No início do reinado de Jeoaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, veio esta palavra da parte do SENHOR:
- 2
“Assim diz o SENHOR: ‘Fique no pátio da casa do SENHOR e fale a todas as cidades de Judá que vêm adorar na casa do SENHOR, todas as palavras que eu lhe ordeno que lhes fale. Não omita nem uma palavra.
- 3
Pode ser que eles ouçam, e cada um se converta do seu mau caminho, para que eu desista do mal que planejo fazer a eles por causa da maldade de suas ações.’”

Você lhes dirá: “Assim diz o SENHOR: ‘Se vocês não me ouvirem, para andarem na minha lei que coloquei diante de vocês,
- 5
para ouvirem as palavras dos meus servos, os profetas, que eu lhes envio, levantando-me cedo e enviando-os — mas vocês não têm ouvido —
- 6
então farei desta casa como Siló, e farei desta cidade uma maldição para todas as nações da terra.’”

Os sacerdotes, os profetas e todo o povo ouviram Jeremias falando estas palavras na casa do SENHOR.

Quando Jeremias terminou de falar tudo o que o SENHOR lhe havia ordenado que falasse a todo o povo, os sacerdotes, os profetas e todo o povo o agarraram, dizendo: “Certamente você morrerá!

Por que você profetizou em nome do SENHOR, dizendo: ‘Esta casa será como Siló, e esta cidade ficará desolada, sem habitantes’?” E todo o povo se aglomerou ao redor de Jeremias na casa do SENHOR.

Quando os príncipes de Judá ouviram estas coisas, subiram da casa do rei para a casa do SENHOR; e se assentaram à entrada da porta nova da casa do SENHOR.

Então os sacerdotes e os profetas falaram aos príncipes e a todo o povo, dizendo: “Este homem é digno de morte, pois profetizou contra esta cidade, como vocês ouviram com os seus próprios ouvidos.”

Então Jeremias falou a todos os príncipes e a todo o povo, dizendo: “O SENHOR me enviou para profetizar contra esta casa e contra esta cidade todas as palavras que vocês ouviram.

Agora, portanto, corrijam os seus caminhos e as suas ações, e obedeçam à voz do SENHOR, seu Deus; então o SENHOR desistirá do mal que pronunciou contra vocês.
- 14
Quanto a mim, eis que estou nas suas mãos. Façam comigo o que for bom e reto aos seus olhos.
- 15
Saibam apenas com certeza que, se me matarem, trarão sangue inocente sobre vocês mesmos, sobre esta cidade e sobre os seus habitantes; pois, na verdade, o SENHOR me enviou a vocês para falar todas estas palavras aos seus ouvidos.”

Então os príncipes e todo o povo disseram aos sacerdotes e aos profetas: “Este homem não é digno de morte; pois ele nos falou em nome do SENHOR, nosso Deus.”

Então alguns dos anciãos da terra se levantaram e falaram a toda a assembleia do povo, dizendo:

“Miqueias, o morastita, profetizou nos dias de Ezequias, rei de Judá; e ele falou a todo o povo de Judá, dizendo: ‘Assim diz o SENHOR dos Exércitos: “‘Sião será arada como um campo, e Jerusalém se tornará um amontoado de ruínas, e o monte da casa como os lugares altos de uma floresta.’

Acaso Ezequias, rei de Judá, e todo o Judá o mataram? Não temeu ele ao SENHOR, e suplicou o favor do SENHOR, e o SENHOR desistiu do desastre que havia pronunciado contra eles? Dessa forma, cometeríamos um grande mal contra as nossas próprias almas!”

Houve também um homem que profetizou em nome do SENHOR, Urias, filho de Semaías, de Quiriate-Jearim; e ele profetizou contra esta cidade e contra esta terra de acordo com todas as palavras de Jeremias.

Quando o rei Jeoaquim, com todos os seus valentes e todos os príncipes, ouviram as suas palavras, o rei procurou matá-lo; mas quando Urias ouviu isso, teve medo, fugiu e foi para o Egito.

Então o rei Jeoaquim enviou Elnatã, filho de Acbor, e alguns homens com ele para o Egito.

Eles tiraram Urias do Egito e o trouxeram ao rei Jeoaquim, que o matou à espada e lançou o seu cadáver nas sepulturas do povo comum.
- 24
Mas a mão de Aicão, filho de Safã, estava com Jeremias, para que não o entregassem nas mãos do povo para ser morto.

In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the LORD:
- 2
“The LORD says: ‘Stand in the court of the LORD’s house, and speak to all the cities of Judah which come to worship in the LORD’s house, all the words that I command you to speak to them. Don’t omit a word.
- 3
It may be they will listen, and every man turn from his evil way, that I may relent from the evil which I intend to do to them because of the evil of their doings.’”

You shall tell them, “The LORD says: ‘If you will not listen to me, to walk in my law which I have set before you,
- 5
to listen to the words of my servants the prophets whom I send to you, even rising up early and sending them—but you have not listened—
- 6
then I will make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth.’”

The priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the LORD’s house.
- 8
When Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the LORD had commanded him to speak to all the people, the priests and the prophets and all the people seized him, saying, “You shall surely die!
- 9
Why have you prophesied in the LORD’s name, saying, ‘This house will be like Shiloh, and this city will be desolate, without inhabitant’?” All the people were crowded around Jeremiah in the LORD’s house.

When the princes of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king’s house to the LORD’s house; and they sat in the entry of the new gate of the LORD’s house.

Then the priests and the prophets spoke to the princes and to all the people, saying, “This man is worthy of death, for he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your ears.”
- 12
Then Jeremiah spoke to all the princes and to all the people, saying, “The LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that you have heard.
- 13
Now therefore amend your ways and your doings, and obey the LORD your God’s voice; then the LORD will relent from the evil that he has pronounced against you.
- 14
But as for me, behold, I am in your hand. Do with me what is good and right in your eyes.
- 15
Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood on yourselves, on this city, and on its inhabitants; for in truth the LORD has sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears.”

Then the princes and all the people said to the priests and to the prophets: “This man is not worthy of death; for he has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God.”
- 17
Then certain of the elders of the land rose up, and spoke to all the assembly of the people, saying,
- 18
“Micah the Morashtite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah; and he spoke to all the people of Judah, saying, ‘The LORD of Armies says: “‘Zion will be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem will become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest.’
- 19
Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death? Didn’t he fear the LORD, and entreat the favor of the LORD, and the LORD relented of the disaster which he had pronounced against them? We would commit great evil against our own souls that way!”

There was also a man who prophesied in the LORD’s name, Uriah the son of Shemaiah of Kiriath Jearim; and he prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah.

When Jehoiakim the king, with all his mighty men and all the princes heard his words, the king sought to put him to death; but when Uriah heard it, he was afraid, and fled, and went into Egypt.

Then Jehoiakim the king sent Elnathan the son of Achbor and certain men with him into Egypt.
- 23
They fetched Uriah out of Egypt and brought him to Jehoiakim the king, who killed him with the sword and cast his dead body into the graves of the common people.
- 24
But the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, so that they didn’t give him into the hand of the people to put him to death.
