João 4

Jesus atravessa a Samaria — terra que os judeus evitavam — e, cansado, senta-se junto ao poço de Jacob ao meio-dia. A conversa com uma samaritana vai de um gole de água à água viva, aos seus cinco maridos, ao debate sobre qual o monte certo para adorar, até à declaração: "Sou eu". Segue-se o diálogo da seara com os discípulos e, de regresso à Galileia, um segundo sinal: o filho de um oficial curado à distância.

Portanto, quando o Senhor soube que os fariseus tinham ouvido que Jesus estava fazendo e batizando mais discípulos do que João

(embora o próprio Jesus não batizasse, mas sim os seus discípulos),

ele deixou a Judeia e partiu novamente para a Galileia.

Ele precisava passar por Samaria.
5
Assim, chegou a uma cidade de Samaria chamada Sicar, perto do terreno que Jacó deu a seu filho José.

O poço de Jacó estava lá. Jesus, pois, cansado da viagem, sentou-se à beira do poço. Era por volta da hora sexta.
7
Nisso, veio uma mulher de Samaria tirar água. Disse-lhe Jesus: “Dê-me de beber.”
8
Pois os seus discípulos tinham ido à cidade para comprar comida.
9
A mulher samaritana, então, lhe disse: “Como é que o senhor, sendo judeu, pede de beber a mim, que sou mulher samaritana?” (Pois os judeus não se dão com os samaritanos.)
10
Jesus lhe respondeu: “Se você conhecesse o dom de Deus e quem é o que lhe diz: 'Dê-me de beber', você lhe teria pedido, e ele lhe teria dado água viva.”

A mulher lhe disse: “Senhor, o senhor não tem com que tirar a água, e o poço é fundo. De onde, pois, consegue essa água viva?
12
Por acaso o senhor é maior do que o nosso pai Jacó, que nos deu o poço, do qual ele mesmo bebeu, assim como os seus filhos e o seu gado?”
13
Jesus lhe respondeu: “Todo aquele que beber desta água terá sede novamente,
14
mas quem beber da água que eu lhe der nunca mais terá sede; pelo contrário, a água que eu lhe der se tornará nele uma fonte de água a jorrar para a vida eterna.”
15
A mulher lhe disse: “Senhor, dê-me dessa água, para que eu não tenha mais sede, nem precise vir até aqui para tirá-la.”
16
Jesus lhe disse: “Vá, chame o seu marido e volte aqui.”
17
A mulher respondeu: “Não tenho marido.” Jesus lhe disse: “Você disse bem: 'Não tenho marido',
18
pois você teve cinco maridos; e o que você tem agora não é seu marido. Nisso você falou a verdade.”
19
A mulher lhe disse: “Senhor, vejo que o senhor é profeta.
20
Nossos pais adoraram neste monte, e vocês, judeus, dizem que em Jerusalém é o lugar onde se deve adorar.”
21
Jesus lhe disse: “Mulher, acredite em mim, a hora vem quando nem neste monte nem em Jerusalém vocês adorarão o Pai.
22
Vocês adoram o que não conhecem. Nós adoramos o que conhecemos; pois a salvação vem dos judeus.
23
Mas a hora vem, e agora é, quando os verdadeiros adoradores adorarão o Pai em espírito e em verdade, pois o Pai procura a tais para serem os seus adoradores.
24
Deus é espírito, e é necessário que os que o adoram o adorem em espírito e em verdade.”
25
A mulher lhe disse: “Eu sei que o Messias vem, aquele que é chamado Cristo. Quando ele vier, nos anunciará todas as coisas.”
26
Jesus lhe disse: “Sou eu, aquele que fala com você.”
27
Naquele momento, chegaram os seus discípulos. Eles se admiraram de que ele estivesse falando com uma mulher; contudo, ninguém disse: “O que o senhor procura?” ou: “Por que fala com ela?”
28
Então a mulher deixou o seu cântaro, foi à cidade e disse ao povo:
29
“Venham ver um homem que me disse tudo o que eu tenho feito. Será que este é o Cristo?”
30
Eles saíram da cidade e foram ao encontro dele.
31
Nesse meio tempo, os discípulos lhe rogavam, dizendo: “Rabi, coma.”
32
Mas ele lhes disse: “Eu tenho uma comida para comer que vocês não conhecem.”
33
Os discípulos, então, diziam uns aos outros: “Será que alguém lhe trouxe algo para comer?”
34
Jesus lhes disse: “A minha comida é fazer a vontade daquele que me enviou e realizar a sua obra.
35
Vocês não dizem: 'Ainda faltam quatro meses até a colheita'? Eis que eu lhes digo: levantem os olhos e vejam os campos, pois já estão brancos para a colheita.
36
Aquele que colhe recebe salário e ajunta fruto para a vida eterna, para que tanto o que semeia quanto o que colhe possam se alegrar juntos.
37
Pois nisto o ditado é verdadeiro: 'Um semeia, e outro colhe.'
38
Eu os enviei para colher aquilo em que vocês não trabalharam. Outros trabalharam, e vocês entraram no trabalho deles.”
39
Daquela cidade, muitos dos samaritanos creram nele por causa da palavra da mulher, que testemunhou: “Ele me disse tudo o que eu tenho feito.”
40
Assim, quando os samaritanos chegaram até ele, pediram-lhe que ficasse com eles. E ele ficou ali dois dias.
41
Muitos mais creram por causa da sua palavra.
42
E diziam à mulher: “Agora cremos, não por causa do que você falou; pois nós mesmos o ouvimos, e sabemos que este é verdadeiramente o Cristo, o Salvador do mundo.”
43
Após os dois dias, ele partiu dali e foi para a Galileia.
44
Pois o próprio Jesus testemunhou que um profeta não tem honra em sua própria terra.
45
Assim, quando chegou à Galileia, os galileus o receberam, tendo visto todas as coisas que ele fez em Jerusalém durante a festa, pois eles também tinham ido à festa.
46
Jesus foi, portanto, novamente a Caná da Galileia, onde transformara a água em vinho. Havia ali um certo oficial do rei, cujo filho estava doente em Cafarnaum.
47
Quando ele ouviu que Jesus tinha vindo da Judeia para a Galileia, foi até ele e lhe implorou que descesse e curasse o seu filho, pois ele estava à beira da morte.

Jesus, então, lhe disse: “A menos que vocês vejam sinais e maravilhas, de modo nenhum crerão.”
49
O oficial do rei lhe disse: “Senhor, desça antes que o meu filho morra.”
50
Jesus lhe disse: “Pode ir. O seu filho vive.” O homem creu na palavra que Jesus lhe falou e seguiu o seu caminho.
51
Enquanto ele já estava descendo, os seus servos vieram ao seu encontro e lhe deram a notícia, dizendo: “O seu filho vive!”
52
Então ele lhes perguntou a hora em que ele começou a melhorar. Eles lhe disseram: “Ontem, à hora sétima, a febre o deixou.”
53
Assim, o pai reconheceu que havia sido naquela mesma hora em que Jesus lhe dissera: “O seu filho vive.” E ele creu, assim como toda a sua casa.
54
Este foi novamente o segundo sinal que Jesus fez, depois de vir da Judeia para a Galileia.

Therefore when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John

(although Jesus himself didn’t baptize, but his disciples),

he left Judea and departed into Galilee.

He needed to pass through Samaria.

So he came to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being tired from his journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7
A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.”
8
For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
9
The Samaritan woman therefore said to him, “How is it that you, being a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
10
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
11
The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. So where do you get that living water?
12
Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his children and his livestock?”
13
Jesus answered her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again,
14
but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst again; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”
15
The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I don’t get thirsty, neither come all the way here to draw.”
16
Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”
17
The woman answered, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You said well, ‘I have no husband,’
18
for you have had five husbands; and he whom you now have is not your husband. This you have said truly.”
19
The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.
20
Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.”
21
Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.
22
You worship that which you don’t know. We worship that which we know; for salvation is from the Jews.
23
But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such to be his worshipers.
24
God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
25
The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming, he who is called Christ. When he has come, he will declare to us all things.”
26
Jesus said to her, “I am he, the one who speaks to you.”
27
Just then, his disciples came. They marveled that he was speaking with a woman; yet no one said, “What are you looking for?” or, “Why do you speak with her?”
28
So the woman left her water pot, went away into the city, and said to the people,
29
“Come, see a man who told me everything that I have done. Can this be the Christ?”
30
They went out of the city, and were coming to him.
31
In the meanwhile, the disciples urged him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”
32
But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you don’t know about.”
33
The disciples therefore said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?”
34
Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.
35
Don’t you say, ‘There are yet four months until the harvest’? Behold, I tell you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, that they are white for harvest already.
36
He who reaps receives wages and gathers fruit to eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.
37
For in this the saying is true, ‘One sows, and another reaps.’
38
I sent you to reap that for which you haven’t labored. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”
39
From that city many of the Samaritans believed in him because of the word of the woman, who testified, “He told me everything that I have done.”
40
So when the Samaritans came to him, they begged him to stay with them. He stayed there two days.
41
Many more believed because of his word.
42
They said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of your speaking; for we have heard for ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.”
43
After the two days he went out from there and went into Galilee.
44
For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.
45
So when he came into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things that he did in Jerusalem at the feast, for they also went to the feast.
46
Jesus came therefore again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water into wine. There was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum.
47
When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to him and begged him that he would come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death.
48
Jesus therefore said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders, you will in no way believe.”
49
The nobleman said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”
50
Jesus said to him, “Go your way. Your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way.
51
As he was going down, his servants met him and reported, saying “Your child lives!”
52
So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. They said therefore to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour, the fever left him.”
53
So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” He believed, as did his whole house.
54
This is again the second sign that Jesus did, having come out of Judea into Galilee.

Uma pregadora inesperada

O capítulo contrasta Nicodemos, mestre de Israel que veio de noite, com esta mulher sem nome que encontra Jesus à hora sexta, em pleno dia. Ele disse-lhe "tudo quanto tenho feito", e ela deixa o cântaro para avisar a cidade: muitos samaritanos creem pela sua palavra antes de o ouvirem.

Adorar "em espírito e em verdade" altera toda a disputa do monte: deixa de importar onde e passa a importar como. A frase final dos samaritanos chama-lhe "o Salvador do mundo", alargando o alcance do livro para além de Israel.
