Psalms 136

Twenty-six verses, and every single one ends the same way: "for his loving kindness endures forever." The leader names an act of God — creation, the exodus, the gift of the land — and the people answer with that refrain, line after line. It's antiphonal worship laid bare. Read the first half of each verse as the story; the repeated half is the congregation's reply.

Creation and exodus in one breath

The sequence is deliberate: it moves from making the heavens, sun, and moon (vv. 5-9) straight into striking Egypt's firstborn and dividing the Red Sea (vv. 10-15). The God who shaped the cosmos is the same one who brought Israel out and now gives food to every creature (v. 25). One mercy runs through all of it.
