Proverbs 19
Poverty, friendship, and family discipline weave through this chapter, returning twice to the false witness who 'shall not be unpunished' (vv. 5, 9). It observes coldly how wealth pulls friends near and poverty drives even relatives away (vv. 4, 7), then sets a poor man's integrity above a fool's perverse lips. Fatherly instruction sharpens toward the end: discipline your son while there is hope (v. 18), listen to counsel (v. 20), and the plea — 'my son' — to keep hearing knowledge (v. 27).

What endures when plans don't
Verse 21 anchors the chapter: many plans fill a man's heart, but the LORD's counsel will prevail. Around it, human schemes and shifting friendships prove fragile.
Against that fragility stand the kindnesses that hold — pity on the poor counted as lending to the LORD (v. 17), the prudent wife who comes 'from the LORD' (v. 14), and the fear of the LORD that 'leads to life' and rest (v. 23).
