Joel 3

O olhar volta-se para fora. Deus reúne todas as nações no vale de Josafá (v.2) para responderem pelo que fizeram ao seu povo disperso: vender meninos por uma prostituta ou por vinho (v.3), e Tiro, Sídon e a Filisteia por saquearem os tesouros do templo e venderem os filhos de Judá aos gregos (vv.5-6). Repare na célebre inversão do v.10: a imagem de paz de forjar espadas em arados corre ao contrário aqui — os arados tornam-se espadas enquanto se convocam as nações a uma guerra que não podem vencer.

“Pois, eis que naqueles dias, e naquele tempo, quando eu restaurar a sorte de Judá e de Jerusalém,

reunirei todas as nações, e as farei descer ao vale de Josafá; e ali executarei juízo sobre elas por causa do meu povo, e da minha herança, Israel, a quem espalharam entre as nações. Eles repartiram a minha terra,

e lançaram sortes sobre o meu povo, e deram um menino por uma prostituta, e venderam uma menina por vinho, para que pudessem beber.
4
“Sim, e o que vocês têm comigo, Tiro e Sidom, e todas as regiões da Filístia? Vocês me retribuirão? E se vocês me retribuírem, eu rápida e velozmente farei a retribuição de vocês recair sobre a sua própria cabeça.

Porque vocês levaram a minha prata e o meu ouro, e carregaram os meus mais belos tesouros para os seus templos,

e venderam os filhos de Judá e os filhos de Jerusalém aos filhos dos gregos, para que pudessem afastá-los para longe de suas fronteiras.
7
Eis que eu os despertarei do lugar para onde vocês os venderam, e farei a retribuição de vocês recair sobre a sua própria cabeça;
8
e venderei os seus filhos e as suas filhas nas mãos dos filhos de Judá, e eles os venderão aos homens de Sabá, a uma nação distante, pois o SENHOR falou.”

Proclamem isto entre as nações: “Preparem-se para a guerra! Despertem os valentes. Que todos os guerreiros se aproximem. Que eles subam.

Forjem as suas relhas de arado em espadas, e as suas foices em lanças. Diga o fraco: ‘Eu sou forte.’
11
Apressem-se e venham, todas as nações ao redor, e reúnam-se.” Faze descer ali os teus valentes, ó SENHOR.
12
“Que as nações se despertem, e subam ao vale de Josafá; pois ali me assentarei para julgar todas as nações ao redor.
13
Lancem a foice; pois a seara está madura. Venham, pisem, pois o lagar está cheio, os tonéis transbordam, pois a maldade deles é grande.”
14
Multidões, multidões no vale da decisão! Pois o dia do SENHOR está perto no vale da decisão.
15
O sol e a lua escurecem, e as estrelas retiram o seu brilho.
16
O SENHOR rugirá de Sião, e trovejará de Jerusalém; e os céus e a terra tremerão; mas o SENHOR será um refúgio para o seu povo, e uma fortaleza para os filhos de Israel.
17
“Assim vocês saberão que eu sou o SENHOR, o seu Deus, que habito em Sião, o meu santo monte. Então Jerusalém será santa, e estranhos não passarão mais por ela.
18
Acontecerá naquele dia, que os montes gotejarão vinho doce, as colinas manarão leite, todos os ribeiros de Judá fluirão com águas; e uma fonte fluirá da casa do SENHOR, e regará o vale de Sitim.
19
O Egito será uma desolação e Edom será um deserto desolado, por causa da violência cometida contra os filhos de Judá, porque derramaram sangue inocente em sua terra.
20
Mas Judá será habitada para sempre, e Jerusalém de geração em geração.
21
Eu purificarei o sangue deles que eu não havia purificado, pois o SENHOR habita em Sião.”

“For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem,

I will gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat; and I will execute judgment on them there for my people, and for my heritage, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations. They have divided my land,

and have cast lots for my people, and have given a boy for a prostitute, and sold a girl for wine, that they may drink.
4
“Yes, and what are you to me, Tyre and Sidon, and all the regions of Philistia? Will you repay me? And if you repay me, I will swiftly and speedily return your repayment on your own head.
5
Because you have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried my finest treasures into your temples,
6
and have sold the children of Judah and the children of Jerusalem to the sons of the Greeks, that you may remove them far from their border.
7
Behold, I will stir them up out of the place where you have sold them, and will return your repayment on your own head;
8
and I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hands of the children of Judah, and they will sell them to the men of Sheba, to a faraway nation, for the LORD has spoken it.”
9
Proclaim this among the nations: “Prepare for war! Stir up the mighty men. Let all the warriors draw near. Let them come up.
10
Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruning hooks into spears. Let the weak say, ‘I am strong.’
11
Hurry and come, all you surrounding nations, and gather yourselves together.” Cause your mighty ones to come down there, LORD.
12
“Let the nations arouse themselves, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat; for there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations.
13
Put in the sickle; for the harvest is ripe. Come, tread, for the wine press is full, the vats overflow, for their wickedness is great.”
14
Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.
15
The sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining.
16
The LORD will roar from Zion, and thunder from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth will shake; but the LORD will be a refuge to his people, and a stronghold to the children of Israel.
17
“So you will know that I am the LORD, your God, dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain. Then Jerusalem will be holy, and no strangers will pass through her any more.
18
It will happen in that day, that the mountains will drop down sweet wine, the hills will flow with milk, all the brooks of Judah will flow with waters; and a fountain will flow out from the LORD’s house, and will water the valley of Shittim.
19
Egypt will be a desolation and Edom will be a desolate wilderness, for the violence done to the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land.
20
But Judah will be inhabited forever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.
21
I will cleanse their blood that I have not cleansed, for the LORD dwells in Zion.”

O vale da decisão

A imagem da colheita do v.13 — a foice, o lagar, as cubas a transbordar — transforma o juízo numa vindima pisada, e o v.14 nomeia o lugar por duas vezes: "o vale da decisão". As multidões ajuntam-se não para escolher, mas para serem julgadas.

Contra essa treva, o livro termina em fontes e leite (v.18): uma fonte brota da casa do SENHOR enquanto o Egito e Edom ficam desolados. A Judá promete-se permanência — "habitada para sempre" —, fechando Joel onde começou: na terra, agora sarada.
