Mateus 4

Recém-saído do batismo, o Espírito conduz Jesus ao deserto por quarenta dias, onde o diabo lhe apresenta três tentações: o pão, o pináculo do templo e os reinos do mundo. Jesus responde a cada uma com uma frase de Deuteronômio. A segunda metade vira para a Galileia: a mudança para Cafarnaum, a primeira pregação e o chamado de dois pares de irmãos pescadores.

Então Jesus foi levado pelo Espírito ao deserto, para ser tentado pelo diabo.

Depois de jejuar quarenta dias e quarenta noites, ele teve fome.

O tentador aproximou-se e lhe disse: “Se você é o Filho de Deus, mande que estas pedras se transformem em pão.”

Mas ele respondeu: “Está escrito: ‘Nem só de pão viverá o homem, mas de toda palavra que procede da boca de Deus.’”

Então o diabo o levou à cidade santa. Ele o colocou sobre o pináculo do templo,

e lhe disse: “Se você é o Filho de Deus, jogue-se daqui para baixo, pois está escrito: ‘Aos seus anjos ele dará ordens a seu respeito’, e, ‘Eles o sustentarão nas mãos, para que você não tropece em alguma pedra.’”

Jesus lhe disse: “Também está escrito: ‘Não ponha à prova o Senhor, o seu Deus.’”

Novamente, o diabo o levou a um monte altíssimo e lhe mostrou todos os reinos do mundo e a glória deles.

E lhe disse: “Tudo isso lhe darei, se você se prostrar e me adorar.”

Então Jesus lhe disse: “Para trás de mim, Satanás! Pois está escrito: ‘Adore ao Senhor, o seu Deus, e sirva somente a ele.’”

Então o diabo o deixou, e eis que anjos vieram e o serviram.

Quando Jesus ouviu que João tinha sido preso, retirou-se para a Galileia.

Deixando Nazaré, foi morar em Cafarnaum, que fica à beira-mar, na região de Zebulom e Naftali,
14
para que se cumprisse o que foi dito por meio do profeta Isaías, que diz:
15
“A terra de Zebulom e a terra de Naftali, caminho do mar, além do Jordão, Galileia dos gentios;
16
o povo que estava sentado nas trevas viu uma grande luz; e aos que estavam sentados na região e sombra da morte, a luz raiou para eles.”
17
Daquele tempo em diante, Jesus começou a pregar e a dizer: “Arrependam-se! Pois o Reino dos Céus está próximo.”
18
Andando à beira do mar da Galileia, ele viu dois irmãos: Simão, chamado Pedro, e André, seu irmão, lançando uma rede ao mar; pois eram pescadores.
19
Ele lhes disse: “Venham após mim, e eu farei de vocês pescadores de homens.”
20
Eles imediatamente deixaram suas redes e o seguiram.
21
Indo mais adiante, viu outros dois irmãos: Tiago, filho de Zebedeu, e João, seu irmão. Eles estavam no barco com seu pai, Zebedeu, consertando as redes. Ele os chamou.

Jesus percorria toda a Galileia, ensinando nas sinagogas deles, pregando as Boas Novas do Reino e curando todas as doenças e todas as enfermidades entre o povo.

As notícias a seu respeito se espalharam por toda a Síria. Trouxeram-lhe todos os que estavam doentes, afligidos por várias doenças e tormentos, endemoninhados, epilépticos e paralíticos; e ele os curou.
25
Grandes multidões da Galileia, de Decápolis, de Jerusalém, da Judeia e do outro lado do Jordão o seguiam.

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

When he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was hungry afterward.

The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of God’s mouth.’”

Then the devil took him into the holy city. He set him on the pinnacle of the temple,

and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and, ‘On their hands they will bear you up, so that you don’t dash your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus said to him, “Again, it is written, ‘You shall not test the Lord, your God.’”

Again, the devil took him to an exceedingly high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
9
He said to him, “I will give you all of these things, if you will fall down and worship me.”
10
Then Jesus said to him, “Get behind me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve him only.’”

Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and served him.

Now when Jesus heard that John was delivered up, he withdrew into Galilee.
13
Leaving Nazareth, he came and lived in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,
14
that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying,
15
“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles,
16
the people who sat in darkness saw a great light; to those who sat in the region and shadow of death, to them light has dawned.”
17
From that time, Jesus began to preach, and to say, “Repent! For the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”
18
Walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers: Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew, his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.
19
He said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers for men.”
20
They immediately left their nets and followed him.
21
Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them.
22

Jesus went about in all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.
24
The report about him went out into all Syria. They brought to him all who were sick, afflicted with various diseases and torments, possessed with demons, epileptics, and paralytics; and he healed them.
25
Great multitudes from Galilee, Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and from beyond the Jordan followed him.

Da prova ao recrutamento

O capítulo gira sobre uma só palavra que Jesus herda de João: arrependam-se, pois o Reino dos Céus está próximo (v. 17). Provada sua lealdade onde Israel falhou em seu próprio deserto, ele começa a reunir seguidores: Pedro e André, depois Tiago e João, que deixam redes, barco e pai de imediato (vv. 20, 22). A promessa de torná-los pescadores de homens transforma o ofício em chamado.
