Psalms 121
An Ascents song built as a dialogue. It opens with a pilgrim's worried question — eyes raised to the hills, asking where help comes from (v.1) — and the rest is answer: help comes from the LORD, maker of heaven and earth, who neither slumbers nor sleeps. Note the single repeated verb: "keep." God keeps your foot, keeps Israel, keeps your soul, keeps your going out and coming in — six times, the road's one promise.
- 1
I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from?
- 2
My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
- 3
He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber.
- 4
Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
- 5
The LORD is your keeper. The LORD is your shade on your right hand.
- 6
The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.
- 7
The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul.
- 8
The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.
Why the hills are not the answer
The hills along the climb could hide bandits or shrines to other gods; the raised eyes are anxious, not admiring. The reply turns past the hills to the One who made them, promising shade by day and protection from sun and moon (vv.5-6) for the whole journey, "from this time forward, and forever more."
