Psalms 26

An unusual prayer: the speaker invites God to put him on trial. "Judge me" and "examine me, prove me, try my heart and my mind" (v.1-2) open a plea built on having kept clear of deceitful men and the assembly of evildoers. Watch the contrast of company. The psalm sorts people by who they sit with: not with the deceitful or bloodthirsty, but going about God's altar and standing in the congregations to bless him.

An appeal to be examined, not excused

Most laments ask God to overlook the speaker; this one asks him to look closer. The confidence rests on conduct already lived, walking "in my integrity" (v.1, repeated v.11), washing the hands in innocence around the altar.

Yet it is not pure self-reliance. The same verse that reaffirms integrity also asks, "Redeem me, and be merciful to me" (v.11). Even the upright life ends its prayer leaning on mercy, not on its own record.
