Revelation 9
The fifth and sixth trumpets bring the first two of the three woes the eagle announced. A fallen star unlocks the abyss; smoke pours out and from it come scorpion-tailed locusts shaped like war-horses, allowed to torment (not kill) for five months only those without God's seal. Then four angels bound at the Euphrates are released, commanding a 200-million cavalry that kills a third of humanity. Watch the named ruler, Abaddon/Apollyon, and the chapter's grim final note.

The fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star from the sky which had fallen to the earth. The key to the pit of the abyss was given to him.

He opened the pit of the abyss, and smoke went up out of the pit, like the smoke from a burning furnace. The sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke from the pit.

Then out of the smoke came locusts on the earth, and power was given to them, as the scorpions of the earth have power.

They were told that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree, but only those people who don’t have God’s seal on their foreheads.

They were given power, not to kill them, but to torment them for five months. Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a person.

In those days people will seek death, and will in no way find it. They will desire to die, and death will flee from them.

The shapes of the locusts were like horses prepared for war. On their heads were something like golden crowns, and their faces were like people’s faces.

They had hair like women’s hair, and their teeth were like those of lions.

They had breastplates like breastplates of iron. The sound of their wings was like the sound of many chariots and horses rushing to war.

They have tails like those of scorpions, with stingers. In their tails they have power to harm men for five months.

They have over them as king the angel of the abyss. His name in Hebrew is “Abaddon”, but in Greek, he has the name “Apollyon”.

The first woe is past. Behold, there are still two woes coming after this.

The sixth angel sounded. I heard a voice from the horns of the golden altar which is before God,
- 14
saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Free the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates!”

The four angels were freed who had been prepared for that hour and day and month and year, so that they might kill one third of mankind.

The number of the armies of the horsemen was two hundred million. I heard the number of them.

Thus I saw the horses in the vision and those who sat on them, having breastplates of fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulfur yellow; and the horses’ heads resembled lions’ heads. Out of their mouths proceed fire, smoke, and sulfur.

By these three plagues, one third of mankind was killed: by the fire, the smoke, and the sulfur, which proceeded out of their mouths.

For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails. For their tails are like serpents, and have heads; and with them they harm.
- 20
The rest of mankind, who were not killed with these plagues, didn’t repent of the works of their hands, that they wouldn’t worship demons, and the idols of gold, and of silver, and of brass, and of stone, and of wood, which can’t see, hear, or walk.

They didn’t repent of their murders, their sorceries, their sexual immorality, or their thefts.

O quinto anjo tocou a sua trombeta, e vi uma estrela do céu que havia caído na terra. A chave do poço do abismo foi-lhe dada.

Ele abriu o poço do abismo, e subiu fumaça do poço, como a fumaça de uma fornalha ardente. O sol e o ar escureceram por causa da fumaça do poço.

Foi-lhes dito que não causassem dano à grama da terra, nem a qualquer coisa verde, nem a árvore alguma, mas apenas àquelas pessoas que não têm o selo de Deus em suas testas.

Foi-lhes dado poder, não para matá-los, mas para atormentá-los durante cinco meses. O tormento deles era como o tormento de um escorpião quando fere uma pessoa.

Naqueles dias as pessoas buscarão a morte, e de modo algum a encontrarão. Elas desejarão morrer, mas a morte fugirá delas.

A aparência dos gafanhotos era semelhante a cavalos preparados para a guerra. Sobre as suas cabeças havia algo como coroas de ouro, e os seus rostos eram como rostos humanos.

Eles tinham cabelos como cabelos de mulheres, e os seus dentes eram como os de leões.

Eles tinham couraças como couraças de ferro. O som das suas asas era como o som de muitas carruagens e cavalos correndo para a guerra.

Eles têm caudas como as de escorpiões, com ferrões. Em suas caudas eles têm poder para causar dano aos homens por cinco meses.

Eles têm sobre si como rei o anjo do abismo. O seu nome em hebraico é “Abadom”, mas em grego o seu nome é “Apolião”.

O primeiro ai passou. Eis que ainda vêm dois ais depois destas coisas.

O sexto anjo tocou a sua trombeta. Ouvi uma voz vinda das pontas do altar de ouro que está diante de Deus,

dizendo ao sexto anjo que tinha a trombeta: “Solte os quatro anjos que estão amarrados junto ao grande rio Eufrates!”

Foram soltos os quatro anjos que haviam sido preparados para aquela hora, e dia, e mês, e ano, para que matassem um terço da humanidade.

O número dos exércitos de cavaleiros era de duzentos milhões. Eu ouvi o seu número.
- 17
Assim vi os cavalos na visão e os que estavam montados neles, tendo couraças de vermelho fogo, de azul jacinto e de amarelo enxofre; e as cabeças dos cavalos eram semelhantes a cabeças de leões. De suas bocas saíam fogo, fumaça e enxofre.
- 18
Por estas três pragas foi morto um terço da humanidade: pelo fogo, pela fumaça e pelo enxofre, que saíam de suas bocas.
- 19
Pois o poder dos cavalos está nas suas bocas e nas suas caudas. Porque as suas caudas são semelhantes a serpentes, e têm cabeças; e com elas causam dano.
- 20
O resto da humanidade, que não foi morta por estas pragas, não se arrependeu das obras de suas mãos, deixando de adorar os demônios e os ídolos de ouro, de prata, de bronze, de pedra e de madeira, que não podem ver, nem ouvir, nem andar.
- 21
Não se arrependeram de seus assassinatos, de suas feitiçarias, de sua imoralidade sexual, nem de seus roubos.
The judgments that change no one
The locusts are restrained from killing and from harming the sealed of chapter 7, so the torment is targeted and limited; people will seek death and not find it. The horsemen go further, killing by fire, smoke, and sulfur from their mouths and serpent-headed tails.
The sting is in verses 20-21: the survivors still refuse to repent of worshiping idols of gold, silver, and stone, of their murders, sorceries, immorality, and thefts. The plagues are real but the chapter's real subject is a hardness no catastrophe can crack.
