Gênesis 14
Uma guerra internacional irrompe na história da família. Quatro reis do oriente, sob Quedorlaomer, esmagam uma coligação de cinco reis junto ao Mar Salgado, saqueiam Sodoma e Gomorra e levam Ló entre os cativos. Abrão, aqui chamado "o hebreu," arma 318 homens treinados, persegue até Dã e para além de Damasco, e recupera todos e tudo. No regresso, dois reis vêm ao seu encontro com ofertas opostas.

Nos dias de Anrafel, rei de Sinar; Arioque, rei de Elasar; Quedorlaomer, rei de Elão; e Tidal, rei de Goim,

eles fizeram guerra contra Bera, rei de Sodoma; Birsa, rei de Gomorra; Sinabe, rei de Admá; Semeber, rei de Zeboim; e o rei de Belá (também chamada Zoar).

Todos estes se juntaram no vale de Sidim (também chamado de Mar Salgado).

Eles serviram a Quedorlaomer por doze anos, e no décimo terceiro ano se rebelaram.

No décimo quarto ano, Quedorlaomer e os reis que estavam com ele vieram e derrotaram os refains em Asterote-Carnaim, os zuzins em Hã, os emins em Savé-Quiriataim,

e os horeus em seu monte Seir, até El-Parã, que fica junto ao deserto.

Eles voltaram e chegaram a En-Mispate (também chamada Cades), e derrotaram todo o território dos amalequitas, e também os amorreus, que habitavam em Hazazom-Tamar.

O rei de Sodoma, o rei de Gomorra, o rei de Admá, o rei de Zeboim e o rei de Belá (também chamada Zoar) saíram; e se colocaram em ordem de batalha contra eles no vale de Sidim,

contra Quedorlaomer, rei de Elão, Tidal, rei de Goim, Anrafel, rei de Sinar, e Arioque, rei de Elasar; quatro reis contra cinco.

Ora, o vale de Sidim era cheio de poços de betume; e os reis de Sodoma e de Gomorra fugiram, e alguns caíram ali. Os que restaram fugiram para os montes.

Eles tomaram todos os bens de Sodoma e de Gomorra, e todos os seus mantimentos, e seguiram o seu caminho.

Tomaram também a Ló, filho do irmão de Abrão, que morava em Sodoma, e os seus bens, e partiram.
- 13
Um dos que haviam escapado veio e contou a Abrão, o hebreu. Naquele tempo, ele habitava junto aos carvalhos de Manre, o amorreu, irmão de Escol e irmão de Aner. Eles eram aliados de Abrão.

Quando Abrão ouviu que seu parente fora levado cativo, ele reuniu os seus trezentos e dezoito homens treinados, nascidos em sua casa, e os perseguiu até Dã.

Ele dividiu as suas forças contra eles de noite, ele e os seus servos, e os derrotou, e os perseguiu até Hobá, que fica ao norte de Damasco.

Ele trouxe de volta todos os bens, e também trouxe de volta seu parente Ló e os seus bens, bem como as mulheres e o restante do povo.

O rei de Sodoma saiu ao seu encontro após o seu retorno da derrota de Quedorlaomer e dos reis que estavam com ele, no vale de Savé (que é o Vale do Rei).

Melquisedeque, rei de Salém, trouxe pão e vinho. Ele era sacerdote do Deus Altíssimo.
- 19
Ele o abençoou, e disse: “Bendito seja Abrão pelo Deus Altíssimo, Possuidor dos céus e da terra.
- 20
Bendito seja o Deus Altíssimo, que entregou os seus inimigos em suas mãos.” Abrão lhe deu o dízimo de tudo.

O rei de Sodoma disse a Abrão: “Dê-me as pessoas, e tome os bens para você.”

Abrão disse ao rei de Sodoma: “Levantei a minha mão ao SENHOR, o Deus Altíssimo, Possuidor dos céus e da terra,
- 23
de que não tomarei um fio, nem uma correia de sandália, nem qualquer coisa que seja sua, para que você não diga: 'Eu enriqueci a Abrão.'
- 24
Não aceitarei nada de você, exceto o que os jovens comeram, e a porção dos homens que foram comigo: Aner, Escol e Manre. Que eles tomem a sua porção.”

In the days of Amraphel, king of Shinar; Arioch, king of Ellasar; Chedorlaomer, king of Elam; and Tidal, king of Goiim,
- 2
they made war with Bera, king of Sodom; Birsha, king of Gomorrah; Shinab, king of Admah; Shemeber, king of Zeboiim; and the king of Bela (also called Zoar).

All these joined together in the valley of Siddim (also called the Salt Sea).

They served Chedorlaomer for twelve years, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him came and struck the Rephaim in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham, the Emim in Shaveh Kiriathaim,
- 6
and the Horites in their Mount Seir, to El Paran, which is by the wilderness.
- 7
They returned, and came to En Mishpat (also called Kadesh), and struck all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that lived in Hazazon Tamar.

The king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (also called Zoar) went out; and they set the battle in array against them in the valley of Siddim

against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goiim, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings against the five.

Now the valley of Siddim was full of tar pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and some fell there. Those who remained fled to the hills.

They took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their food, and went their way.
- 12
They took Lot, Abram’s brother’s son, who lived in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.
- 13
One who had escaped came and told Abram, the Hebrew. At that time, he lived by the oaks of Mamre, the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner. They were allies of Abram.

When Abram heard that his relative was taken captive, he led out his three hundred eighteen trained men, born in his house, and pursued as far as Dan.
- 15
He divided himself against them by night, he and his servants, and struck them, and pursued them to Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.
- 16
He brought back all the goods, and also brought back his relative Lot and his goods, and the women also, and the other people.
- 17
The king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, at the valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).
- 18
Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High.
- 19
He blessed him, and said, “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth.
- 20
Blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” Abram gave him a tenth of all.
- 21
The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people, and take the goods for yourself.”

Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted up my hand to the LORD, God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth,
- 23
that I will not take a thread nor a sandal strap nor anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’
- 24
I will accept nothing from you except that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men who went with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre. Let them take their portion.”
Dois reis, duas respostas
Melquisedeque, rei de Salém e "sacerdote do Deus Altíssimo," traz pão e vinho e abençoa-o; Abrão dá-lhe o dízimo de tudo (v.20). Este rei-sacerdote sem genealogia há de ecoar muito para lá deste capítulo.
O rei de Sodoma oferece-lhe os bens em troca das pessoas. Abrão recusa até "um fio, nem uma correia de sandália," para que ninguém possa dizer que o enriqueceu. O guerreiro que podia ficar com o despojo presta contas a um possuidor maior do céu e da terra.
