Quando Saul voltou de seguir os filisteus, foi-lhe dito: “Eis que David está no deserto de En Gedi”.
- 2
Então Saul tirou três mil homens escolhidos de todo Israel, e foi procurar Davi e seus homens nas rochas das cabras selvagens.

A propósito, ele chegou aos currais de ovelhas, onde havia uma caverna; e Saul entrou para se aliviar. Agora Davi e seus homens estavam hospedados nas partes mais internas da caverna.

Os homens de Davi lhe disseram: “Eis o dia em que Javé lhe disse: 'Eis que eu entregarei teu inimigo em tuas mãos, e tu lhe farás como bem te parecer'”. Então Davi levantou-se e cortou secretamente a saia do manto de Saul.

Afterward, o coração de David o golpeou porque ele havia cortado a saia de Saul.

Ele disse a seus homens: “Javé proíbe que eu faça isto a meu senhor, o ungido de Javé, para estender minha mão contra ele, já que ele é o ungido de Javé”.

Então David verificou seus homens com estas palavras, e não permitiu que eles se levantassem contra Saul. Saul se levantou da caverna, e seguiu seu caminho.

David também se levantou depois, e saiu da caverna e gritou atrás de Saul, dizendo: “Meu senhor, o rei”! Quando Saul olhou para trás, David se curvou com o rosto voltado para a terra, e mostrou respeito.

David disse a Saul: “Por que você escuta as palavras dos homens, dizendo: 'Eis que David procura te prejudicar?

Eis que hoje seus olhos viram como Javé te entregou hoje nas minhas mãos na caverna. Alguns me incitaram a matá-lo, mas eu o poupei. Eu disse: “Não estenderei minha mão contra meu senhor, pois ele é o ungido de Yahweh”.

Além disso, meu pai, eis que sim, veja a saia de seu manto em minha mão; pois, no que eu cortei a saia de seu manto e não o matei, saiba e veja que não há mal nem desobediência em minha mão. Eu não pequei contra você, apesar de você caçar para que minha vida o tire.

Que Yahweh julgue entre mim e você, e que Yahweh me vingue de você; mas minha mão não estará sobre você.

Como diz o provérbio dos antigos, “do mal vem a maldade;” mas minha mão não estará sobre vós.
- 14
Contra quem saiu o rei de Israel? A quem o senhor persegue? Um cão morto? Uma pulga?
- 15
Que Yahweh seja, portanto, juiz, e dê a sentença entre mim e você, e veja, e pleiteie minha causa, e me liberte de suas mãos”.

Quando Davi terminou de dizer estas palavras a Saul, ele disse: “É a sua voz, meu filho Davi? Saul levantou sua voz e chorou.

Ele disse a David: “Você é mais justo que eu; pois você me fez o bem, enquanto eu lhe fiz o mal”.
- 18
Você declarou hoje como lidou bem comigo, porque quando Javé me entregou em suas mãos, você não me matou.
- 19
Pois se um homem encontra seu inimigo, será que ele o deixará ir embora ileso? Portanto, que Iavé lhe recompense bem pelo que você me fez hoje.

Agora, eis que eu sei que você certamente será rei e que o reino de Israel será estabelecido em suas mãos.
- 21
Jura-me agora, portanto, por Javé, que não cortarás minha prole após mim, e que não destruirás meu nome fora da casa de meu pai”.

David jurou a Saul. Saul foi para casa, mas David e seus homens subiram para a fortaleza.

When Saul had returned from following the Philistines, he was told, “Behold, David is in the wilderness of En Gedi.”

Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men on the rocks of the wild goats.

He came to the sheep pens by the way, where there was a cave; and Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were staying in the innermost parts of the cave.

David’s men said to him, “Behold, the day of which the LORD said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.’” Then David arose and cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe secretly.

Afterward, David’s heart struck him because he had cut off Saul’s skirt.

He said to his men, “The LORD forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the LORD’s anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, since he is the LORD’s anointed.”

So David checked his men with these words, and didn’t allow them to rise against Saul. Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.

David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave and cried after Saul, saying, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth, and showed respect.

David said to Saul, “Why do you listen to men’s words, saying, ‘Behold, David seeks to harm you’?

Behold, today your eyes have seen how the LORD had delivered you today into my hand in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you. I said, ‘I will not stretch out my hand against my lord, for he is the LORD’s anointed.’

Moreover, my father, behold, yes, see the skirt of your robe in my hand; for in that I cut off the skirt of your robe and didn’t kill you, know and see that there is neither evil nor disobedience in my hand. I have not sinned against you, though you hunt for my life to take it.

May the LORD judge between me and you, and may the LORD avenge me of you; but my hand will not be on you.

As the proverb of the ancients says, ‘Out of the wicked comes wickedness;’ but my hand will not be on you.

Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom do you pursue? A dead dog? A flea?
- 15
May the LORD therefore be judge, and give sentence between me and you, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of your hand.”
- 16
It came to pass, when David had finished speaking these words to Saul, that Saul said, “Is that your voice, my son David?” Saul lifted up his voice and wept.

He said to David, “You are more righteous than I; for you have done good to me, whereas I have done evil to you.
- 18
You have declared today how you have dealt well with me, because when the LORD had delivered me up into your hand, you didn’t kill me.
- 19
For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away unharmed? Therefore may the LORD reward you good for that which you have done to me today.
- 20
Now, behold, I know that you will surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hand.
- 21
Swear now therefore to me by the LORD that you will not cut off my offspring after me, and that you will not destroy my name out of my father’s house.”
- 22
David swore to Saul. Saul went home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.
