Psalms 109
One of the harshest psalms in the book. A man slandered "without a cause," who returns prayer for hatred (v.4), pours out a long curse against his accuser (vv.6-19): may his days be few, his children fatherless, his office taken by another, his name blotted out. The shift comes at verse 21. The voice drops the cursing and pleads as one who is "poor and needy," knees weak from fasting, fading like an evening shadow. It ends with God standing at the right hand of the needy — answering the adversary who stood there earlier.

God of my praise, don’t remain silent,

for they have opened the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of deceit against me. They have spoken to me with a lying tongue.

They have also surrounded me with words of hatred, and fought against me without a cause.

In return for my love, they are my adversaries; but I am in prayer.

They have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love.

Set a wicked man over him. Let an adversary stand at his right hand.

When he is judged, let him come out guilty. Let his prayer be turned into sin.

Let his days be few. Let another take his office.
- 9
Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.
- 10
Let his children be wandering beggars. Let them be sought from their ruins.

Let the creditor seize all that he has. Let strangers plunder the fruit of his labor.
- 12
Let there be no one to extend kindness to him, neither let there be anyone to have pity on his fatherless children.

Let his posterity be cut off. In the generation following let their name be blotted out.

Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered by the LORD. Don’t let the sin of his mother be blotted out.

Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off their memory from the earth;

because he didn’t remember to show kindness, but persecuted the poor and needy man, the broken in heart, to kill them.

Yes, he loved cursing, and it came to him. He didn’t delight in blessing, and it was far from him.

He clothed himself also with cursing as with his garment. It came into his inward parts like water, like oil into his bones.

Let it be to him as the clothing with which he covers himself, for the belt that is always around him.
- 20
This is the reward of my adversaries from the LORD, of those who speak evil against my soul.

But deal with me, GOD the Lord, for your name’s sake, because your loving kindness is good, deliver me;

for I am poor and needy. My heart is wounded within me.

I fade away like an evening shadow. I am shaken off like a locust.

My knees are weak through fasting. My body is thin and lacks fat.
- 25
I have also become a reproach to them. When they see me, they shake their head.

Help me, LORD, my God. Save me according to your loving kindness;
- 27
that they may know that this is your hand; that you, LORD, have done it.
- 28
They may curse, but you bless. When they arise, they will be shamed, but your servant shall rejoice.

Let my adversaries be clothed with dishonor. Let them cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.

I will give great thanks to the LORD with my mouth. Yes, I will praise him among the multitude.

For he will stand at the right hand of the needy, to save him from those who judge his soul.

Ó Deus do meu louvor, não fique em silêncio,

pois abriram a boca do ímpio e a boca do engano contra mim. Falaram comigo com língua mentirosa.

Eles também me cercaram com palavras de ódio, e lutaram contra mim sem motivo.

Em troca do meu amor, eles são meus adversários; mas eu me dedico à oração.

Eles me retribuíram o mal pelo bem, e ódio pelo meu amor.

Coloque um homem ímpio sobre ele. Que um adversário fique à sua direita.

Que os seus filhos fiquem órfãos, e a sua esposa, viúva.

Que os seus filhos sejam mendigos errantes. Que sejam procurados em suas ruínas.

Que o credor se apodere de tudo o que ele tem. Que estranhos saquem o fruto do seu trabalho.

Que não haja ninguém para lhe estender bondade, nem haja quem tenha pena dos seus filhos órfãos.

Que a sua posteridade seja exterminada. Na geração seguinte, que o nome deles seja apagado.

Que a iniquidade de seus pais seja lembrada pelo SENHOR. Não deixe que o pecado de sua mãe seja apagado.

Que estejam diante do SENHOR continuamente, para que ele elimine da terra a memória deles;

porque ele não se lembrou de mostrar bondade, mas perseguiu o homem pobre e necessitado, e o de coração quebrantado, para matá-los.

Sim, ele amou a maldição, e ela veio sobre ele. Ele não teve prazer na bênção, e ela se afastou dele.

Ele também se vestiu de maldição como se fosse sua roupa. Ela entrou em seu interior como água, e como óleo em seus ossos.

Que isso lhe seja como a roupa com a qual se cobre, como o cinto que está sempre ao redor dele.

Esta é a recompensa dos meus adversários da parte do SENHOR, daqueles que falam o mal contra a minha alma.

Mas aja em meu favor, ó DEUS, o Senhor, por amor do seu nome; porque o seu amor leal é bom, livre-me;

pois sou pobre e necessitado. Meu coração está ferido dentro de mim.

Eu desapareço como a sombra do entardecer. Sou sacudido para longe como um gafanhoto.

Meus joelhos estão fracos por causa do jejum. Meu corpo está magro e sem gordura.
- 25
Eu também me tornei motivo de zombaria para eles. Quando me veem, balançam a cabeça.

Ajude-me, SENHOR, meu Deus. Salve-me segundo o seu amor leal;
- 27
para que saibam que esta é a sua mão; que o SENHOR mesmo fez isso.

Eles podem amaldiçoar, mas o Senhor abençoa. Quando se levantarem, serão envergonhados, mas o seu servo se alegrará.

Que os meus adversários sejam vestidos de desonra. Que eles se cubram com a sua própria vergonha como se fosse um manto.

Darei muitas graças ao SENHOR com a minha boca. Sim, eu o louvarei no meio da multidão.

Pois ele se colocará à direita do necessitado, para salvá-lo daqueles que julgam a sua alma.
Who is cursing whom
Verses 6-19 are so violent that some read them as the enemies' words quoted back — the curse the accusers aimed at the speaker, now reported. Whether quotation or the psalmist's own cry, verse 20 labels it "the reward of my adversaries from the LORD," handing the verdict to God rather than the victim's own hand.
The geometry of the "right hand" frames the whole psalm: in verse 6 a hostile adversary stands at the accused's right; in verse 31 the LORD stands at the right of the needy. The same position, opposite outcome.
