Matthew 2

Foreign astrologers arrive in Jerusalem tracking a star, and their question — "Where is he who is born King of the Jews?" (v. 2) — terrifies Herod and the whole city. The chapter then races through four moves: the magi's visit, the flight to Egypt, the slaughter at Bethlehem, and the return to Nazareth. Notice the repeated dream-warnings steering Joseph, and the four prophecy citations (Micah, Hosea, Jeremiah) Matthew anchors to each location.

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying,

“Where is he who is born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him.”

When King Herod heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
4
Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them where the Christ would be born.

They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is written through the prophet,

‘You Bethlehem, land of Judah, are in no way least among the princes of Judah; for out of you shall come a governor who shall shepherd my people, Israel.’”

Then Herod secretly called the wise men, and learned from them exactly what time the star appeared.
8
He sent them to Bethlehem, and said, “Go and search diligently for the young child. When you have found him, bring me word, so that I also may come and worship him.”
9
They, having heard the king, went their way; and behold, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them until it came and stood over where the young child was.
10
When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.
11
They came into the house and saw the young child with Mary, his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Opening their treasures, they offered to him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went back to their own country another way.
13
Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.”

He arose and took the young child and his mother by night and departed into Egypt,
15
and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked by the wise men, was exceedingly angry, and sent out and killed all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all the surrounding countryside, from two years old and under, according to the exact time which he had learned from the wise men.

Then that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying,

“A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children; she wouldn’t be comforted, because they are no more.”

But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying,

“Arise and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel, for those who sought the young child’s life are dead.”
21
He arose and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.
22
But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in the place of his father, Herod, he was afraid to go there. Being warned in a dream, he withdrew into the region of Galilee,
23
and came and lived in a city called Nazareth; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets that he will be called a Nazarene.

Tendo Jesus nascido em Belém da Judeia, nos dias do rei Herodes, eis que magos do oriente chegaram a Jerusalém, dizendo:

“Onde está aquele que nasceu Rei dos judeus? Pois vimos a sua estrela no oriente e viemos adorá-lo.”

Quando o rei Herodes ouviu isso, ficou perturbado, e toda Jerusalém com ele.

Reunindo todos os principais sacerdotes e escribas do povo, perguntou-lhes onde o Cristo haveria de nascer.

Eles lhe disseram: “Em Belém da Judeia, pois assim está escrito por meio do profeta:

‘E você, Belém, terra de Judá, de modo nenhum é a menor entre os príncipes de Judá; pois de você sairá um governador que pastoreará o meu povo, Israel.’”

Então Herodes chamou os magos secretamente e informou-se com eles sobre o tempo exato em que a estrela havia aparecido.

Ele os enviou a Belém e disse: “Vão e procurem diligentemente pelo menino. Quando o encontrarem, tragam-me notícias, para que eu também possa ir e adorá-lo.”

Depois de ouvirem o rei, eles seguiram o seu caminho; e eis que a estrela que tinham visto no oriente ia adiante deles, até que chegou e parou sobre o lugar onde o menino estava.

Ao verem a estrela, alegraram-se com grandíssima alegria.

Entrando na casa, viram o menino com Maria, sua mãe, e, prostrando-se, o adoraram. Abrindo os seus tesouros, ofereceram-lhe presentes: ouro, incenso e mirra.

Sendo avisados em um sonho para não voltarem a Herodes, regressaram para a sua terra por outro caminho.

Depois que eles partiram, eis que um anjo do Senhor apareceu a José em um sonho, dizendo: “Levante-se, tome o menino e sua mãe, e fuja para o Egito. Fique lá até que eu lhe diga, pois Herodes procurará o menino para matá-lo.”

Ele se levantou, tomou o menino e sua mãe, de noite, e partiu para o Egito,
15
e lá ficou até a morte de Herodes, para que se cumprisse o que foi dito pelo Senhor por meio do profeta, que disse: “Do Egito chamei o meu filho.”

Então Herodes, quando viu que havia sido enganado pelos magos, irou-se grandemente e mandou matar todos os meninos que havia em Belém e em todos os seus arredores, de dois anos para baixo, de acordo com o tempo exato sobre o qual havia se informado com os magos.

Então se cumpriu o que foi dito pelo profeta Jeremias, dizendo:

“Uma voz se ouviu em Ramá, lamentação, choro e grande pranto, Raquel chorando por seus filhos; e ela não quis ser consolada, porque eles já não existem.”

Mas, tendo Herodes morrido, eis que um anjo do Senhor apareceu em um sonho a José, no Egito, dizendo:

“Levante-se, tome o menino e sua mãe, e vá para a terra de Israel, pois aqueles que procuravam tirar a vida do menino estão mortos.”
21
Ele se levantou, tomou o menino e sua mãe, e foi para a terra de Israel.
22
Mas, quando ouviu que Arquelau reinava na Judeia em lugar de seu pai, Herodes, teve medo de ir para lá. Sendo avisado em um sonho, retirou-se para a região da Galileia,
23
e foi morar em uma cidade chamada Nazaré; para que se cumprisse o que foi dito por meio dos profetas: que ele será chamado Nazareno.

A geography stitched from prophecy

Matthew turns a refugee itinerary into fulfilled scripture. Bethlehem answers Micah (v. 6); leaving Egypt echoes Hosea's "Out of Egypt I called my son" (v. 15); the Bethlehem mothers' grief is Rachel weeping in Ramah (v. 18). Even the obscure settling in Nazareth is tied to prophetic word (v. 23). The magi's gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh (v. 11) contrast sharply with the sword Herod soon unsheathes.
