Psalms 61
A short prayer sent up 'from the end of the earth' by someone whose heart is overwhelmed and far from home. The plea is simple: lead me to the rock that is higher than I, where God has already proven a refuge. Midway it shifts unexpectedly from the singer's own safety to the king's: longer life, an everlasting throne, and a vow to keep singing daily. Watch the move from personal shelter to the throne it protects.
- 1
Hear my cry, God. Listen to my prayer.
- 2
From the end of the earth, I will call to you when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
- 3
For you have been a refuge for me, a strong tower from the enemy.
- 4
I will dwell in your tent forever. I will take refuge in the shelter of your wings. Selah.
- 5
For you, God, have heard my vows. You have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.
- 6
You will prolong the king’s life. His years will be for generations.
- 7
He shall be enthroned in God’s presence forever. Appoint your loving kindness and truth, that they may preserve him.
- 8
So I will sing praise to your name forever, that I may fulfill my vows daily.
- 1
Al Músico principal: sobre Neginoth: Salmo de David. OYE, oh Dios, mi clamor; á mi oración atiende.
- 2
- 5
Porque tú, oh Dios, has oído mis votos, has dado heredad á los que temen tu nombre.
- 6
Días sobre días añadirás al rey: sus años serán como generación y generación.
- 7
Estará para siempre delante de Dios: misericordia y verdad prepara que lo conserven.
- 8
Así cantaré tu nombre para siempre, pagando mis votos cada día.
From a private rock to the king's throne
Verses 1-4 are intimate — tent, wings, a rock higher than the speaker. Then verses 6-7 widen abruptly to the king, asking that his years run 'for generations' and that loving kindness and truth stand guard over him. The same shelter the singer seeks for himself is asked, on a national scale, for the throne; the daily vow-keeping of verse 8 ties the two requests back together.
