Salmos 104
Um hino a Deus como criador e sustentador da criação, avançando quase na ordem de Gênesis 1: a luz como vestido, os céus estendidos, as águas com seu limite, as fontes e os animais, o sol e a lua que marcam o tempo. Cada criatura tem seu lugar e seu sustento diário. Repare como o salmo lê a criação como uma casa em funcionamento: os leões caçam de noite, o homem trabalha de dia, os navios e o leviatã dividem o mar.

Bendiga o SENHOR, ó minha alma. Ó SENHOR, meu Deus, tu és muito grande. Estás vestido de honra e majestade.

Ele se cobre de luz como de um manto. Ele estende os céus como uma cortina.

Ele põe as vigas dos seus aposentos nas águas. Ele faz das nuvens a sua carruagem. Ele anda sobre as asas do vento.

Ele faz dos seus mensageiros ventos, e dos seus servos, chamas de fogo.

Ele lançou os fundamentos da terra, para que jamais seja abalada.

Tu a cobriste com o abismo como com uma veste. As águas pararam acima das montanhas.

À tua repreensão, elas fugiram. À voz do teu trovão, elas se apressaram em fugir.

Os montes se ergueram, os vales afundaram, para o lugar que tu lhes designaste.

Tu estabeleceste um limite que elas não podem ultrapassar, para que não voltem a cobrir a terra.

Ele envia fontes para os vales. Elas correm entre os montes.

Elas dão de beber a todos os animais do campo. Os jumentos selvagens matam a sua sede.

As aves do céu aninham-se junto a elas. Elas cantam entre os ramos.

Ele rega os montes desde os seus aposentos. A terra se farta com o fruto das tuas obras.

Ele faz crescer a relva para o gado, e as plantas para o homem cultivar, para que produza alimento da terra:

o vinho que alegra o coração do homem, o azeite para fazer seu rosto brilhar, e o pão que fortalece o coração do homem.

As árvores do SENHOR são bem regadas, os cedros do Líbano, que ele plantou,

onde as aves fazem os seus ninhos. A cegonha faz a sua morada nos ciprestes.

As altas montanhas são para as cabras selvagens. As rochas são um refúgio para os arganazes.

Ele designou a lua para as estações. O sol sabe quando se pôr.
- 20
Tu trazes as trevas, e faz-se noite, na qual todos os animais da floresta rondam.

Os leõezinhos rugem atrás de sua presa, e buscam de Deus o seu alimento.

O sol nasce, e eles se retiram furtivamente, e se deitam em seus covis.

O homem sai para a sua obra, para o seu trabalho até a tarde.

SENHOR, quão numerosas são as tuas obras! Com sabedoria, tu fizeste todas elas. A terra está cheia das tuas riquezas.

Eis o mar, grande e vasto, no qual há inumeráveis seres vivos, animais tanto pequenos quanto grandes.

Ali navegam os navios, e o leviatã, que tu formaste para ali brincar.

Todos estes esperam em ti, para que lhes dês o seu alimento no tempo certo.

Tu lhes dás; eles o recolhem. Tu abres a tua mão; eles se fartam de bens.
- 29
Tu escondes o teu rosto; eles ficam perturbados. Tu retiras o fôlego deles; eles morrem e voltam ao pó.

Tu envias o teu Espírito e eles são criados. Tu renovas a face da terra.

Que a glória do SENHOR dure para sempre. Que o SENHOR se alegre em suas obras.

Ele olha para a terra, e ela treme. Ele toca nos montes, e eles fumegam.

Cantarei ao SENHOR enquanto eu viver. Cantarei louvores ao meu Deus enquanto eu existir.

Que a minha meditação lhe seja agradável. Eu me alegrarei no SENHOR.

Que os pecadores sejam consumidos da terra. Que os ímpios não existam mais. Bendiga o SENHOR, ó minha alma. Louvem o SENHOR!

Bless the LORD, my soul. The LORD, my God, you are very great. You are clothed with honor and majesty.

He covers himself with light as with a garment. He stretches out the heavens like a curtain.

He lays the beams of his rooms in the waters. He makes the clouds his chariot. He walks on the wings of the wind.

He makes his messengers winds, and his servants flames of fire.

He laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be moved forever.

You covered it with the deep as with a cloak. The waters stood above the mountains.

At your rebuke they fled. At the voice of your thunder they hurried away.

The mountains rose, the valleys sank down, to the place which you had assigned to them.

You have set a boundary that they may not pass over, that they don’t turn again to cover the earth.

He sends springs into the valleys. They run among the mountains.

They give drink to every animal of the field. The wild donkeys quench their thirst.

The birds of the sky nest by them. They sing among the branches.
- 13
He waters the mountains from his rooms. The earth is filled with the fruit of your works.

He causes the grass to grow for the livestock, and plants for man to cultivate, that he may produce food out of the earth:

wine that makes the heart of man glad, oil to make his face to shine, and bread that strengthens man’s heart.

The LORD’s trees are well watered, the cedars of Lebanon, which he has planted,

where the birds make their nests. The stork makes its home in the cypress trees.

The high mountains are for the wild goats. The rocks are a refuge for the rock badgers.
- 19
He appointed the moon for seasons. The sun knows when to set.
- 20
You make darkness, and it is night, in which all the animals of the forest prowl.
- 21
The young lions roar after their prey, and seek their food from God.
- 22
The sun rises, and they steal away, and lie down in their dens.
- 23
Man goes out to his work, to his labor until the evening.
- 24
LORD, how many are your works! In wisdom, you have made them all. The earth is full of your riches.
- 25
There is the sea, great and wide, in which are innumerable living things, both small and large animals.
- 26
There the ships go, and leviathan, whom you formed to play there.
- 27
These all wait for you, that you may give them their food in due season.
- 28
You give to them; they gather. You open your hand; they are satisfied with good.
- 29
You hide your face; they are troubled. You take away their breath; they die and return to the dust.
- 30
You send out your Spirit and they are created. You renew the face of the ground.
- 31
Let the LORD’s glory endure forever. Let the LORD rejoice in his works.
- 32
He looks at the earth, and it trembles. He touches the mountains, and they smoke.
- 33
I will sing to the LORD as long as I live. I will sing praise to my God while I have any being.
- 34
Let my meditation be sweet to him. I will rejoice in the LORD.
- 35
Let sinners be consumed out of the earth. Let the wicked be no more. Bless the LORD, my soul. Praise the LORD!
O sustento na mão aberta
Os vv. 27-30 são o motor do poema: toda criatura espera seu alimento a seu tempo, e quando Deus esconde o rosto elas se perturbam, perdem o fôlego e voltam ao pó. A vida é emprestada, fôlego após fôlego.
O mesmo Espírito que tira o fôlego renova a face da terra (v. 30): o mundo que segue é um ato contínuo de dar, não uma máquina deixada funcionando sozinha.
