Gênesis 46
Israel parte para o Egito e detém-se em Berseba a oferecer sacrifícios. Ali Deus fala-lhe numa visão noturna: não temas descer — lá far-te-ei uma grande nação, descerei contigo e certamente te farei voltar. Depois o capítulo detém-se numa lista: as setenta almas da casa de Jacob que entram no Egito, nomeadas tribo a tribo, a fixar a família que virá a ser povo.

Israel partiu com tudo o que tinha, chegou a Berseba e ofereceu sacrifícios ao Deus de seu pai, Isaque.

Deus falou a Israel em visões de noite, e disse: “Jacó, Jacó!” Ele respondeu: “Eis-me aqui.”

Ele disse: “Eu sou Deus, o Deus de seu pai. Não tenha medo de descer ao Egito, pois lá farei de você uma grande nação.

Eu descerei com você ao Egito. Eu também certamente o farei subir de novo. A mão de José fechará os seus olhos.”

Jacó levantou-se de Berseba, e os filhos de Israel levaram Jacó, seu pai, seus pequeninos e suas mulheres, nas carroças que o Faraó tinha enviado para transportá-lo.

Eles levaram seus rebanhos e os seus bens, que haviam adquirido na terra de Canaã, e chegaram ao Egito — Jacó e toda a sua descendência com ele,

Os filhos de Judá: Er, Onã, Selá, Perez e Zerá; mas Er e Onã morreram na terra de Canaã. Os filhos de Perez foram Hezrom e Hamul.

Os filhos de Issacar: Tola, Puva, Jó e Sinrom.

Os filhos de Zebulom: Serede, Elom e Jaleel.

Estes são os filhos de Lia, que ela deu à luz a Jacó em Padã-Arã, além de sua filha Diná. Todas as almas de seus filhos e filhas foram trinta e três.

Os filhos de Gade: Zifião, Hagi, Suni, Esbom, Eri, Arodi e Areli.
- 17
Os filhos de Aser: Imná, Isvá, Isvi, Berias e Sera, a irmã deles. Os filhos de Berias: Héber e Malquiel.

Estes são os filhos de Zilpa, a quem Labão deu a sua filha Lia; e ela os deu à luz a Jacó, totalizando dezesseis almas.

Os filhos de Raquel, mulher de Jacó: José e Benjamim.

A José, na terra do Egito, nasceram Manassés e Efraim, que Asenate, filha de Potífera, sacerdote de Om, lhe deu à luz.

Os filhos de Benjamim: Belá, Bequer, Asbel, Gera, Naamã, Eí, Rôs, Mupim, Hupim e Arde.

Israel traveled with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father, Isaac.

God spoke to Israel in the visions of the night, and said, “Jacob, Jacob!” He said, “Here I am.”

He said, “I am God, the God of your father. Don’t be afraid to go down into Egypt, for there I will make of you a great nation.

I will go down with you into Egypt. I will also surely bring you up again. Joseph’s hand will close your eyes.”

Jacob rose up from Beersheba, and the sons of Israel carried Jacob, their father, their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him.

They took their livestock, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt—Jacob, and all his offspring with him,

his sons, and his sons’ sons with him, his daughters, and his sons’ daughters, and he brought all his offspring with him into Egypt.

These are the names of the children of Israel, who came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn.

The sons of Reuben: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.

The sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman.

Joseph prepared his chariot, and went up to meet Israel, his father, in Goshen. He presented himself to him, and fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while.

Israel said to Joseph, “Now let me die, since I have seen your face, that you are still alive.”

Joseph said to his brothers, and to his father’s house, “I will go up, and speak with Pharaoh, and will tell him, ‘My brothers, and my father’s house, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me.

These men are shepherds, for they have been keepers of livestock, and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have.’

It will happen, when Pharaoh summons you, and will say, ‘What is your occupation?’
- 34
that you shall say, ‘Your servants have been keepers of livestock from our youth even until now, both we, and our fathers:’ that you may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination to the Egyptians.”
Do reencontro a um plano
Jacob envia Judá adiante, rumo a Gósen. José sobe no seu carro, lança-se ao pescoço do pai e chora um bom bocado; Israel diz que já pode morrer, pois viu vivo o rosto de José.
José orienta então a família sobre o que dizer ao faraó — que são criadores de gado —, sabendo que os pastores são abominação para os egípcios, o que lhes há de garantir a terra à parte de Gósen.
