Depois destas coisas e desta fidelidade, Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, veio, entrou em Judá, acampou contra as cidades fortificadas e teve a intenção de conquistá-las para si.

Quando Ezequias viu que Senaqueribe tinha vindo, e que ele planejava lutar contra Jerusalém,
- 3
ele se aconselhou com seus príncipes e seus homens valentes para tapar as águas das fontes que ficavam fora da cidade, e eles o ajudaram.
- 4
Então muitas pessoas se reuniram e taparam todas as fontes e o ribeiro que fluía pelo meio da terra, dizendo: “Por que os reis da Assíria deveriam vir e encontrar água abundante?”

Ele tomou coragem, reconstruiu todo o muro que estava derrubado, e o ergueu até as torres, com o outro muro do lado de fora, e fortaleceu Milo na cidade de Davi, e fez armas e escudos em abundância.

Ele colocou capitães de guerra sobre o povo, reuniu-os a si na praça junto à porta da cidade, e falou-lhes de forma encorajadora, dizendo:

“Sejam fortes e corajosos. Não tenham medo nem se assustem por causa do rei da Assíria, nem por toda a multidão que está com ele; pois há um maior conosco do que com ele.
- 8
Com ele está um braço de carne, mas o SENHOR nosso Deus está conosco para nos ajudar e para lutar as nossas batalhas.” O povo descansou nas palavras de Ezequias, rei de Judá.

Depois disso, Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, enviou seus servos a Jerusalém (ele estava atacando Laquis, e todas as suas forças estavam com ele), a Ezequias, rei de Judá, e a todo o Judá que estava em Jerusalém, dizendo:

Assim diz Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria: “Em quem vocês confiam, para que permaneçam sob cerco em Jerusalém?

Acaso Ezequias não os persuade a se entregarem para morrer de fome e de sede, dizendo: ‘O SENHOR nosso Deus nos livrará da mão do rei da Assíria’?
- 12
Acaso o mesmo Ezequias não removeu os seus altos e os seus altares, e ordenou a Judá e a Jerusalém, dizendo: ‘Vocês adorarão diante de um só altar, e sobre ele queimarão incenso’?
- 13
Vocês não sabem o que eu e meus pais fizemos a todos os povos das terras? Acaso os deuses das nações daquelas terras foram de alguma forma capazes de livrar a sua terra da minha mão?
- 14
Quem houve entre todos os deuses daquelas nações que meus pais destruíram totalmente que pudesse livrar o seu povo da minha mão, para que o Deus de vocês seja capaz de livrá-los da minha mão?
- 15
Agora, portanto, não deixem Ezequias enganá-los nem persuadi-los desta maneira. Não acreditem nele, pois nenhum deus de qualquer nação ou reino foi capaz de livrar o seu povo da minha mão, e da mão de meus pais. Quanto menos o Deus de vocês os livrará da minha mão?”

Seus servos falaram ainda mais contra o SENHOR Deus e contra o seu servo Ezequias.
- 17
Ele também escreveu cartas insultando o SENHOR, o Deus de Israel, e falando contra ele, dizendo: “Assim como os deuses das nações das terras, que não livraram o seu povo da minha mão, também o Deus de Ezequias não livrará o seu povo da minha mão.”

Eles gritaram em alta voz na língua dos judeus para o povo de Jerusalém que estava sobre o muro, para assustá-los e perturbá-los, a fim de que pudessem tomar a cidade.

Eles falaram do Deus de Jerusalém como dos deuses dos povos da terra, que são obra das mãos dos homens.
- 20
O rei Ezequias e o profeta Isaías, filho de Amoz, oraram por causa disso, e clamaram aos céus.

O SENHOR enviou um anjo, que exterminou todos os homens valentes, os líderes e os capitães no acampamento do rei da Assíria. Então ele voltou com o rosto envergonhado para a sua própria terra. Quando ele entrou na casa de seu deus, aqueles que saíram do seu próprio corpo o mataram ali à espada.

Assim o SENHOR salvou Ezequias e os habitantes de Jerusalém da mão de Senaqueribe, o rei da Assíria, e da mão de todos os outros, e os guiou por todos os lados.

Muitos trouxeram presentes ao SENHOR em Jerusalém, e coisas preciosas a Ezequias, rei de Judá, de modo que ele foi exaltado à vista de todas as nações a partir de então.

Naqueles dias Ezequias ficou mortalmente doente, e ele orou ao SENHOR; e ele lhe falou, e lhe deu um sinal.
- 25
Mas Ezequias não correspondeu de forma apropriada ao benefício que lhe foi feito, porque o seu coração se exaltou. Portanto, houve ira sobre ele, sobre Judá e sobre Jerusalém.

No entanto, Ezequias se humilhou pelo orgulho do seu coração, tanto ele quanto os habitantes de Jerusalém, de modo que a ira do SENHOR não veio sobre eles nos dias de Ezequias.

Ezequias teve riquezas e honra muitíssimo grandes. Ele providenciou para si tesourarias para prata, para ouro, para pedras preciosas, para especiarias, para escudos e para todos os tipos de utensílios valiosos;
- 28
também armazéns para a colheita de cereais, vinho novo e azeite; e estábulos para todos os tipos de animais, e rebanhos em apriscos.
- 29
Além disso, ele providenciou para si cidades, e posses de rebanhos e gado em abundância; pois Deus lhe tinha dado posses abundantes.
- 30
Este mesmo Ezequias também tapou a fonte superior das águas de Giom, e as trouxe diretamente para o lado oeste da cidade de Davi. Ezequias prosperou em todas as suas obras.
- 31
No entanto, com respeito aos embaixadores dos príncipes da Babilônia, que enviaram a ele para inquirir sobre a maravilha que se fez na terra, Deus o deixou para testá-lo, para que pudesse conhecer tudo o que estava em seu coração.

Ora, o restante dos atos de Ezequias e as suas boas obras, eis que estão escritos na visão do profeta Isaías, filho de Amoz, no livro dos reis de Judá e de Israel.

Ezequias descansou com seus pais, e eles o sepultaram na subida para os túmulos dos filhos de Davi. Todo o Judá e os habitantes de Jerusalém o honraram em sua morte. Manassés, seu filho, reinou em seu lugar.

After these things and this faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came, entered into Judah, encamped against the fortified cities, and intended to win them for himself.

When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come, and that he was planning to fight against Jerusalem,
- 3
he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the springs which were outside of the city, and they helped him.
- 4
Then many people gathered together and they stopped all the springs and the brook that flowed through the middle of the land, saying, “Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find abundant water?”
- 5
He took courage, built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised it up to the towers, with the other wall outside, and strengthened Millo in David’s city, and made weapons and shields in abundance.

He set captains of war over the people, gathered them together to him in the wide place at the gate of the city, and spoke encouragingly to them, saying,
- 7
“Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or dismayed because of the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude who is with him; for there is a greater one with us than with him.
- 8
An arm of flesh is with him, but the LORD our God is with us to help us and to fight our battles.” The people rested themselves on the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

After this, Sennacherib king of Assyria sent his servants to Jerusalem, (now he was attacking Lachish, and all his forces were with him), to Hezekiah king of Judah, and to all Judah who were at Jerusalem, saying,

Sennacherib king of Assyria says, “In whom do you trust, that you remain under siege in Jerusalem?
- 11
Doesn’t Hezekiah persuade you to give you over to die by famine and by thirst, saying, ‘The LORD our God will deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria’?
- 12
Hasn’t the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, ‘You shall worship before one altar, and you shall burn incense on it’?
- 13
Don’t you know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Were the gods of the nations of those lands in any way able to deliver their land out of my hand?
- 14
Who was there among all the gods of those nations which my fathers utterly destroyed that could deliver his people out of my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of my hand?
- 15
Now therefore don’t let Hezekiah deceive you nor persuade you in this way. Don’t believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hand, and out of the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you out of my hand?”

His servants spoke yet more against the LORD God and against his servant Hezekiah.

He also wrote letters insulting the LORD, the God of Israel, and speaking against him, saying, “As the gods of the nations of the lands, which have not delivered their people out of my hand, so shall the God of Hezekiah not deliver his people out of my hand.”

They called out with a loud voice in the Jews’ language to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to frighten them and to trouble them, that they might take the city.
- 19
They spoke of the God of Jerusalem as of the gods of the peoples of the earth, which are the work of men’s hands.
- 20
Hezekiah the king and Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, prayed because of this, and cried to heaven.

The LORD sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty men of valor, the leaders, and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. When he had come into the house of his god, those who came out of his own body killed him there with the sword.

Thus the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria and from the hand of all others, and guided them on every side.
- 23
Many brought gifts to the LORD to Jerusalem, and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah, so that he was exalted in the sight of all nations from then on.

In those days Hezekiah was terminally ill, and he prayed to the LORD; and he spoke to him, and gave him a sign.
- 25
But Hezekiah didn’t reciprocate appropriate to the benefit done for him, because his heart was lifted up. Therefore there was wrath on him, Judah, and Jerusalem.
- 26
However, Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the LORD’s wrath didn’t come on them in the days of Hezekiah.

Hezekiah had exceedingly great riches and honor. He provided himself with treasuries for silver, for gold, for precious stones, for spices, for shields, and for all kinds of valuable vessels;
- 28
also storehouses for the increase of grain, new wine, and oil; and stalls for all kinds of animals, and flocks in folds.
- 29
Moreover he provided for himself cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance; for God had given him abundant possessions.
- 30
This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper spring of the waters of Gihon, and brought them straight down on the west side of David’s city. Hezekiah prospered in all his works.

However, concerning the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent to him to inquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him to test him, that he might know all that was in his heart.
- 32
Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah and his good deeds, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.

Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the ascent to the tombs of the sons of David. All Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem honored him at his death. Manasseh his son reigned in his place.
