Proverbs 14
This long chapter (35 verses) zooms out from the individual to the household and the nation. It opens with the wise woman who builds her house while the foolish tears it down (v.1) and closes with a king whose favor and wrath fall on servants by their conduct (v.35). A sober realism runs through it: laughter that hides a heavy heart (v.13), a way that seems right but ends in death (v.12). Watch v.34, "Righteousness exalts a nation," widening the lens from private virtue to public destiny.

He who walks in his uprightness fears the LORD, but he who is perverse in his ways despises him.

The poor person is shunned even by his own neighbor, but the rich person has many friends.

Don’t they go astray who plot evil? But love and faithfulness belong to those who plan good.

Wisdom rests in the heart of one who has understanding, and is even made known in the inward part of fools.

What seems right
Verse 12 — "There is a way which seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death" — is the chapter's hinge, warning that intuition is not a safe guide. It pairs with v.15, where the simple believe everything and the prudent weigh their steps.
Around these sit verses on inner life the outside can't see: v.10, the heart that knows its own bitterness, and v.13, mirth ending in heaviness. The chapter insists that appearances and feelings both need testing.
