João 16

Jesus avisa os onze de que hão de ser expulsos das sinagogas e até mortos, e explica depois por que a sua partida os beneficia: só indo-se embora pode enviar o Consolador, o Espírito da verdade, que há de convencer o mundo e guiá-los a toda a verdade. Repare-se no enigma do "pouco tempo" que confunde os discípulos (v. 16-18) e na imagem da mulher em trabalho de parto cuja angústia se torna alegria (v. 21). O discurso fecha com a calma de quem já venceu o mundo.

“Tenho dito estas coisas a vocês para que não tropecem.

Eles os expulsarão das sinagogas. Sim, vem a hora em que todo aquele que os matar pensará que está prestando culto a Deus.

Eles farão estas coisas porque não conheceram o Pai, nem a mim.
4
Mas eu lhes disse estas coisas para que, quando chegar a hora, vocês se lembrem de que eu lhes falei sobre elas. Não lhes disse estas coisas desde o princípio, porque eu estava com vocês.

Mas agora vou para aquele que me enviou, e nenhum de vocês me pergunta: ‘Para onde você vai?’

Mas, porque lhes disse estas coisas, a tristeza encheu o coração de vocês.
7
No entanto, eu lhes digo a verdade: É para o bem de vocês que eu vá; pois, se eu não for, o Consolador não virá a vocês. Mas, se eu for, eu o enviarei a vocês.
8
Quando ele vier, convencerá o mundo do pecado, da justiça e do juízo;
9
do pecado, porque não creem em mim;
10
da justiça, porque vou para meu Pai, e vocês não me verão mais;
11
do juízo, porque o príncipe deste mundo foi julgado.

“Ainda tenho muitas coisas para lhes dizer, mas vocês não as podem suportar agora.
13
No entanto, quando ele, o Espírito da verdade, vier, ele os guiará a toda a verdade, pois não falará de si mesmo; mas tudo o que ouvir, ele falará. Ele lhes anunciará as coisas que estão por vir.
14
Ele me glorificará, pois tomará do que é meu e o anunciará a vocês.
15
Tudo o que o Pai tem é meu; por isso eu disse que ele toma do que é meu e o anunciará a vocês.

“Mais um pouco, e vocês não me verão. E outra vez um pouco, e vocês me verão.”
17
Alguns dos seus discípulos, portanto, disseram uns aos outros: “O que é isso que ele nos diz: 'Mais um pouco, e vocês não me verão, e outra vez um pouco, e vocês me verão'; e: 'Porque vou para o Pai' ?”

Eles diziam, portanto: “O que é isso que ele diz: 'Mais um pouco' ? Não sabemos o que ele está dizendo.”

Portanto, Jesus percebeu que queriam interrogá-lo, e disse-lhes: “Vocês estão perguntando entre si a respeito disto, que eu disse: 'Mais um pouco, e vocês não me verão, e outra vez um pouco, e vocês me verão'?
20
Com toda a certeza lhes digo que vocês chorarão e se lamentarão, mas o mundo se alegrará. Vocês ficarão tristes, mas a tristeza de vocês se transformará em alegria.
21
A mulher, quando está para dar à luz, sente tristeza, porque a sua hora chegou. Mas, quando dá à luz a criança, ela não se lembra mais da angústia, pela alegria de ter nascido um ser humano no mundo.
22
Portanto, agora vocês têm tristeza, mas eu os verei novamente, e o coração de vocês se alegrará, e ninguém tirará a alegria de vocês.

“Naquele dia vocês não me farão perguntas. Com toda a certeza lhes digo: tudo o que pedirem ao Pai em meu nome, ele lhes dará.
24
Até agora vocês não pediram nada em meu nome. Peçam, e receberão, para que a alegria de vocês seja completa.
25
“Tenho dito estas coisas a vocês por meio de figuras de linguagem. Mas vem a hora em que não lhes falarei mais por meio de figuras de linguagem, mas lhes falarei claramente a respeito do Pai.
26
Naquele dia vocês pedirão em meu nome; e não lhes digo que rogarei ao Pai por vocês,
27
pois o próprio Pai os ama, porque vocês me amaram e creram que eu vim de Deus.
28
Saí do Pai e vim ao mundo. Novamente, deixo o mundo e vou para o Pai.”
29
Seus discípulos lhe disseram: “Eis que agora você fala claramente, e não usa nenhuma figura de linguagem.
30
Agora sabemos que você sabe todas as coisas, e não precisa que ninguém lhe faça perguntas. Por isso cremos que você veio de Deus.”
31
Jesus lhes respondeu: “Vocês creem agora?
32
Eis que vem a hora, sim, e já chegou, em que vocês serão dispersos, cada um para o seu lado, e me deixarão sozinho. Contudo, não estou sozinho, porque o Pai está comigo.
33
Eu lhes disse estas coisas para que em mim vocês tenham paz. No mundo vocês têm aflições; mas tenham bom ânimo! Eu venci o mundo.”

“I have said these things to you so that you wouldn’t be caused to stumble.
2
They will put you out of the synagogues. Yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers service to God.
3
They will do these things because they have not known the Father nor me.
4
But I have told you these things so that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you about them. I didn’t tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.
5
But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’
6
But because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled your heart.
7
Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I don’t go away, the Counselor won’t come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
8
When he has come, he will convict the world about sin, about righteousness, and about judgment;
9
about sin, because they don’t believe in me;
10
about righteousness, because I am going to my Father, and you won’t see me any more;
11
about judgment, because the prince of this world has been judged.
12
“I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now.
13
However, when he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into all truth, for he will not speak from himself; but whatever he hears, he will speak. He will declare to you things that are coming.
14
He will glorify me, for he will take from what is mine and will declare it to you.
15
All things that the Father has are mine; therefore I said that he takes of mine and will declare it to you.
16
“A little while, and you will not see me. Again a little while, and you will see me.”
17
Some of his disciples therefore said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you won’t see me, and again a little while, and you will see me;’ and, ‘Because I go to the Father’ ?”
18
They said therefore, “What is this that he says, ‘A little while’ ? We don’t know what he is saying.”
19
Therefore Jesus perceived that they wanted to ask him, and he said to them, “Do you inquire among yourselves concerning this, that I said, ‘A little while, and you won’t see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’?
20
Most certainly I tell you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.
21
A woman, when she gives birth, has sorrow because her time has come. But when she has delivered the child, she doesn’t remember the anguish any more, for the joy that a human being is born into the world.
22
Therefore you now have sorrow, but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.

“In that day you will ask me no questions. Most certainly I tell you, whatever you may ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.
24
Until now, you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be made full.
25
“I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. But the time is coming when I will no more speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell you plainly about the Father.
26
In that day you will ask in my name; and I don’t say to you that I will pray to the Father for you,
27
for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came from God.
28
I came from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”
29
His disciples said to him, “Behold, now you are speaking plainly, and using no figures of speech.
30
Now we know that you know all things, and don’t need for anyone to question you. By this we believe that you came from God.”
31
Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?
32
Behold, the time is coming, yes, and has now come, that you will be scattered, everyone to his own place, and you will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
33
I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble; but cheer up! I have overcome the world.”

A tristeza tornada alegria

O capítulo assenta numa inversão: a tristeza dos discípulos pela partida de Jesus (v. 6) torna-se a alegria que ninguém lhes poderá tirar (v. 22). O parto da mulher apresenta a cruz e a ressurreição como uma só passagem da angústia para a vida nova.

No final declaram enfim que creem (v. 30), mas Jesus prevê logo que serão dispersos (v. 32): a fé confiante e a falha iminente ficam lado a lado.
