Proverbs 6
Three sharp practical warnings open the chapter before the familiar theme returns: don't co-sign a stranger's debt (free yourself "like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter," v.1-5), don't be a sluggard (go learn from the ant, v.6-11), and beware the troublemaker who winks and signals mischief (v.12-15). Watch for the numbered list at verse 16 and the return, at verse 24, to the warning against the adulteress.

My son, if you have become collateral for your neighbor, if you have struck your hands in pledge for a stranger,

you are trapped by the words of your mouth; you are ensnared with the words of your mouth.

Do this now, my son, and deliver yourself, since you have come into the hand of your neighbor. Go, humble yourself. Press your plea with your neighbor.

Give no sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids.
- 5
Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler.

Go to the ant, you sluggard. Consider her ways, and be wise;
- 7
which having no chief, overseer, or ruler,
- 8
provides her bread in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest.

How long will you sleep, sluggard? When will you arise out of your sleep?

A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep—
- 11
so your poverty will come as a robber, and your scarcity as an armed man.

A worthless person, a man of iniquity, is he who walks with a perverse mouth,
- 13
who winks with his eyes, who signals with his feet, who motions with his fingers,
- 14
in whose heart is perverseness, who devises evil continually, who always sows discord.
- 15
Therefore his calamity will come suddenly. He will be broken suddenly, and that without remedy.

There are six things which the LORD hates; yes, seven which are an abomination to him:

arrogant eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
- 18
a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are swift in running to mischief,
- 19
a false witness who utters lies, and he who sows discord among brothers.

My son, keep your father’s commandment, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching.

Bind them continually on your heart. Tie them around your neck.

When you walk, it will lead you. When you sleep, it will watch over you. When you awake, it will talk with you.

For the commandment is a lamp, and the law is light. Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,

to keep you from the immoral woman, from the flattery of the wayward wife’s tongue.

Don’t lust after her beauty in your heart, neither let her captivate you with her eyelids.

For a prostitute reduces you to a piece of bread. The adulteress hunts for your precious life.

Can a man scoop fire into his lap, and his clothes not be burned?
- 28
Or can one walk on hot coals, and his feet not be scorched?
- 29
So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife. Whoever touches her will not be unpunished.

Men don’t despise a thief if he steals to satisfy himself when he is hungry,
- 31
but if he is found, he shall restore seven times. He shall give all the wealth of his house.

He who commits adultery with a woman is void of understanding. He who does it destroys his own soul.

He will get wounds and dishonor. His reproach will not be wiped away.

For jealousy arouses the fury of the husband. He won’t spare in the day of vengeance.

He won’t regard any ransom, neither will he rest content, though you give many gifts.

Um pouco de sono, um pouco de cochilo, um pouco de cruzar as mãos para dormir—

assim a sua pobreza virá como um assaltante, e a sua escassez como um homem armado.

A pessoa inútil, o homem iníquo, é aquele que anda com a boca perversa,

que pisca os olhos, que faz sinais com os pés, que aponta com os dedos,

em cujo coração há perversidade, que planeja o mal continuamente, que sempre semeia discórdia.

Portanto, a sua calamidade virá de repente. Ele será quebrado de repente, e isso sem remédio.

Há seis coisas que o SENHOR odeia; sim, sete que são uma abominação para ele:

olhos arrogantes, língua mentirosa, mãos que derramam sangue inocente,

Quando você andar, isso o guiará. Quando você dormir, isso o protegerá. Quando você acordar, falará com você.

Pois o mandamento é uma lâmpada, e a lei é luz. As repreensões da instrução são o caminho da vida,

para guardá-lo da mulher imoral, das lisonjas da língua da esposa rebelde.

Não cobice a beleza dela no seu coração, nem deixe que ela o cative com as suas pálpebras.

Pois uma prostituta o reduz a um pedaço de pão. A adúltera caça a sua vida preciosa.

Pode um homem colocar fogo no seu colo, e as suas roupas não se queimarem?

Ou pode alguém andar sobre brasas, e os seus pés não se queimarem?

Assim é aquele que se deita com a esposa do seu próximo. Quem quer que a toque não ficará impune.

Os homens não desprezam o ladrão se ele rouba para saciar a fome,

mas se for pego, deverá restituir sete vezes. Ele entregará todos os bens da sua casa.

Aquele que comete adultério com uma mulher é falto de entendimento. Aquele que faz isso destrói a sua própria alma.

Ele receberá feridas e desonra. A sua vergonha não será apagada.

Pois o ciúme desperta a fúria do marido. Ele não poupará no dia da vingança.

Ele não aceitará nenhum resgate, nem se contentará, ainda que você lhe dê muitos presentes.
Six things, yes seven
Verses 16-19 use a stair-step count: "six things which the LORD hates; yes, seven which are an abomination to him." The list runs from arrogant eyes and a lying tongue to hands that shed innocent blood, ending on the one that recurs throughout Proverbs: he who sows discord among brothers.
The final section presses the adultery warning with cause-and-effect images: fire carried in the lap, walking on hot coals (v.27-28). Unlike a hungry thief who can repay sevenfold (v.31), this offense leaves a reproach that "will not be wiped away" (v.33).
