João 6

Perto da Páscoa, Jesus alimenta cerca de cinco mil pessoas com cinco pães de cevada e dois peixes de um menino; depois atravessa o mar à noite, andando sobre as águas até os discípulos assustados. A multidão o persegue até Cafarnaum. O milagre vira ensino: Jesus se chama "o pão da vida" (v.35) e insiste até que comer sua carne e beber seu sangue divide quem o ouve. Repare como uma refeição gratuita esvazia o grupo.

Depois destas coisas, Jesus foi para o outro lado do mar da Galileia, que também é chamado de mar de Tiberíades.

Uma grande multidão o seguia, porque viam os sinais que ele fazia nos enfermos.

Jesus subiu ao monte e assentou-se ali com os seus discípulos.

Ora, a Páscoa, a festa dos judeus, estava próxima.
5
Então Jesus, levantando os olhos e vendo que uma grande multidão vinha a ele, disse a Filipe: “Onde compraremos pão, para que estes possam comer?”

Ele dizia isso para testá-lo, pois ele mesmo sabia o que estava para fazer.
7
Filipe lhe respondeu: “Duzentos denários de pão não são suficientes para eles, para que cada um deles receba um pouco.”

Um de seus discípulos, André, irmão de Simão Pedro, disse a ele:

“Há um rapaz aqui que tem cinco pães de cevada e dois peixes, mas o que é isso para tantos?”
10
Jesus disse: “Façam as pessoas se assentarem.” Ora, havia muita relva naquele lugar. Então os homens se assentaram, em número de cerca de cinco mil.
11
Jesus tomou os pães e, tendo dado graças, distribuiu-os aos discípulos, e os discípulos aos que estavam assentados; e da mesma forma os peixes, quanto eles queriam.
12
Quando estavam satisfeitos, ele disse aos seus discípulos: “Recolham os pedaços que sobraram, para que nada se perca.”
13
Então eles os recolheram, e encheram doze cestos com os pedaços dos cinco pães de cevada, que sobraram dos que haviam comido.
14
Vendo, pois, as pessoas o sinal que Jesus fizera, disseram: “Este é verdadeiramente o profeta que vem ao mundo.”
15
Jesus, pois, percebendo que estavam prestes a vir e levá-lo à força para fazê-lo rei, retirou-se novamente para o monte, sozinho.
16
Ao cair da tarde, seus discípulos desceram para o mar.
17
Entraram no barco e atravessavam o mar em direção a Cafarnaum. Já estava escuro, e Jesus ainda não tinha vindo até eles.
18
O mar estava agitado por um grande vento que soprava.
19
Tendo remado cerca de vinte e cinco ou trinta estádios, viram Jesus andando sobre o mar e se aproximando do barco; e ficaram com medo.
20
Mas ele lhes disse: “Sou eu. Não tenham medo.”
21
Então eles de bom grado o receberam no barco. Imediatamente o barco chegou à terra para onde iam.
22
No dia seguinte, a multidão que estava do outro lado do mar viu que não havia ali outro barco, exceto aquele em que seus discípulos haviam embarcado, e que Jesus não tinha entrado com seus discípulos no barco, mas que seus discípulos tinham ido embora sozinhos.
23
No entanto, barcos de Tiberíades chegaram perto do lugar onde comeram o pão, depois que o Senhor deu graças.
24
Quando, pois, a multidão viu que Jesus não estava ali, nem os seus discípulos, eles mesmos entraram nos barcos e foram para Cafarnaum, em busca de Jesus.
25
Quando o encontraram do outro lado do mar, perguntaram-lhe: “Rabi, quando chegaste aqui?”
26
Jesus lhes respondeu: “Com toda a certeza lhes digo: vocês me buscam, não porque viram sinais, mas porque comeram dos pães e se fartaram.
27
Não trabalhem pela comida que perece, mas pela comida que permanece para a vida eterna, a qual o Filho do Homem lhes dará. Porque Deus, o Pai, o selou.”
28
Disseram-lhe, pois: “O que devemos fazer, para realizarmos as obras de Deus?”
29
Jesus lhes respondeu: “A obra de Deus é esta: que vocês creiam naquele que ele enviou.”
30
Disseram-lhe, pois: “Que sinal, então, tu fazes, para que possamos ver e crer em ti? Que obra tu fazes?
31
Nossos pais comeram o maná no deserto. Como está escrito: ‘Ele lhes deu pão do céu para comer.’”
32
Jesus, pois, lhes disse: “Com toda a certeza lhes digo: não foi Moisés quem lhes deu o pão do céu, mas meu Pai lhes dá o verdadeiro pão do céu.
33
Porque o pão de Deus é aquele que desce do céu e dá vida ao mundo.”
34
Disseram-lhe, pois: “Senhor, dá-nos sempre desse pão.”
35
Jesus lhes disse: “Eu sou o pão da vida. Aquele que vem a mim não terá fome, e aquele que crê em mim nunca terá sede.
36
Mas eu lhes disse que vocês me viram, e ainda assim não creem.
37
Todos os que o Pai me dá virão a mim. E o que vem a mim, de modo nenhum o lançarei fora.
38
Pois eu desci do céu, não para fazer a minha própria vontade, mas a vontade daquele que me enviou.
39
Esta é a vontade do meu Pai que me enviou: que de tudo o que ele me deu eu não perca nada, mas o ressuscite no último dia.
40
Esta é a vontade daquele que me enviou: que todo aquele que vê o Filho e crê nele tenha a vida eterna; e eu o ressuscitarei no último dia.”
41
Os judeus, pois, murmuravam a respeito dele, porque disse: “Eu sou o pão que desceu do céu.”
42
Eles diziam: “Não é este Jesus, o filho de José, cujo pai e mãe nós conhecemos? Como, então, ele diz: ‘Eu desci do céu’?”
43
Portanto, Jesus lhes respondeu: “Não murmurem entre si.
44
Ninguém pode vir a mim, a menos que o Pai que me enviou o atraia; e eu o ressuscitarei no último dia.
45
Está escrito nos profetas: ‘Eles serão todos ensinados por Deus.’ Portanto, todo aquele que ouve do Pai e aprende, vem a mim.
46
Não que alguém tenha visto o Pai, exceto aquele que é de Deus. Este tem visto o Pai.
47
Com toda a certeza lhes digo: aquele que crê em mim tem a vida eterna.
48
Eu sou o pão da vida.
49
Seus pais comeram o maná no deserto e morreram.
50
Este é o pão que desce do céu, para que qualquer um possa comer dele e não morrer.
51
Eu sou o pão vivo que desceu do céu. Se alguém comer deste pão, viverá para sempre. Sim, o pão que eu darei pela vida do mundo é a minha carne.”
52
Os judeus, pois, discutiam entre si, dizendo: “Como pode este homem nos dar a sua carne para comer?”
53
Jesus, pois, lhes disse: “Com toda a certeza lhes digo: a menos que vocês comam a carne do Filho do Homem e bebam o seu sangue, não têm vida em si mesmos.
54
Quem come a minha carne e bebe o meu sangue tem a vida eterna, e eu o ressuscitarei no último dia.
55
Pois a minha carne é verdadeira comida, e o meu sangue é verdadeira bebida.
56
Quem come a minha carne e bebe o meu sangue permanece em mim, e eu nele.
57
Assim como o Pai, que vive, me enviou, e eu vivo por causa do Pai, assim aquele que se alimenta de mim também viverá por minha causa.
58
Este é o pão que desceu do céu — não como os pais de vocês que comeram o maná e morreram. Quem come este pão viverá para sempre.”
59
Ele disse estas coisas na sinagoga, enquanto ensinava em Cafarnaum.
60
Portanto, muitos dos seus discípulos, ao ouvirem isso, disseram: “Dura é esta palavra! Quem pode ouvi-la?”
61
Mas Jesus, sabendo em si mesmo que seus discípulos murmuravam a respeito disso, disse-lhes: “Isto os faz tropeçar?
62
E se vocês vissem o Filho do Homem subindo para onde estava antes?
63
É o espírito quem dá vida. A carne para nada aproveita. As palavras que eu lhes digo são espírito e são vida.
64
Mas há alguns de vocês que não creem.” Pois Jesus sabia desde o princípio quem eram os que não criam, e quem era aquele que o trairia.
65
Ele disse: “Por esta causa eu lhes disse que ninguém pode vir a mim, a menos que lhe seja concedido por meu Pai.”
66
A partir disso, muitos dos seus discípulos voltaram atrás e já não andavam com ele.
67
Jesus disse, pois, aos doze: “Vocês também não querem ir embora, querem?”
68
Simão Pedro lhe respondeu: “Senhor, para quem iremos nós? Tu tens as palavras de vida eterna.
69
Nós temos crido e conhecido que tu és o Cristo, o Filho do Deus vivo.”
70
Jesus lhes respondeu: “Não escolhi eu a vocês, os doze, e um de vocês é um diabo?”
71
Ora, ele falava de Judas, filho de Simão Iscariotes, pois era ele quem o trairia, sendo um dos doze.

After these things, Jesus went away to the other side of the sea of Galilee, which is also called the Sea of Tiberias.

A great multitude followed him, because they saw his signs which he did on those who were sick.
3
Jesus went up into the mountain, and he sat there with his disciples.
4
Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand.
5
Jesus therefore, lifting up his eyes and seeing that a great multitude was coming to him, said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, that these may eat?”
6
He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.
7
Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may receive a little.”
8
One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him,
9
“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these among so many?”
10
Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in that place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
11
Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to those who were sitting down, likewise also of the fish as much as they desired.
12
When they were filled, he said to his disciples, “Gather up the broken pieces which are left over, that nothing be lost.”
13
So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces from the five barley loaves, which were left over by those who had eaten.
14
When therefore the people saw the sign which Jesus did, they said, “This is truly the prophet who comes into the world.”
15
Jesus therefore, perceiving that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
16
When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea.
17
They entered into the boat, and were going over the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not come to them.
18
The sea was tossed by a great wind blowing.
19
When therefore they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the boat; and they were afraid.
20
But he said to them, “It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
21
They were willing therefore to receive him into the boat. Immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.
22
On the next day, the multitude that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except the one in which his disciples had embarked, and that Jesus hadn’t entered with his disciples into the boat, but his disciples had gone away alone.
23
However, boats from Tiberias came near to the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
24
When the multitude therefore saw that Jesus wasn’t there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
25
When they found him on the other side of the sea, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”
26
Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
27
Don’t work for the food which perishes, but for the food which remains to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For God the Father has sealed him.”
28
They said therefore to him, “What must we do, that we may work the works of God?”
29
Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
30
They said therefore to him, “What then do you do for a sign, that we may see and believe you? What work do you do?
31
Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness. As it is written, ‘He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.’”
32
Jesus therefore said to them, “Most certainly, I tell you, it wasn’t Moses who gave you the bread out of heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread out of heaven.
33
For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world.”
34
They said therefore to him, “Lord, always give us this bread.”
35
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will not be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
36
But I told you that you have seen me, and yet you don’t believe.
37
All those whom the Father gives me will come to me. He who comes to me I will in no way throw out.
38
For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.
39
This is the will of my Father who sent me, that of all he has given to me I should lose nothing, but should raise him up at the last day.
40
This is the will of the one who sent me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”
41
The Jews therefore murmured concerning him, because he said, “I am the bread which came down out of heaven.”
42
They said, “Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then does he say, ‘I have come down out of heaven’?”
43
Therefore Jesus answered them, “Don’t murmur among yourselves.
44
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him; and I will raise him up in the last day.
45
It is written in the prophets, ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who hears from the Father and has learned, comes to me.
46
Not that anyone has seen the Father, except he who is from God. He has seen the Father.
47
Most certainly, I tell you, he who believes in me has eternal life.
48
I am the bread of life.
49
Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and they died.
50
This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, that anyone may eat of it and not die.
51
I am the living bread which came down out of heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. Yes, the bread which I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
52
The Jews therefore contended with one another, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
53
Jesus therefore said to them, “Most certainly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you don’t have life in yourselves.
54
He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.
55
For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
56
He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I in him.
57
As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on me will also live because of me.
58
This is the bread which came down out of heaven—not as our fathers ate the manna and died. He who eats this bread will live forever.”
59
He said these things in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.
60
Therefore many of his disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a hard saying! Who can listen to it?”
61
But Jesus knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at this, said to them, “Does this cause you to stumble?
62
Then what if you would see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?
63
It is the spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life.
64
But there are some of you who don’t believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who didn’t believe, and who it was who would betray him.
65
He said, “For this cause I have said to you that no one can come to me, unless it is given to him by my Father.”
66
At this, many of his disciples went back and walked no more with him.
67
Jesus said therefore to the twelve, “You don’t also want to go away, do you?”
68
Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.
69
We have come to believe and know that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
70
Jesus answered them, “Didn’t I choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?”
71
Now he spoke of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, for it was he who would betray him, being one of the twelve.

De estômagos cheios a bancos vazios

O capítulo vai se estreitando. A grande multidão (v.2) se reduz aos que murmuram (v.41), depois a discípulos que chamam a palavra de dura (v.60), e enfim muitos "voltaram atrás" (v.66). Sobram só os doze, e ali Jesus aponta o traidor.

A resposta de Pedro, "a quem iríamos?", equilibra a saída da multidão: crer é permanecer, não ser alimentado.
