Salmos 72
Uma oração para a coroação do rei: que ele julgue o povo com justiça, defenda o pobre e esmague o opressor. O desejo se expande para fora — domínio "de mar a mar", tributo de Társis, Sabá e Seba, todas as nações o servindo — e no tempo, seu nome durando "enquanto durar o sol". O salmo encerra o segundo livro do Saltério; o versículo 20 anota: "Aqui terminam as orações de Davi, filho de Jessé".

Ó Deus, dê ao rei a sua justiça; a sua retidão ao filho do rei.

Ele julgará o seu povo com retidão, e os seus pobres com justiça.

Os montes trarão prosperidade ao povo. As colinas trarão o fruto da retidão.

Ele julgará os pobres do povo. Ele salvará os filhos dos necessitados, e despedaçará o opressor.

Eles o temerão enquanto o sol durar; e enquanto a lua existir, por todas as gerações.

Ele descerá como chuva sobre a relva ceifada, como aguaceiros que regam a terra.

Em seus dias, o justo florescerá, e haverá abundância de paz, até que a lua já não exista.

Ele terá domínio também de mar a mar, desde o Rio até os confins da terra.

Aqueles que habitam no deserto se curvarão diante dele. Seus inimigos lamberão o pó.

Os reis de Társis e das ilhas trarão tributos. Os reis de Sabá e de Sebá oferecerão presentes.

Sim, todos os reis se prostrarão diante dele. Todas as nações o servirão.

Pois ele livrará o necessitado quando clamar; e o pobre, que não tem quem o ajude.

Ele terá compaixão do pobre e do necessitado. Ele salvará as almas dos necessitados.

Ele redimirá a alma deles da opressão e da violência. O sangue deles será precioso aos seus olhos.

Ele viverá; e o ouro de Sabá lhe será dado. Os homens orarão por ele continuamente. Eles o abençoarão o dia todo.

Haverá abundância de grãos por toda a terra. Seus frutos ondularão como o Líbano. Que ela floresça, prosperando como a grama do campo.

O seu nome durará para sempre. O seu nome continuará enquanto o sol existir. Os homens serão abençoados por ele. Todas as nações o chamarão de bem-aventurado.

Louvado seja o SENHOR Deus, o Deus de Israel, o único que faz maravilhas.

They shall fear you while the sun endures; and as long as the moon, throughout all generations.

He will come down like rain on the mown grass, as showers that water the earth.

In his days, the righteous shall flourish, and abundance of peace, until the moon is no more.

He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, from the River to the ends of the earth.

Those who dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him. His enemies shall lick the dust.

The kings of Tarshish and of the islands will bring tribute. The kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.

Yes, all kings shall fall down before him. All nations shall serve him.

For he will deliver the needy when he cries; the poor, who has no helper.
- 13
He will have pity on the poor and needy. He will save the souls of the needy.
- 14
He will redeem their soul from oppression and violence. Their blood will be precious in his sight.
- 15
He will live; and Sheba’s gold will be given to him. Men will pray for him continually. They will bless him all day long.

Abundance of grain shall be throughout the land. Its fruit sways like Lebanon. Let it flourish, thriving like the grass of the field.

His name endures forever. His name continues as long as the sun. Men shall be blessed by him. All nations will call him blessed.

Praise be to the LORD God, the God of Israel, who alone does marvelous deeds.
- 19
Blessed be his glorious name forever! Let the whole earth be filled with his glory! Amen and amen.

O poder medido por quem ele protege
A grandiosa linguagem imperial fica ancorada num teste concreto. O rei merece o domínio porque "livrará ao necessitado quando clamar, e ao aflito que não tem quem o socorra" (v.12), redimindo suas vidas da opressão e da violência, de modo que "o sangue deles será precioso aos seus olhos" (v.14). O reinado mundial se justifica pelo cuidado com o indefeso.
