João 14

Ainda à mesa, Jesus conforta os discípulos abalados: na casa do seu Pai há muitas moradas, e ele vai preparar lugar. Tomé pergunta pelo caminho; Filipe pede ver o Pai. Cada pergunta arranca uma resposta mais plena. As respostas estão entre as mais citadas do livro: "Eu sou o caminho, a verdade e a vida" (v. 6), e a promessa de outro Consolador, o Espírito da verdade.

“Não se turbe o seu coração. Creiam em Deus. Creiam também em mim.

Na casa de meu Pai há muitas moradas. Se não fosse assim, eu teria dito a vocês. Vou preparar um lugar para vocês.

E se eu for e preparar um lugar para vocês, virei outra vez e os receberei para mim mesmo; para que onde eu estou, vocês também estejam.

Vocês sabem para onde eu vou, e conhecem o caminho.”

Tomé lhe disse: “Senhor, não sabemos para onde vais. Como podemos saber o caminho?”

Jesus lhe disse: “Eu sou o caminho, a verdade e a vida. Ninguém vem ao Pai, a não ser por mim.
7
Se vocês me conhecessem, também conheceriam a meu Pai. De agora em diante, vocês o conhecem e o têm visto.”

Filipe lhe disse: “Senhor, mostra-nos o Pai, e isso nos basta.”

Jesus lhe disse: “Estou com vocês há tanto tempo, e você não me conhece, Filipe? Quem me vê, vê o Pai. Como você diz: ‘Mostra-nos o Pai’?

Você não crê que eu estou no Pai, e o Pai em mim? As palavras que eu digo a vocês, não as falo por mim mesmo; mas o Pai, que vive em mim, faz as suas obras.
11
Creiam-me que estou no Pai, e o Pai em mim; ou então creiam-me por causa das próprias obras.
12
Com toda a certeza lhes digo: aquele que crê em mim, também fará as obras que eu faço; e fará obras maiores do que estas, porque eu vou para o meu Pai.
13
E tudo o que vocês pedirem em meu nome, eu o farei, para que o Pai seja glorificado no Filho.

Se vocês pedirem qualquer coisa em meu nome, eu o farei.
15
Se vocês me amam, guardem os meus mandamentos.

Eu rogarei ao Pai, e ele lhes dará outro Consolador, para que esteja com vocês para sempre:

o Espírito da verdade, que o mundo não pode receber, porque não o vê nem o conhece. Vocês o conhecem, porque ele vive com vocês e estará em vocês.
18
Não os deixarei órfãos. Eu virei para vocês.
19
Mais um pouco, e o mundo não me verá mais; mas vocês me verão. Porque eu vivo, vocês também viverão.
20
Naquele dia vocês saberão que eu estou em meu Pai, e vocês em mim, e eu em vocês.
21
Aquele que tem os meus mandamentos e os guarda, esse é o que me ama. Aquele que me ama será amado por meu Pai, e eu o amarei, e me revelarei a ele.”

Judas (não o Iscariotes) lhe disse: “Senhor, o que aconteceu para que estejas prestes a te revelar a nós, e não ao mundo?”

Jesus lhe respondeu: “Se alguém me ama, guardará a minha palavra. Meu Pai o amará, e nós viremos para ele e faremos nele a nossa morada.
24
Quem não me ama não guarda as minhas palavras. A palavra que vocês ouvem não é minha, mas do Pai que me enviou.
25
“Tenho dito estas coisas a vocês enquanto ainda vivo com vocês.
26
Mas o Consolador, o Espírito Santo, a quem o Pai enviará em meu nome, lhes ensinará todas as coisas e lhes lembrará de tudo o que eu disse a vocês.
27
Deixo-lhes a paz. A minha paz lhes dou; não a dou como o mundo a dá. Não se turbe o seu coração, nem se atemorize.
28
Vocês ouviram o que eu lhes disse: ‘Vou embora, e voltarei para vocês.’ Se vocês me amassem, se alegrariam porque eu disse: ‘Vou para o meu Pai’; pois o Pai é maior do que eu.
29
Agora eu lhes disse isso antes que aconteça, para que, quando acontecer, vocês creiam.
30
Já não falarei muito com vocês, pois o príncipe do mundo vem, e ele não tem nada em mim.
31
Mas para que o mundo saiba que eu amo o Pai, e que faço assim como o Pai me ordenou. Levantem-se, vamos sair daqui.

“Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me.

In my Father’s house are many homes. If it weren’t so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you.

If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will receive you to myself; that where I am, you may be there also.

You know where I go, and you know the way.”

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going. How can we know the way?”

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.
7
If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on, you know him and have seen him.”

Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”
9
Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you such a long time, and do you not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father. How do you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
10
Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I tell you, I speak not from myself; but the Father who lives in me does his works.
11
Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me; or else believe me for the very works’ sake.
12
Most certainly I tell you, he who believes in me, the works that I do, he will do also; and he will do greater works than these, because I am going to my Father.
13
Whatever you will ask in my name, I will do it, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14
If you will ask anything in my name, I will do it.
15
If you love me, keep my commandments.
16
I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever:
17
the Spirit of truth, whom the world can’t receive, for it doesn’t see him and doesn’t know him. You know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
18
I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you.
19
Yet a little while, and the world will see me no more; but you will see me. Because I live, you will live also.
20
In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.
21
One who has my commandments and keeps them, that person is one who loves me. One who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him, and will reveal myself to him.”
22
Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, what has happened that you are about to reveal yourself to us, and not to the world?”
23
Jesus answered him, “If a man loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
24
He who doesn’t love me doesn’t keep my words. The word which you hear isn’t mine, but the Father’s who sent me.
25
“I have said these things to you while still living with you.
26
But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you.
27
Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.
28
You heard how I told you, ‘I am going away, and I will come back to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced because I said ‘I am going to my Father;’ for the Father is greater than I.
29
Now I have told you before it happens so that when it happens, you may believe.
30
I will no more speak much with you, for the prince of the world comes, and he has nothing in me.
31
But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father commanded me, even so I do. Arise, let’s go from here.

Ver o Pai no Filho

Ao pedido de Filipe, Jesus responde que "quem me viu a mim, viu o Pai" (v. 9), assentando a afirmação nas obras que o Pai realiza por meio dele. Conhecer Jesus é apresentado como conhecer Deus.

Deixa um presente de despedida distinto do do mundo: "Deixo-vos a paz" (v. 27), e termina ao levantar-se para partir, pois o príncipe do mundo vem, mas nada tem nele.
