Psalms 96
A missionary anthem inside the Psalter. The "new song" (v.1) is not for Israel alone — "all the earth," the nations, the families of peoples are summoned to declare God's glory (v.3) and bring offerings into his courts (v.8). The argument hinges on a sharp comparison: "all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the LORD made the heavens" (v.5). Watch creation itself — sea, field, trees — drafted into the choir at the end.
- 1
Sing to the LORD a new song! Sing to the LORD, all the earth.
- 2
Sing to the LORD! Bless his name! Proclaim his salvation from day to day!
- 3
Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples.
- 4
For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised! He is to be feared above all gods.
- 5
For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the LORD made the heavens.
- 6
Honor and majesty are before him. Strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
- 7
Ascribe to the LORD, you families of nations, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
- 8
Ascribe to the LORD the glory due to his name. Bring an offering, and come into his courts.
- 9
Worship the LORD in holy array. Tremble before him, all the earth.
- 10
Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns.” The world is also established. It can’t be moved. He will judge the peoples with equity.
- 11
Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice. Let the sea roar, and its fullness!
- 12
Let the field and all that is in it exult! Then all the trees of the woods shall sing for joy
- 13
before the LORD; for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, the peoples with his truth.
- 1
Cantem ao SENHOR um cântico novo! Cantem ao SENHOR, toda a terra.
- 2
Cantem ao SENHOR! Bendigam o seu nome! Proclamem a sua salvação dia após dia!
- 3
- 9
Adorem ao SENHOR em trajes santos. Tremam diante dele, toda a terra.
- 10
Digam entre as nações: “O SENHOR reina.” O mundo também está firmado. Não pode ser abalado. Ele julgará os povos com equidade.
- 11
Alegrem-se os céus, e regozije-se a terra. Ruja o mar e a sua plenitude!
- 12
Exulte o campo e tudo o que nele há! Então todas as árvores do bosque cantarão de alegria
- 13
diante do SENHOR; pois ele vem, pois ele vem para julgar a terra. Ele julgará o mundo com justiça, e os povos com a sua verdade.
When the trees join the song
The psalm widens its audience three times: from worshipers, to the nations, to the natural world that roars and exults (vv.11-12). The reason given is the same each time — the LORD reigns and "he comes to judge the earth" (v.13), and that coming is cause for joy, not dread.
Judgment here is good news for creation: it means righteousness and truth set things right, which is why even the forest can "sing for joy" before a king who is coming.
