Mark 4

Jesus teaches from a boat, and the chapter turns to parables: the sower and four soils, the lamp, the seed growing secretly, the mustard seed. Then evening comes and the teaching is tested when a windstorm hits the lake.

Again he began to teach by the seaside. A great multitude was gathered to him, so that he entered into a boat in the sea and sat down. All the multitude were on the land by the sea.

He taught them many things in parables, and told them in his teaching,

“Listen! Behold, the farmer went out to sow.
4
As he sowed, some seed fell by the road, and the birds came and devoured it.
5
Others fell on the rocky ground, where it had little soil, and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of soil.
6
When the sun had risen, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.
7
Others fell among the thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.
8
Others fell into the good ground and yielded fruit, growing up and increasing. Some produced thirty times, some sixty times, and some one hundred times as much.”
9
He said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.”
10
When he was alone, those who were around him with the twelve asked him about the parables.
11
He said to them, “To you is given the mystery of God’s Kingdom, but to those who are outside, all things are done in parables,
12
that ‘seeing they may see and not perceive, and hearing they may hear and not understand, lest perhaps they should turn again, and their sins should be forgiven them.’”
13
He said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How will you understand all of the parables?
14
The farmer sows the word.
15
The ones by the road are the ones where the word is sown; and when they have heard, immediately Satan comes and takes away the word which has been sown in them.
16
These in the same way are those who are sown on the rocky places, who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with joy.
17
They have no root in themselves, but are short-lived. When oppression or persecution arises because of the word, immediately they stumble.
18
Others are those who are sown among the thorns. These are those who have heard the word,
19
and the cares of this age, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
20
Those which were sown on the good ground are those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit, some thirty times, some sixty times, and some one hundred times.”
21
He said to them, “Is a lamp brought to be put under a basket or under a bed? Isn’t it put on a stand?
22
For there is nothing hidden except that it should be made known, neither was anything made secret but that it should come to light.
23
If any man has ears to hear, let him hear.”
24
He said to them, “Take heed what you hear. With whatever measure you measure, it will be measured to you; and more will be given to you who hear.
25
For whoever has, to him more will be given; and he who doesn’t have, even that which he has will be taken away from him.”
26
He said, “God’s Kingdom is as if a man should cast seed on the earth,
27
and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should spring up and grow, though he doesn’t know how.
28
For the earth bears fruit by itself: first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.
29
But when the fruit is ripe, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”
30
He said, “How will we liken God’s Kingdom? Or with what parable will we illustrate it?
31
It’s like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, though it is less than all the seeds that are on the earth,
32
yet when it is sown, grows up and becomes greater than all the herbs, and puts out great branches, so that the birds of the sky can lodge under its shadow.”
33
With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it.
34
Without a parable he didn’t speak to them; but privately to his own disciples he explained everything.
35
On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let’s go over to the other side.”
36
Leaving the multitude, they took him with them, even as he was, in the boat. Other small boats were also with him.
37
A big wind storm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so much that the boat was already filled.
38
He himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and asked him, “Teacher, don’t you care that we are dying?”
39
He awoke and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind ceased and there was a great calm.
40
He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? How is it that you have no faith?”
41
They were greatly afraid and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Novamente ele começou a ensinar à beira-mar. Uma grande multidão se reuniu ao seu redor, de modo que ele entrou num barco no mar e assentou-se. Toda a multidão estava em terra, à beira-mar.

Ele lhes ensinava muitas coisas por parábolas, e lhes dizia em seu ensino:

“Ouçam! Eis que o semeador saiu a semear.
4
Enquanto semeava, alguma semente caiu à beira do caminho, e as aves vieram e a devoraram.
5
Outra caiu em solo rochoso, onde não havia muita terra, e logo brotou, porque a terra não era profunda.
6
Mas quando o sol saiu, foi queimada; e, por não ter raiz, secou.
7
Outra caiu entre os espinhos, e os espinhos cresceram e a sufocaram, e ela não deu fruto.
8
Outra caiu em boa terra e deu fruto, brotando e crescendo. Uma produziu trinta, outra sessenta, e outra cem vezes mais.”
9
Ele disse: “Quem tem ouvidos para ouvir, ouça.”
10
Quando ele ficou sozinho, os que estavam ao seu redor com os doze lhe perguntaram sobre as parábolas.
11
Ele lhes disse: “A vocês é dado o mistério do Reino de Deus, mas aos que estão de fora, todas as coisas são ditas por parábolas,
12
para que 'vendo, vejam e não percebam, e ouvindo, ouçam e não entendam, para que não se convertam e os seus pecados lhes sejam perdoados'.”
13
Então ele lhes disse: “Vocês não entendem esta parábola? Como então entenderão todas as parábolas?
14
O semeador semeia a palavra.
15
Os que estão à beira do caminho são aqueles onde a palavra é semeada; e quando eles ouvem, logo vem Satanás e tira a palavra que neles foi semeada.
16
Da mesma forma, estes são os que foram semeados em lugares rochosos: os quais, quando ouvem a palavra, logo a recebem com alegria.
17
Mas eles não têm raiz em si mesmos, sendo de pouca duração. Quando surge opressão ou perseguição por causa da palavra, logo tropeçam.
18
Outros são os que foram semeados entre os espinhos. Estes são os que ouvem a palavra,
19
mas as preocupações desta era, a ilusão das riquezas e os desejos por outras coisas entram e sufocam a palavra, e ela se torna infrutífera.
20
Aqueles que foram semeados em boa terra são os que ouvem a palavra, a aceitam e dão fruto, produzindo a trinta, a sessenta e a cem por um.”
21
Ele lhes disse: “Por acaso uma candeia é trazida para ser colocada debaixo de um cesto ou debaixo de uma cama? Não é colocada em um velador?
22
Pois não há nada oculto, senão para ser manifestado; nem nada escondido, senão para vir à luz.
23
Se alguém tem ouvidos para ouvir, ouça.”
24
E disse-lhes: “Prestem atenção ao que vocês ouvem. Com a medida com que medirem, será medido a vocês; e ainda mais será dado a vocês que ouvem.
25
Pois a quem tem, mais lhe será dado; e ao que não tem, até o que tem lhe será tirado.”
26
Ele disse: “O Reino de Deus é como se um homem lançasse semente na terra,
27
e dormisse e se levantasse, de noite e de dia, e a semente brotasse e crescesse, sem que ele saiba como.
28
Pois a terra por si mesma produz fruto: primeiro a erva, depois a espiga, e por fim o grão cheio na espiga.
29
Mas quando o fruto amadurece, logo ele mete a foice, porque a colheita chegou.”
30
Ele disse: “A que compararemos o Reino de Deus? Ou com que parábola o ilustraremos?
31
É como um grão de mostarda, que, quando é semeado na terra, embora seja a menor de todas as sementes que há na terra,
32
contudo, quando é semeado, cresce e se torna maior do que todas as hortaliças, e deita grandes ramos, de modo que as aves do céu podem se aninhar à sua sombra.”
33
Com muitas parábolas semelhantes ele lhes anunciava a palavra, conforme podiam ouvir.
34
Sem parábolas não lhes falava; mas em particular, aos seus próprios discípulos, ele explicava tudo.
35
Naquele dia, ao cair da tarde, ele lhes disse: “Passemos para o outro lado.”
36
Deixando a multidão, eles o levaram consigo, assim como estava, no barco. Outros pequenos barcos também estavam com ele.
37
Levantou-se uma grande tempestade de vento, e as ondas batiam no barco, de modo que o barco já estava se enchendo de água.
38
Ele mesmo estava na popa, dormindo sobre um travesseiro; e eles o acordaram e lhe perguntaram: “Mestre, não te importas que pereçamos?”
39
Ele despertou, repreendeu o vento e disse ao mar: “Paz! Aquiete-se!” O vento cessou e houve grande calmaria.
40
Ele lhes disse: “Por que vocês estão com tanto medo? Como é que vocês não têm fé?”
41
Eles ficaram com muito medo e diziam uns aos outros: “Quem é este, que até o vento e o mar lhe obedecem?”

From parable to storm

Verses 1-34 are almost all about how the word is received: some seed is snatched, scorched, or choked, some bears thirty, sixty, a hundredfold. Privately Jesus explains everything to the twelve.

Then v.35-41 puts them in the boat. Jesus, asleep on the cushion, wakes, rebukes the wind, and says "Peace! Be still!" Their terror becomes a question: who is this that even wind and sea obey him?
