Matthew 10

The harvest prayer of chapter 9 is answered: Jesus names the Twelve (vv. 2-4) and sends them out with authority over unclean spirits and disease. Their mission is restricted — not to Gentiles or Samaritans, but to "the lost sheep of the house of Israel" (v. 6). The instructions soon stretch past this trip into coming persecution: floggings, betrayals within families, hatred "for my name's sake." Three times the refrain "don't be afraid" answers the sparrows, the numbered hairs, and the One who confesses or denies before the Father.

He called to himself his twelve disciples, and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every sickness.

Now the names of the twelve apostles are these. The first, Simon, who is called Peter; Andrew, his brother; James the son of Zebedee; John, his brother;

Philip; Bartholomew; Thomas; Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus; Lebbaeus, who was also called Thaddaeus;

Simon the Zealot; and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

Jesus sent these twelve out and commanded them, saying, “Don’t go among the Gentiles, and don’t enter into any city of the Samaritans.

Rather, go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
7
As you go, preach, saying, ‘The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!’
8
Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, and cast out demons. Freely you received, so freely give.
9
Don’t take any gold, silver, or brass in your money belts.
10
Take no bag for your journey, neither two coats, nor sandals, nor staff: for the laborer is worthy of his food.
11
Into whatever city or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy, and stay there until you go on.
12
As you enter into the household, greet it.
13
If the household is worthy, let your peace come on it, but if it isn’t worthy, let your peace return to you.
14
Whoever doesn’t receive you or hear your words, as you go out of that house or that city, shake the dust off your feet.
15
Most certainly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.
16
“Behold, I send you out as sheep among wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.
17
But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils, and in their synagogues they will scourge you.
18
Yes, and you will be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the nations.
19
But when they deliver you up, don’t be anxious how or what you will say, for it will be given you in that hour what you will say.
20
For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.
21
“Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child. Children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death.
22
You will be hated by all men for my name’s sake, but he who endures to the end will be saved.
23
But when they persecute you in this city, flee into the next, for most certainly I tell you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel until the Son of Man has come.
24
“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his lord.
25
It is enough for the disciple that he be like his teacher, and the servant like his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more those of his household!
26
Therefore don’t be afraid of them, for there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.
27
What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear whispered in the ear, proclaim on the housetops.
28
Don’t be afraid of those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul. Rather, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.
29
“Aren’t two sparrows sold for an assarion coin? Not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will.
30
But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
31
Therefore don’t be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows.
32
Everyone therefore who confesses me before men, I will also confess him before my Father who is in heaven.
33
But whoever denies me before men, I will also deny him before my Father who is in heaven.
34
“Don’t think that I came to send peace on the earth. I didn’t come to send peace, but a sword.
35
For I came to set a man at odds against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
36
A man’s foes will be those of his own household.
37
He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me isn’t worthy of me.
38
He who doesn’t take his cross and follow after me isn’t worthy of me.
39
He who seeks his life will lose it; and he who loses his life for my sake will find it.
40
“He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives him who sent me.
41
He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward. He who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward.
42
Whoever gives one of these little ones just a cup of cold water to drink in the name of a disciple, most certainly I tell you, he will in no way lose his reward.”

Ora, os nomes dos doze apóstolos são estes: primeiro, Simão, chamado Pedro; André, seu irmão; Tiago, filho de Zebedeu; João, seu irmão;

Vão, antes, às ovelhas perdidas da casa de Israel.

Curem os enfermos, purifiquem os leprosos, e expulsem os demônios. Vocês receberam de graça, portanto, deem de graça.

Não levem ouro, nem prata, nem cobre em seus cintos.
10
Não levem sacola para o caminho, nem duas túnicas, nem sandálias, nem bordão; pois o trabalhador é digno do seu alimento.
11
Em qualquer cidade ou povoado em que entrarem, procurem saber quem ali é digno, e fiquem lá até partirem.
12
Ao entrarem na casa, saúdem-na.
13
Se a casa for digna, que a paz de vocês venha sobre ela; mas, se não for digna, que a paz retorne a vocês.
14
Se alguém não os receber nem ouvir as suas palavras, ao saírem daquela casa ou daquela cidade, sacudam o pó dos seus pés.
15
Em verdade, em verdade lhes digo: no dia do juízo haverá mais tolerância para a terra de Sodoma e Gomorra do que para aquela cidade.
16
“Eis que eu os envio como ovelhas para o meio de lobos. Portanto, sejam prudentes como as serpentes e simples como as pombas.
17
Mas tenham cuidado com os homens, pois eles os entregarão aos tribunais e os açoitarão em suas sinagogas.
18
Sim, e vocês serão levados à presença de governadores e reis por minha causa, para servir de testemunho a eles e às nações.
19
Mas, quando os entregarem, não fiquem ansiosos sobre como ou o que irão falar, pois naquela mesma hora lhes será dado o que dizer.
20
Pois não são vocês que falam, mas o Espírito do Pai de vocês é quem fala em vocês.
21
“O irmão entregará o irmão à morte, e o pai ao seu filho. Os filhos se levantarão contra os pais e os farão morrer.
22
Vocês serão odiados por todos por causa do meu nome, mas aquele que perseverar até o fim será salvo.
23
Mas, quando os perseguirem nesta cidade, fujam para a próxima; pois em verdade, em verdade lhes digo: vocês não acabarão de percorrer as cidades de Israel antes que venha o Filho do Homem.

“O discípulo não está acima do seu mestre, nem o servo acima do seu senhor.
25
Basta ao discípulo ser como o seu mestre, e ao servo como o seu senhor. Se chamaram de Belzebu ao dono da casa, quanto mais aos membros da sua família!
26
Portanto, não tenham medo deles, pois não há nada encoberto que não venha a ser revelado, nem oculto que não venha a ser conhecido.
27
O que eu lhes digo na escuridão, falem na luz; e o que escutam sussurrado ao ouvido, proclamem dos telhados.
28
Não tenham medo dos que matam o corpo, mas não podem matar a alma. Antes, temam aquele que pode destruir tanto a alma quanto o corpo na Geena.
29
“Não se vendem dois pardais por um asse? E nenhum deles cai no chão sem a vontade do Pai de vocês.
30
Mas até os cabelos da cabeça de vocês estão todos contados.
31
Portanto, não tenham medo. Vocês valem mais do que muitos pardais.
32
Portanto, todo aquele que me confessar diante dos homens, eu também o confessarei diante do meu Pai que está nos céus.
33
Mas qualquer que me negar diante dos homens, eu também o negarei diante do meu Pai que está nos céus.
34
“Não pensem que vim trazer paz à terra. Não vim trazer paz, mas espada.
35
Pois vim para colocar o homem contra o seu pai, a filha contra a sua mãe, e a nora contra a sua sogra.
36
Os inimigos do homem serão os da sua própria família.
37
Quem ama seu pai ou sua mãe mais do que a mim não é digno de mim; e quem ama seu filho ou sua filha mais do que a mim não é digno de mim.
38
E quem não toma a sua cruz e vem após mim não é digno de mim.
39
Quem busca a sua vida a perderá; e quem perde a sua vida por minha causa a encontrará.
40
“Quem recebe vocês, recebe a mim; e quem me recebe, recebe aquele que me enviou.
41
Quem recebe um profeta em nome de um profeta, receberá a recompensa de profeta. E quem recebe um justo em nome de um justo, receberá a recompensa de justo.
42
E quem der apenas um copo de água fria a um destes pequeninos para beber, em nome de um discípulo, em verdade, em verdade lhes digo que de modo algum perderá a sua recompensa.”

A sending that promises a sword

The mission charge turns sharply: "Don't think that I came to send peace on the earth... but a sword" (v. 34). The division runs through households — father against son, daughter against mother — and loving family more than Jesus makes one unworthy of him.

The paradox that follows reframes the cost: "He who seeks his life will lose it; and he who loses his life for my sake will find it" (v. 39). The closing promise of reward, down to a cup of cold water, lands on those who receive the sent ones.
