Romans 10

The grief of chapter 9 becomes prayer: Paul longs for Israel's salvation. He grants they have zeal for God, but it is misaimed — chasing a righteousness of their own instead of submitting to God's. Christ is the fulfillment of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes (v.4).

Brothers, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God is for Israel, that they may be saved.

For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.
3
For being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, they didn’t subject themselves to the righteousness of God.
4
For Christ is the fulfillment of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

For Moses writes about the righteousness of the law, “The one who does them will live by them.”
6
But the righteousness which is of faith says this, “Don’t say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down);
7
or, ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead.)”

But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart;” that is, the word of faith which we preach:

that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
10
For with the heart one believes resulting in righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation.
11
For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in him will not be disappointed.”
12
For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, and is rich to all who call on him.
13
For, “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
14
How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in him whom they have not heard? How will they hear without a preacher?
15
And how will they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the Good News of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!”
16
But they didn’t all listen to the glad news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?”
17
So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
18
But I say, didn’t they hear? Yes, most certainly, “Their sound went out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.”
19
But I ask, didn’t Israel know? First Moses says, “I will provoke you to jealousy with that which is no nation. I will make you angry with a nation void of understanding.”
20
Isaiah is very bold and says, “I was found by those who didn’t seek me. I was revealed to those who didn’t ask for me.”
21
But about Israel he says, “All day long I stretched out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.”

Irmãos, o desejo do meu coração e a minha oração a Deus por Israel é para que eles sejam salvos.

Pois dou testemunho a respeito deles de que têm zelo por Deus, mas não segundo o conhecimento.

Pois, ignorando a justiça de Deus e buscando estabelecer a sua própria justiça, não se sujeitaram à justiça de Deus.

Pois Cristo é o cumprimento da lei para justiça a todo aquele que crê.

Pois Moisés escreve sobre a justiça da lei: “Aquele que fizer estas coisas viverá por elas.”

Mas a justiça que é da fé diz assim: “Não diga em seu coração: ‘Quem subirá ao céu?’ (isto é, para trazer Cristo para baixo);
7
ou: ‘Quem descerá ao abismo?’ (isto é, para levantar Cristo dentre os mortos).”

Mas o que ela diz? “A palavra está perto de você, na sua boca e no seu coração”; isto é, a palavra da fé que pregamos:
9
que, se você confessar com a sua boca que Jesus é Senhor e crer em seu coração que Deus o ressuscitou dentre os mortos, você será salvo.
10
Pois com o coração se crê para a justiça, e com a boca se faz confissão para a salvação.
11
Pois a Escritura diz: “Todo aquele que nele crer não será decepcionado.”
12
Pois não há distinção entre judeu e grego; porque o mesmo Senhor é Senhor de todos, e é rico para com todos os que o invocam.
13
Porque: “Todo aquele que invocar o nome do Senhor será salvo.”
14
Como, pois, invocarão aquele em quem não creram? E como crerão naquele de quem não ouviram falar? E como ouvirão, se não há quem pregue?
15
E como pregarão, se não forem enviados? Como está escrito: “Quão formosos são os pés dos que pregam as Boas Novas de paz, dos que trazem alegres novas de boas coisas!”
16
Mas nem todos deram ouvidos às boas novas. Pois Isaías diz: “Senhor, quem creu em nossa mensagem?”
17
Logo, a fé vem pelo ouvir, e o ouvir pela palavra de Deus.
18
Mas eu pergunto: eles não ouviram? Sim, com toda a certeza: “O som deles saiu por toda a terra, e as suas palavras até os confins do mundo.”
19
Mas eu pergunto: Israel não sabia? Primeiro Moisés diz: “Eu os provocarei a ciúmes com aqueles que não são nação. Eu os provocarei à ira com uma nação sem entendimento.”
20
Isaías é muito ousado e diz: “Fui achado pelos que não me buscavam. Fui revelado aos que não perguntavam por mim.”
21
Mas a respeito de Israel ele diz: “O dia todo estendi as minhas mãos a um povo desobediente e rebelde.”

The word is near you

Paul rereads Deuteronomy: you need not ascend to heaven or descend to the abyss, because the word is already in your mouth and heart (vv.6-8). Salvation comes by confessing Jesus as Lord and believing in the resurrection (v.9).

From there he builds the chain of vv.14-15 — calling, believing, hearing, preaching, sending — and ends on Israel as the disobedient people to whom God stretched out his hands all day.
