Nahum 2
The siege arrives in real time. Sentries are told to keep the fortress and watch the road as the "one who dashes in pieces" advances. Then the camera turns to the attackers: red shields, scarlet soldiers, chariots flashing like torches and racing like lightning through the streets. The decisive line is small and physical: "The gates of the rivers are opened, and the palace is dissolved" (v.6). Nineveh's own waters become the breach. Watch the panic spread from there to the looting and the melting hearts.

He who dashes in pieces has come up against you. Keep the fortress! Watch the way! Strengthen your waist! Fortify your power mightily!

For the LORD restores the excellency of Jacob as the excellency of Israel, for the destroyers have destroyed them and ruined their vine branches.

The shield of his mighty men is made red. The valiant men are in scarlet. The chariots flash with steel in the day of his preparation, and the pine spears are brandished.

The chariots rage in the streets. They rush back and forth in the wide ways. Their appearance is like torches. They run like the lightnings.

He summons his picked troops. They stumble on their way. They dash to its wall, and the protective shield is put in place.

The gates of the rivers are opened, and the palace is dissolved.

It is decreed: she is uncovered, she is carried away; and her servants moan as with the voice of doves, beating on their breasts.

But Nineveh has been from of old like a pool of water, yet they flee away. “Stop! Stop!” they cry, but no one looks back.

Take the plunder of silver. Take the plunder of gold, for there is no end of treasure, an abundance of every precious thing.

She is empty, void, and waste. The heart melts, the knees knock together, their bodies and faces have grown pale.

Where is the den of the lions, and the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion and the lioness walked with the lion’s cubs, and no one made them afraid?

The lion tore in pieces enough for his cubs, and strangled prey for his lionesses, and filled his caves with the kill and his dens with prey.

“Behold, I am against you,” says the LORD of Armies, “and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword will devour your young lions; and I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers will no longer be heard.”

Y fué Nínive de tiempo antiguo como estanque de aguas; mas ellos huyen: Parad, parad; y ninguno mira.

Saquead plata, saquead oro: no hay fin de las riquezas y suntuosidad de todo ajuar de codicia.

Vacía, y agotada, y despedazada está, y el corazón derretido: batimiento de rodillas, y dolor en todos riñones, y los rostros de todos tomarán negrura.

¿Qué es de la morada de los leones, y de la majada de los cachorros de los leones, donde se recogía el león, y la leona, y los cachorros del león, y no había quien les pusiese miedo?

El león arrebataba en abundancia para sus cachorros, y ahogaba para sus leonas, y henchía de presa sus cavernas, y de robo sus moradas.

Heme aquí contra ti, dice Jehová de los ejércitos. Encenderé y reduciré á humo tus carros, y espada devorará tus leoncillos; y raeré de la tierra tu robo, y nunca más se oirá voz de tus embajadores.
The lions' den emptied
Verses 11-12 reach for Assyria's favorite self-image. Its kings stamped lions everywhere; here Nahum asks, "Where is the den of the lions?" and recalls how the lion once tore enough for his cubs and filled his caves with the kill. The predator that frightened everyone is suddenly a question with no answer.
The chapter signs off in God's own voice: "Behold, I am against you" (v.13), promising to burn the chariots, devour the young lions, and silence the messengers. The same envoys who once carried Assyria's threats abroad will simply stop being heard, a quiet ending to a loud empire.
