Sigam o amor e desejem ardentemente os dons espirituais, mas especialmente que profetizem.
- 2
Pois aquele que fala em outra língua não fala aos homens, mas a Deus, pois ninguém o entende; mas no Espírito ele fala mistérios.
- 3
Mas aquele que profetiza fala aos homens para a edificação, exortação e consolação deles.
- 4
Aquele que fala em outra língua edifica a si mesmo, mas aquele que profetiza edifica a igreja.

Agora, eu desejo que todos vocês falem em outras línguas, mas ainda mais que profetizem. Pois maior é o que profetiza do que o que fala em outras línguas, a menos que ele interprete, para que a igreja seja edificada.

Mas agora, irmãos, se eu for até vocês falando em outras línguas, de que lhes serei útil, a não ser que lhes fale por meio de revelação, ou de conhecimento, ou de profecia, ou de ensino?

Até mesmo as coisas inanimadas que produzem som, seja a flauta ou a harpa, se não emitirem sons distintos, como se saberá o que é tocado na flauta ou na harpa?
- 8
Pois, se a trombeta emitir um som incerto, quem se preparará para a guerra?
- 9
Assim também vocês, a menos que pronunciem com a língua palavras fáceis de entender, como se saberá o que está sendo dito? Pois vocês estarão falando ao ar.

Há, sem dúvida, muitos tipos de idiomas no mundo, e nenhum deles é sem sentido.
- 11
Se, portanto, eu não souber o significado do idioma, serei um estrangeiro para aquele que fala, e aquele que fala será um estrangeiro para mim.

Assim também vocês, visto que têm zelo pelos dons espirituais, busquem ser abundantes neles para a edificação da igreja.
- 13
Portanto, aquele que fala em outra língua, ore para que a possa interpretar.
- 14
Pois, se eu orar em outra língua, meu espírito ora, mas o meu entendimento fica infrutífero.
- 15
O que devo fazer então? Orarei com o espírito, mas também orarei com o entendimento. Cantarei com o espírito, mas também cantarei com o entendimento.

Do contrário, se você abençoar com o espírito, como aquele que ocupa o lugar de um não instruído dirá o “Amém” à sua ação de graças, visto que ele não sabe o que você está dizendo?

Pois você, com certeza, dá graças muito bem, mas a outra pessoa não é edificada.
- 18
Dou graças ao meu Deus porque falo em outras línguas mais do que todos vocês.
- 19
No entanto, na igreja, prefiro falar cinco palavras com o meu entendimento, para que eu possa instruir também os outros, do que dez mil palavras em outra língua.
- 20
Irmãos, não sejam crianças no entendimento; contudo, na malícia sejam bebês, mas no entendimento sejam maduros.
- 21
Na lei está escrito: “Por homens de línguas estranhas e pelos lábios de estrangeiros falarei a este povo. E nem mesmo assim eles me ouvirão, diz o Senhor.”

Portanto, as outras línguas são um sinal, não para os que creem, mas para os incrédulos; a profecia, porém, é um sinal, não para os incrédulos, mas para os que creem.

Se, portanto, toda a igreja se reunir e todos falarem em outras línguas, e entrarem pessoas não instruídas ou incrédulas, eles não dirão que vocês estão loucos?
- 24
Mas, se todos profetizarem, e entrar algum incrédulo ou não instruído, ele é convencido por todos, e por todos é julgado.

E assim os segredos do seu coração são revelados. Então ele se prostrará com o rosto em terra e adorará a Deus, declarando que Deus está de fato entre vocês.

Que faremos então, irmãos? Quando vocês se reúnem, cada um de vocês tem um salmo, tem um ensino, tem uma revelação, tem outra língua, ou tem uma interpretação. Que todas as coisas sejam feitas para a edificação mútua.

Se alguém falar em outra língua, que sejam dois, ou no máximo três, e cada um por sua vez; e que um interprete.

Mas, se não houver intérprete, que ele fique calado na igreja, e fale consigo mesmo e com Deus.

Que falem dois ou três profetas, e que os outros discernam.
- 30
Mas, se for dada uma revelação a outro que está sentado, que o primeiro se cale.
- 31
Pois todos vocês podem profetizar, um por um, para que todos aprendam e todos sejam exortados.
- 32
Os espíritos dos profetas estão sujeitos aos profetas,
- 33
pois Deus não é Deus de confusão, mas de paz, como em todas as igrejas dos santos.

Que as esposas fiquem caladas nas igrejas, pois não lhes foi permitido falar, a não ser em submissão, como também diz a lei,
- 35
se elas desejarem aprender alguma coisa. “Que perguntem a seus próprios maridos em casa, pois é vergonhoso para uma esposa falar na igreja.”

O quê!? Foi de vocês que a palavra de Deus saiu? Ou ela chegou apenas a vocês?
- 37
Se alguém se considera profeta ou espiritual, reconheça que as coisas que lhes escrevo são mandamento do Senhor.
- 38
Mas, se alguém ignora isso, que continue ignorante.
- 39
Portanto, irmãos, desejem ardentemente profetizar, e não proíbam o falar em outras línguas.
- 40
Que todas as coisas sejam feitas com decência e ordem.

Follow after love and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

For he who speaks in another language speaks not to men, but to God, for no one understands, but in the Spirit he speaks mysteries.

But he who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, exhortation, and consolation.
- 4
He who speaks in another language edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the assembly.
- 5
Now I desire to have you all speak with other languages, but even more that you would prophesy. For he is greater who prophesies than he who speaks with other languages, unless he interprets, that the assembly may be built up.

But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking with other languages, what would I profit you unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching?

Even lifeless things that make a sound, whether pipe or harp, if they didn’t give a distinction in the sounds, how would it be known what is piped or harped?
- 8
For if the trumpet gave an uncertain sound, who would prepare himself for war?
- 9
So also you, unless you uttered by the tongue words easy to understand, how would it be known what is spoken? For you would be speaking into the air.
- 10
There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and none of them is without meaning.
- 11
If then I don’t know the meaning of the language, I would be to him who speaks a foreigner, and he who speaks would be a foreigner to me.
- 12
So also you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, seek that you may abound to the building up of the assembly.

Therefore let him who speaks in another language pray that he may interpret.
- 14
For if I pray in another language, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.
- 15
What should I do? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also. I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
- 16
Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who fills the place of the unlearned say the “Amen” at your giving of thanks, seeing he doesn’t know what you say?

For you most certainly give thanks well, but the other person is not built up.
- 18
I thank my God, I speak with other languages more than you all.
- 19
However, in the assembly I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in another language.
- 20
Brothers, don’t be children in thoughts, yet in malice be babies, but in thoughts be mature.
- 21
In the law it is written, “By men of strange languages and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people. They won’t even listen to me that way, says the Lord.”
- 22
Therefore other languages are for a sign, not to those who believe, but to the unbelieving; but prophesying is for a sign, not to the unbelieving, but to those who believe.
- 23
If therefore the whole assembly is assembled together and all speak with other languages, and unlearned or unbelieving people come in, won’t they say that you are crazy?
- 24
But if all prophesy, and someone unbelieving or unlearned comes in, he is reproved by all, and he is judged by all.
- 25
And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed. So he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed.
- 26
What is it then, brothers? When you come together, each one of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has another language, or has an interpretation. Let all things be done to build each other up.
- 27
If any man speaks in another language, let there be two, or at the most three, and in turn; and let one interpret.
- 28
But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in the assembly, and let him speak to himself and to God.
- 29
Let two or three of the prophets speak, and let the others discern.
- 30
But if a revelation is made to another sitting by, let the first keep silent.
- 31
For you all can prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be exhorted.
- 32
The spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets,
- 33
for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the assemblies of the saints.
- 34
Let the wives be quiet in the assemblies, for it has not been permitted for them to be talking except in submission, as the law also says,
- 35
if they desire to learn anything. “Let them ask their own husbands at home, for it is shameful for a wife to be talking in the assembly.”
- 36
What!? Was it from you that the word of God went out? Or did it come to you alone?
- 37
If any man thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize the things which I write to you, that they are the commandment of the Lord.
- 38
But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant.
- 39
Therefore, brothers, desire earnestly to prophesy, and don’t forbid speaking with other languages.
- 40
Let all things be done decently and in order.
