-se dele.

Eles lhe perguntaram: “Mestre, Moisés nos escreveu que, se o irmão de um homem morrer tendo esposa, e não tiver filhos, seu irmão deve casar-se com a esposa e suscitar descendência para seu irmão.

Havia, portanto, sete irmãos. O primeiro casou-se e morreu sem filhos.
- 30
O segundo casou-se com ela, e morreu sem filhos.

O terceiro casou-se com ela, e da mesma forma todos os sete não deixaram filhos, e morreram.

Depois, a mulher também morreu.
- 33
Portanto, na ressurreição, de qual deles ela será esposa? Pois os sete a tiveram como esposa.”

Jesus lhes disse: “Os filhos desta era casam-se e são dados em casamento.
- 35
Mas aqueles que são considerados dignos de alcançar aquela era e a ressurreição dentre os mortos não se casam nem são dados em casamento.
- 36
Pois eles não podem mais morrer, porque são como os anjos e são filhos de Deus, sendo filhos da ressurreição.
- 37
Mas que os mortos ressuscitam, até Moisés mostrou no episódio da sarça, quando chamou ao Senhor 'O Deus de Abraão, o Deus de Isaque e o Deus de Jacó.'

Ora, ele não é Deus de mortos, mas de vivos, pois para ele todos vivem.”

Alguns dos escribas responderam: “Mestre, falaste bem.”

Eles não ousaram fazer-lhe mais nenhuma pergunta.

Ele lhes disse: “Por que dizem que o Cristo é filho de Davi?

O próprio Davi diz no livro de Salmos: 'O Senhor disse ao meu Senhor: “Assenta-te à minha direita,

até que eu ponha os teus inimigos por estrado dos teus pés.”'

“Portanto, Davi o chama de Senhor; então, como ele é seu filho?”

Ouvindo-o todo o povo, ele disse aos seus discípulos:
- 46
“Cuidado com os escribas, que gostam de andar com vestes longas, e amam as saudações nas praças, os melhores assentos nas sinagogas e os lugares de honra nos banquetes;
- 47
que devoram as casas das viúvas e, por pretexto, fazem longas orações. Estes receberão maior condenação.”
Three test questions, three reversals
The chapter is structured as escalating confrontation. The vineyard parable (v.9-18) tells the leaders' own story to their faces, with the rejected stone becoming the cornerstone. The Caesar coin trap ends in 'give to Caesar... and to God' (v.25); the Sadducees' resurrection riddle ends with God being 'not the God of the dead, but of the living.' Jesus then turns questioner himself, asking how the Christ can be David's Lord and son at once.
