Psalms 50
God convenes a courtroom. He summons the earth from sunrise to sunset, shines out of Zion with fire and storm, and calls heaven and earth as witnesses to judge his own covenant people. Watch the surprise of the charge: God is not short of sacrifices. He owns "the livestock on a thousand hills" (v.10) and would not tell us if he were hungry (v.12). The case is about what worship is actually for.

The Mighty One, God, the LORD, speaks, and calls the earth from sunrise to sunset.

Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines out.

Our God comes, and does not keep silent. A fire devours before him. It is very stormy around him.

He calls to the heavens above, to the earth, that he may judge his people:
- 5
“Gather my saints together to me, those who have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.”

The heavens shall declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge. Selah.

“Hear, my people, and I will speak. Israel, I will testify against you. I am God, your God.
- 8
I don’t rebuke you for your sacrifices. Your burnt offerings are continually before me.
- 9
I have no need for a bull from your stall, nor male goats from your pens.
- 10
For every animal of the forest is mine, and the livestock on a thousand hills.
- 11
I know all the birds of the mountains. The wild animals of the field are mine.
- 12
If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.

Will I eat the meat of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?
- 14
Offer to God the sacrifice of thanksgiving. Pay your vows to the Most High.

Call on me in the day of trouble. I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”

But to the wicked God says, “What right do you have to declare my statutes, that you have taken my covenant on your lips,
- 17
since you hate instruction, and throw my words behind you?
- 18
When you saw a thief, you consented with him, and have participated with adulterers.
- 19
“You give your mouth to evil. Your tongue frames deceit.
- 20
You sit and speak against your brother. You slander your own mother’s son.
- 21
You have done these things, and I kept silent. You thought that I was just like you. I will rebuke you, and accuse you in front of your eyes.

“Now consider this, you who forget God, lest I tear you into pieces, and there be no one to deliver.
- 23
Whoever offers the sacrifice of thanksgiving glorifies me, and prepares his way so that I will show God’s salvation to him.”

O Poderoso, Deus, o SENHOR, fala, e convoca a terra, do nascer ao pôr do sol.

De Sião, a perfeição da beleza, Deus resplandece.

Nosso Deus vem, e não guarda silêncio. Um fogo devora diante dele. Ao seu redor há uma grande tempestade.

Ele convoca os céus lá do alto, e a terra, para julgar o seu povo:

“Reúnam os meus santos a mim, aqueles que fizeram uma aliança comigo por meio de sacrifícios.”

Os céus anunciarão a sua justiça, pois o próprio Deus é o juiz. Selá.

“Ouça, meu povo, e eu falarei. Israel, eu testemunharei contra você. Eu sou Deus, o seu Deus.

Não repreendo você por seus sacrifícios. Seus holocaustos estão continuamente diante de mim.
- 9
Não tenho necessidade de um touro do seu estábulo, nem de bodes dos seus currais.
- 10
Pois todo animal da floresta é meu, e o gado em milhares de colinas.
- 11
Conheço todas as aves dos montes. Os animais selvagens do campo são meus.
- 12
Se eu tivesse fome, não diria a você, pois o mundo é meu, e tudo o que nele há.
- 13
Acaso comerei a carne de touros, ou beberei o sangue de bodes?
- 14
Ofereça a Deus o sacrifício de ação de graças. Cumpra os seus votos para com o Altíssimo.
- 15
Clame a mim no dia da angústia. Eu o livrarei, e você me honrará.”

Mas ao ímpio Deus diz: “Que direito você tem de declarar os meus estatutos, e de tomar a minha aliança em seus lábios,

visto que você odeia a instrução, e lança as minhas palavras para trás de você?

Quando você via um ladrão, consentia com ele, e participava com os adúlteros.

“Você entrega a sua boca ao mal. Sua língua trama o engano.
- 20
Você se assenta e fala contra o seu irmão. Você calunia o filho da sua própria mãe.
- 21
Você fez estas coisas, e eu guardei silêncio. Você pensou que eu era exatamente como você. Eu o repreenderei, e o acusarei diante dos seus olhos.

“Agora considerem isto, vocês que se esquecem de Deus, para que eu não os despedace, sem que haja quem os livre.
- 23
Quem oferece o sacrifício de ação de graças me glorifica, e prepara o seu caminho para que eu lhe mostre a salvação de Deus.”
Two defendants, one verdict
The speech splits. To the faithful (v.7-15): stop imagining God needs your bulls; offer thanksgiving and pay your vows, and "call on me in the day of trouble." To the wicked (v.16-21): the man who recites the statutes while befriending thieves and slandering his brother is told God's silence was not approval.
The closing line ties it together — "whoever offers the sacrifice of thanksgiving glorifies me" (v.23).
