A palavra que veio de Javé a Jeremias, depois que Nebuzaradan o capitão da guarda o havia libertado de Ramá, quando o havia levado acorrentado entre todos os cativos de Jerusalém e Judá que foram levados em cativeiro para a Babilônia.

O capitão da guarda levou Jeremias e lhe disse: “Yahweh seu Deus pronunciou este mal neste lugar;

e Yahweh o trouxe, e fez de acordo com o que ele falou. Porque você pecou contra Javé, e não obedeceu a sua voz, portanto, esta coisa veio sobre você”.

Agora, eis que hoje eu o liberto das correntes que estão em sua mão. Se lhe parece bom vir comigo à Babilônia, venha, e eu cuidarei de você; mas se lhe parece mau vir comigo à Babilônia, não o faça. Eis que toda a terra está diante de você. Onde lhe parece bom e correto ir, vá para lá”.

Agora, enquanto ele ainda não tinha voltado, “Volte então”, disse ele, “para Gedaliah, o filho de Ahikam, o filho de Shaphan, a quem o rei da Babilônia nomeou governador das cidades de Judá, e habitar com ele entre o povo; ou vá para onde lhe pareça certo ir”. Então o capitão da guarda lhe deu comida e um presente, e o deixou ir.

Então Jeremias foi para Gedaliah, filho de Ahikam, para Mizpah, e viveu com ele entre as pessoas que ficaram na terra.

Agora, quando todos os capitães das forças que estavam nos campos, mesmo eles e seus homens, ouviram que o rei da Babilônia havia feito de Gedalias o filho do governador de Ahikam na terra, e se comprometeram com ele homens, mulheres, crianças, e dos mais pobres da terra, daqueles que não foram levados cativos para Babilônia,

então Ismael, filho de Netanias, e Johananan e Jonathan, filhos de Kareah, e Seraías, filho de Tanhumeth, e os filhos de Ephai, o netofatita, e Jezanias, filho do maacatita, eles e seus homens vieram para Gedaliah, para Mizpah.

Gedaliah o filho de Ahikam o filho de Shaphan jurou a eles e aos seus homens, dizendo: “Não tenham medo de servir aos caldeus. Habite na terra, e sirva o rei da Babilônia, e estará bem com você.

Quanto a mim, eis que habitarei em Mizpah, para estar diante dos caldeus que virão até nós; mas vós, colhei vinho e frutas de verão e azeite, e colocai-os em vossas embarcações, e habitai em vossas cidades que tomastes”.

Da mesma forma, quando todos os judeus que estavam em Moab, e entre as crianças de Amon, e em Edom, e que estavam em todos os países, ouviram que o rei da Babilônia havia deixado um remanescente de Judá, e que ele havia colocado sobre eles Gedalias, filho de Ahikam, filho de Shaphan,

então todos os judeus voltaram de todos os lugares onde foram expulsos, e vieram para a terra de Judá, para Gedalias, para Mizpah, e colheram muito vinho e frutas de verão.

Moreover Johanan o filho de Kareah, e todos os capitães das forças que estavam nos campos, vieram a Gedaliah para Mizpah,

e lhe disseram: “Você sabe que Baalis, o rei dos filhos de Amon, enviou Ismael, o filho de Nethaniah, para tirar sua vida”? Mas Gedaliah, o filho de Ahikam, não acreditava neles.

Então Johanan, o filho de Kareah, falou em segredo com Gedaliah em Mizpah, dizendo: “Por favor, deixe-me ir, e eu matarei Ismael, o filho de Nethaniah, e nenhum homem saberá disso”. Por que ele deveria tirar sua vida, para que todos os judeus que estão reunidos a você sejam dispersos, e o remanescente de Judá pereça”?

Mas Gedaliah, filho de Ahikam, disse a Johanan o filho de Kareah: “Você não fará isso, pois fala falsamente de Ismael”.

The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, after Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him being bound in chains among all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah who were carried away captive to Babylon.

The captain of the guard took Jeremiah and said to him, “The LORD your God pronounced this evil on this place;

and the LORD has brought it, and done according as he spoke. Because you have sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed his voice, therefore this thing has come on you.

Now, behold, I release you today from the chains which are on your hand. If it seems good to you to come with me into Babylon, come, and I will take care of you; but if it seems bad to you to come with me into Babylon, don’t. Behold, all the land is before you. Where it seems good and right to you to go, go there.”

Now while he had not yet gone back, “Go back then,” he said, “to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people; or go wherever it seems right to you to go.” So the captain of the guard gave him food and a present, and let him go.

Then Jeremiah went to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah, and lived with him among the people who were left in the land.

Now when all the captains of the forces who were in the fields, even they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land, and had committed to him men, women, children, and of the poorest of the land, of those who were not carried away captive to Babylon,

then Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men came to Gedaliah to Mizpah.

Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan swore to them and to their men, saying, “Don’t be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it will be well with you.

As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah, to stand before the Chaldeans who will come to us; but you, gather wine and summer fruits and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that you have taken.”

Likewise when all the Jews who were in Moab, and among the children of Ammon, and in Edom, and who were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan,

then all the Jews returned out of all places where they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah, to Mizpah, and gathered very much wine and summer fruits.

Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces who were in the fields, came to Gedaliah to Mizpah,
- 14
and said to him, “Do you know that Baalis the king of the children of Ammon has sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam didn’t believe them.

Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, “Please let me go, and I will kill Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man will know it. Why should he take your life, that all the Jews who are gathered to you should be scattered, and the remnant of Judah perish?”

But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said to Johanan the son of Kareah, “You shall not do this thing, for you speak falsely of Ishmael.”
