Psalms 70
Five urgent verses, all speed and need: "Hurry, God, to deliver me. Come quickly to help me." There is no scenery, no backstory — just the bare cry of someone whose pursuers are closing in and who calls them mockers shouting "Aha! Aha!" It ends as it began, repeating the plea not to delay. The whole psalm is a single held breath between danger and rescue.
- 1
Hurry, God, to deliver me. Come quickly to help me, LORD.
- 2
Let them be disappointed and confounded who seek my soul. Let those who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace.
- 3
Let them be turned because of their shame who say, “Aha! Aha!”
- 4
Let all those who seek you rejoice and be glad in you. Let those who love your salvation continually say, “Let God be exalted!”
- 5
But I am poor and needy. Come to me quickly, God. You are my help and my deliverer. LORD, don’t delay.
- 1
Apressa-te, ó Deus, em me livrar. Vem depressa me socorrer, SENHOR.
- 2
- 5
Eu, porém, sou pobre e necessitado. Vem a mim depressa, ó Deus. Tu és o meu socorro e o meu libertador. SENHOR, não te demores.
Almost a copy of Psalm 40
These verses are nearly identical to Psalm 40:13-17, lifted out and made to stand alone as a compact emergency prayer. Set side by side with the long, scene-filled Psalm 69 before it, Psalm 70 shows the Psalter keeping both forms: the sprawling lament and the short dart of a prayer that needs no introduction.
