Um homem cego de nascença é curado quando Jesus faz lama com saliva e o manda lavar-se no tanque de Siloé. Por acontecer num sábado, a cura provoca um longo interrogatório em vez de festa. O curado é interrogado duas vezes, os pais se esquivam por medo da expulsão, e os fariseus endurecem enquanto suas respostas ficam mais ousadas. Repare como visão e cegueira saltam do físico ao espiritual.

Ao passar, ele viu um homem cego de nascença.

Seus discípulos lhe perguntaram: “Rabi, quem pecou: este homem ou seus pais, para que nascesse cego?”

Jesus respondeu: “Nem este homem pecou nem seus pais; mas isso aconteceu para que as obras de Deus se manifestassem nele.

É necessário que eu faça as obras daquele que me enviou enquanto é dia. A noite vem, quando ninguém pode trabalhar.

Enquanto estou no mundo, sou a luz do mundo.”

Tendo dito isso, ele cuspiu no chão, fez lodo com a saliva, ungiu os olhos do cego com o lodo,

e disse-lhe: “Vá, lave-se no tanque de Siloé” (que significa “Enviado”). Então ele foi, lavou-se e voltou vendo.

Portanto, os vizinhos e aqueles que antes o viam cego diziam: “Não é este aquele que ficava sentado mendigando?”

Uns diziam: “É ele.” Outros diziam: “Ele é parecido com ele.” Ele dizia: “Sou eu.”

Então lhe perguntavam: “Como os seus olhos foram abertos?”

Ele respondeu: “Um homem chamado Jesus fez lodo, ungiu os meus olhos e me disse: ‘Vá ao tanque de Siloé e lave-se.’ Então eu fui, lavei-me e recebi a visão.”

Então lhe perguntaram: “Onde ele está?” Ele disse: “Eu não sei.”

Levaram aos fariseus aquele que antes era cego.

Era sábado o dia em que Jesus fez o lodo e abriu os olhos dele.

Novamente, portanto, os fariseus também lhe perguntaram como ele havia recebido a visão. Ele lhes disse: “Ele colocou lodo sobre os meus olhos, eu me lavei e vejo.”

Por isso, alguns dos fariseus diziam: “Este homem não é de Deus, porque não guarda o sábado.” Outros diziam: “Como pode um homem pecador fazer tais sinais?” E havia divisão entre eles.

Portanto, perguntaram novamente ao cego: “O que você diz a respeito dele, já que ele abriu os seus olhos?” Ele disse: “Ele é um profeta.”

Os judeus, portanto, não acreditaram que ele tivesse sido cego e recebido a visão, até que chamaram os pais daquele que havia recebido a visão,

e lhes perguntaram: “É este o seu filho, o qual vocês dizem que nasceu cego? Como, então, ele agora vê?”

Seus pais lhes responderam: “Sabemos que este é o nosso filho e que nasceu cego;
- 21
mas como ele agora vê, não sabemos; ou quem abriu os seus olhos, nós não sabemos. Ele é maior de idade. Perguntem a ele. Ele falará por si mesmo.”

Seus pais disseram essas coisas porque temiam os judeus; pois os judeus já haviam concordado que, se alguém o confessasse como Cristo, seria expulso da sinagoga.

Por isso seus pais disseram: “Ele é maior de idade. Perguntem a ele.”

Então chamaram pela segunda vez o homem que fora cego, e lhe disseram: “Dê glória a Deus. Nós sabemos que este homem é pecador.”

Ele, portanto, respondeu: “Se ele é pecador, não sei. Uma coisa eu sei: eu era cego e agora vejo.”

Disseram-lhe novamente: “O que ele fez a você? Como ele abriu os seus olhos?”

Ele lhes respondeu: “Eu já lhes disse, e vocês não ouviram. Por que querem ouvir outra vez? Por acaso vocês também querem se tornar discípulos dele?”

Eles o insultaram e disseram: “Você é discípulo dele, mas nós somos discípulos de Moisés.

Sabemos que Deus falou a Moisés. Mas quanto a este homem, não sabemos de onde ele é.”

O homem lhes respondeu: “Que coisa impressionante! Vocês não sabem de onde ele é, e no entanto ele abriu os meus olhos.

Sabemos que Deus não ouve a pecadores, mas se alguém é adorador de Deus e faz a sua vontade, a esse ele ouve.

Desde o princípio do mundo, nunca se ouviu falar que alguém tenha aberto os olhos de um cego de nascença.

Se este homem não fosse de Deus, nada poderia fazer.”

Eles lhe responderam: “Você nasceu inteiramente em pecados, e quer nos ensinar?” Então o expulsaram.

Jesus ouviu que o haviam expulso e, ao encontrá-lo, disse: “Você crê no Filho de Deus?”

Ele respondeu: “Quem é ele, Senhor, para que eu creia nele?”

Jesus lhe disse: “Você já o viu, e é ele quem fala com você.”

Ele disse: “Senhor, eu creio!” E o adorou.

Jesus disse: “Eu vim a este mundo para juízo, a fim de que os que não veem vejam; e os que veem se tornem cegos.”

Aqueles dos fariseus que estavam com ele ouviram essas coisas e lhe disseram: “Por acaso nós também somos cegos?”

Jesus lhes disse: “Se vocês fossem cegos, não teriam pecado; mas agora vocês dizem: ‘Nós vemos’. Portanto, o pecado de vocês permanece.

His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

Jesus answered, “This man didn’t sin, nor did his parents, but that the works of God might be revealed in him.

I must work the works of him who sent me while it is day. The night is coming, when no one can work.

While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

When he had said this, he spat on the ground, made mud with the saliva, anointed the blind man’s eyes with the mud,

and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means “Sent”). So he went away, washed, and came back seeing.

Therefore the neighbors and those who saw that he was blind before said, “Isn’t this he who sat and begged?”
- 9
Others were saying, “It is he.” Still others were saying, “He looks like him.” He said, “I am he.”

They therefore were asking him, “How were your eyes opened?”
- 11
He answered, “A man called Jesus made mud, anointed my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.’ So I went away and washed, and I received sight.”

Then they asked him, “Where is he?” He said, “I don’t know.”

They brought him who had been blind to the Pharisees.
- 14
It was a Sabbath when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.

Again therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he received his sight. He said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, I washed, and I see.”
- 16
Some therefore of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, because he doesn’t keep the Sabbath.” Others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” So there was division among them.

Therefore they asked the blind man again, “What do you say about him, because he opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.”

The Jews therefore didn’t believe concerning him, that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight,

and asked them, “Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? How then does he now see?”
- 20
His parents answered them, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;
- 21
but how he now sees, we don’t know; or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. He is of age. Ask him. He will speak for himself.”

His parents said these things because they feared the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if any man would confess him as Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue.

Therefore his parents said, “He is of age. Ask him.”
- 24
So they called the man who was blind a second time, and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.”

He therefore answered, “I don’t know if he is a sinner. One thing I do know: that though I was blind, now I see.”
- 26
They said to him again, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
- 27
He answered them, “I told you already, and you didn’t listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You don’t also want to become his disciples, do you?”

They insulted him and said, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.
- 29
We know that God has spoken to Moses. But as for this man, we don’t know where he comes from.”

The man answered them, “How amazing! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes.

We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, he listens to him.
- 32
Since the world began it has never been heard of that anyone opened the eyes of someone born blind.
- 33
If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”
- 34
They answered him, “You were altogether born in sins, and do you teach us?” Then they threw him out.

Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and finding him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of God?”

He answered, “Who is he, Lord, that I may believe in him?”
- 37
Jesus said to him, “You have both seen him, and it is he who speaks with you.”

He said, “Lord, I believe!” and he worshiped him.
- 39
Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, that those who don’t see may see; and that those who see may become blind.”

Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and said to him, “Are we also blind?”

Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see.’ Therefore your sin remains.
A testemunha que enxerga cada vez mais
O homem passa de "um homem chamado Jesus" (v.11) a "é profeta" (v.17) e a "se este não fosse de Deus, nada poderia fazer" (v.33); só depois de ser expulso encontra Jesus e o adora. Sua clareza cresce enquanto a dos peritos afunda na negação.
A frase direta, "eu era cego e agora vejo" (v.25), é o eixo do capítulo: a experiência contra o argumento.
