Matthew 16

At Caesarea Philippi the question that has hung over the whole book gets answered out loud: Peter names Jesus "the Christ, the Son of the living God," and Jesus promises to build his assembly on that confession. Within the same breath, though, Jesus begins predicting Jerusalem, suffering, and death — and the man just blessed is rebuked as "Satan." Watch how fast praise turns to misunderstanding. The chapter pivots from recognizing who Jesus is to refusing what he came to do, then redefines discipleship as taking up a cross.

The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing him, asked him to show them a sign from heaven.

But he answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’

In the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Hypocrites! You know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but you can’t discern the signs of the times!

An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and there will be no sign given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” He left them and departed.

The disciples came to the other side and had forgotten to take bread.
6
Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
7
They reasoned among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.”
8
Jesus, perceiving it, said, “Why do you reason among yourselves, you of little faith, because you have brought no bread?
9
Don’t you yet perceive or remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up,
10
or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up?
11
How is it that you don’t perceive that I didn’t speak to you concerning bread? But beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

Then they understood that he didn’t tell them to beware of the yeast of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Now when Jesus came into the parts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”

They said, “Some say John the Baptizer, some, Elijah, and others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
18
I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my assembly, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.
19
I will give to you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will have been bound in heaven; and whatever you release on earth will have been released in heaven.”
20
Then he commanded the disciples that they should tell no one that he was Jesus the Christ.
21
From that time, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.
22
Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This will never be done to you.”
23
But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me, for you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of men.”
24
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.
25
For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, and whoever will lose his life for my sake will find it.
26
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what will a man give in exchange for his life?
27
For the Son of Man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will give to everyone according to his deeds.
28
Most certainly I tell you, there are some standing here who will in no way taste of death until they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom.”

Os fariseus e saduceus aproximaram-se e, para testá-lo, pediram-lhe que lhes mostrasse um sinal do céu.

Mas ele lhes respondeu: “Quando chega a tarde, vocês dizem: ‘Haverá bom tempo, pois o céu está vermelho’.

E de manhã: ‘Hoje haverá tempestade, pois o céu está vermelho e ameaçador’. Hipócritas! Vocês sabem discernir o aspecto do céu, mas não conseguem discernir os sinais dos tempos!
4
Uma geração má e adúltera pede um sinal, e nenhum sinal lhe será dado, exceto o sinal do profeta Jonas.” Então ele os deixou e foi embora.

Os discípulos chegaram ao outro lado e haviam se esquecido de levar pão.
6
Jesus lhes disse: “Fiquem atentos e tenham cuidado com o fermento dos fariseus e saduceus.”
7
Eles discutiam entre si, dizendo: “É porque não trouxemos pão.”
8
Jesus, percebendo isso, disse: “Homens de pequena fé, por que vocês discutem entre si por não terem trazido pão?
9
Vocês ainda não compreendem nem se lembram dos cinco pães para os cinco mil, e de quantos cestos recolheram?
10
Nem dos sete pães para os quatro mil, e de quantos cestos recolheram?
11
Como é que vocês não compreendem que eu não estava lhes falando sobre pão? Mas tenham cuidado com o fermento dos fariseus e saduceus.”
12
Então eles entenderam que ele não lhes dissera para ter cuidado com o fermento do pão, mas sim com o ensino dos fariseus e saduceus.

Quando Jesus chegou à região de Cesareia de Filipe, perguntou aos seus discípulos, dizendo: “Quem os homens dizem que eu, o Filho do Homem, sou?”

Eles responderam: “Alguns dizem João Batista; outros, Elias; e ainda outros, Jeremias ou um dos profetas.”

Ele lhes perguntou: “E vocês, quem dizem que eu sou?”

Simão Pedro respondeu: “Tu és o Cristo, o Filho do Deus vivo.”

Jesus lhe respondeu: “Bem-aventurado é você, Simão, filho de Jonas, pois não foi carne e sangue que lhe revelou isso, mas meu Pai, que está nos céus.
18
Eu também lhe digo que você é Pedro, e sobre esta pedra edificarei a minha igreja, e as portas do Hades não prevalecerão contra ela.
19
Eu lhe darei as chaves do Reino dos Céus, e tudo o que você ligar na terra terá sido ligado nos céus; e tudo o que você desligar na terra terá sido desligado nos céus.”
20
Então ele ordenou aos discípulos que não dissessem a ninguém que ele era Jesus, o Cristo.

A partir daquele momento, Jesus começou a mostrar aos seus discípulos que era necessário que ele fosse a Jerusalém e sofresse muitas coisas nas mãos dos anciãos, dos principais sacerdotes e dos escribas, e fosse morto, e no terceiro dia fosse ressuscitado.
22
Pedro, chamando-o à parte, começou a repreendê-lo, dizendo: “Longe de ti, Senhor! Isso nunca te acontecerá.”
23
Mas ele se voltou e disse a Pedro: “Para trás de mim, Satanás! Você é uma pedra de tropeço para mim, pois não está pensando nas coisas de Deus, mas nas coisas dos homens.”
24
Então Jesus disse aos seus discípulos: “Se alguém deseja vir após mim, negue-se a si mesmo, tome a sua cruz e siga-me.
25
Pois quem quiser salvar a sua vida, a perderá; mas quem perder a sua vida por minha causa, a encontrará.
26
Pois que adiantará a um homem ganhar o mundo inteiro e perder a sua vida? Ou o que um homem dará em troca de sua vida?
27
Pois o Filho do Homem virá na glória de seu Pai, com os seus anjos, e então retribuirá a cada um de acordo com as suas obras.
28
Em verdade, em verdade lhes digo: alguns dos que estão aqui não provarão a morte de forma alguma, até que vejam o Filho do Homem vindo em seu Reino.”

Bread, yeast, and dull eyes

Before the confession comes a small comedy of failed perception: the Pharisees and Sadducees demand a sign, and the disciples worry they forgot to pack bread. Jesus links the two — both groups fail to read what is in front of them, just as they read weather but miss "the signs of the times."

The warning about "the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees" frames the whole chapter as a test of sight: who can see past loaves and sky to recognize the Son of Man.
