Este foi o lote para a tribo de Manasseh, pois ele foi o primogênito de José. Quanto a Machir, o primogênito de Manasseh, o pai de Gilead, porque ele era um homem de guerra, portanto tinha Gilead e Bashan.

Assim foi para os demais filhos de Manassés, de acordo com suas famílias: para os filhos de Abiezer, para os filhos de Helek, para os filhos de Asriel, para os filhos de Shechem, para os filhos de Hepher, e para os filhos de Shemida. Estes eram os filhos masculinos de Manasseh, filho de José, de acordo com suas famílias.

Mas Zelophehad, o filho de Hepher, o filho de Gilead, o filho de Machir, o filho de Manasseh, não tinha filhos, mas filhas. Estes são os nomes de suas filhas: Mahlah, Noé, Hoglah, Milcah, e Tirzah.

Elas vieram a Eleazar, o sacerdote, e a Josué, filho de Freira, e aos príncipes, dizendo: “Javé ordenou a Moisés que nos desse uma herança entre nossos irmãos”. Portanto, segundo o mandamento de Javé, ele lhes deu uma herança entre os irmãos de seu pai.

Dez partes caíram para Manassés, além da terra de Gileade e Basã, que fica além do Jordão;

porque as filhas de Manassés tinham uma herança entre seus filhos. A terra de Gilead pertencia ao resto dos filhos de Manassés.

A fronteira de Manassés foi de Asher a Michmethath, que é antes de Shechem. A fronteira foi para a mão direita, para os habitantes de En Tappuah.

A terra de Tappuah pertencia a Manassés; mas Tappuah na fronteira de Manassés pertencia aos filhos de Efraim.

A fronteira desceu até o riacho de Kanah, na direção sul do riacho. Estas cidades pertenciam a Efraim, entre as cidades de Manasseh. A fronteira de Manasseh ficava no lado norte do riacho, e terminava no mar.

Para o sul era de Efraim, e para o norte era de Manasseh, e o mar era sua fronteira. Chegaram a Asher, ao norte, e a Issachar, ao leste.

Manasseh tinha três alturas em Issachar, em Asher Beth Shean e suas cidades, e Ibleam e suas cidades, e os habitantes de Dor e suas cidades, e os habitantes de Endor e suas cidades, e os habitantes de Taanach e suas cidades, e os habitantes de Megiddo e suas cidades.

No entanto, os filhos de Manasseh não poderiam expulsar os habitantes dessas cidades; mas os cananeus habitariam naquela terra.

Quando as crianças de Israel se tornaram fortes, eles colocaram os cananeus em trabalhos forçados, e não os expulsaram totalmente.

Os filhos de José falaram com Josué, dizendo: “Por que me deram apenas um lote e uma parte para uma herança, já que somos um povo numeroso, porque Yahweh nos abençoou até agora?

Josué lhes disse: “Se você é um povo numeroso, vá até a floresta e limpe a terra para si mesmo lá na terra dos Perizitas e dos Refaim, já que o país montanhoso de Efraim é muito estreito para você”.

As crianças de José disseram: “A região montanhosa não é suficiente para nós”. Todos os cananeus que habitam na terra do vale têm carruagens de ferro, tanto os que estão em Beth Shean e suas cidades, como os que estão no vale de Jezreel”.

Josué falou à casa de José, ou seja, a Efraim e a Manasseh, dizendo: “Vocês são um povo numeroso e têm um grande poder. Não tereis apenas um lote;

mas o país montanhoso será vosso. Embora seja uma floresta, você a cortará, e sua extensão será a mais distante; pois você expulsará os cananeus, embora eles tenham carruagens de ferro, e embora eles sejam fortes”.

This was the lot for the tribe of Manasseh, for he was the firstborn of Joseph. As for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, because he was a man of war, therefore he had Gilead and Bashan.

So this was for the rest of the children of Manasseh according to their families: for the children of Abiezer, for the children of Helek, for the children of Asriel, for the children of Shechem, for the children of Hepher, and for the children of Shemida. These were the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph according to their families.

But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters. These are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

They came to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the princes, saying, “The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers.” Therefore according to the commandment of the LORD he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father.

Ten parts fell to Manasseh, in addition to the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is beyond the Jordan;

because the daughters of Manasseh had an inheritance among his sons. The land of Gilead belonged to the rest of the sons of Manasseh.

The border of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethath, which is before Shechem. The border went along to the right hand, to the inhabitants of En Tappuah.

The land of Tappuah belonged to Manasseh; but Tappuah on the border of Manasseh belonged to the children of Ephraim.
- 9
The border went down to the brook of Kanah, southward of the brook. These cities belonged to Ephraim among the cities of Manasseh. The border of Manasseh was on the north side of the brook, and ended at the sea.

Southward it was Ephraim’s, and northward it was Manasseh’s, and the sea was his border. They reached to Asher on the north, and to Issachar on the east.

Manasseh had three heights in Issachar, in Asher Beth Shean and its towns, and Ibleam and its towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Endor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns.

Yet the children of Manasseh couldn’t drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

When the children of Israel had grown strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, and didn’t utterly drive them out.

The children of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, “Why have you given me just one lot and one part for an inheritance, since we are a numerous people, because the LORD has blessed us so far?”
- 15
Joshua said to them, “If you are a numerous people, go up to the forest, and clear land for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the Rephaim, since the hill country of Ephraim is too narrow for you.”

The children of Joseph said, “The hill country is not enough for us. All the Canaanites who dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both those who are in Beth Shean and its towns, and those who are in the valley of Jezreel.”

Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph, that is, to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, “You are a numerous people, and have great power. You shall not have one lot only;

but the hill country shall be yours. Although it is a forest, you shall cut it down, and it’s farthest extent shall be yours; for you shall drive out the Canaanites, though they have chariots of iron, and though they are strong.”
