Lucas 3

Lucas data o ministério de João com precisão de historiador — o décimo quinto ano de Tibério, Pilatos, os tetrarcas, Anás e Caifás — antes de a palavra de Deus vir até ele no deserto. A sua pregação de arrependimento torna-se prática: multidões, publicanos e soldados perguntam cada um "Que havemos de fazer?" e recebem respostas concretas. João aponta para além de si próprio, para um mais poderoso, e é depois encerrado na prisão. Jesus é batizado e os céus abrem-se; o capítulo termina com uma genealogia que recua, não até Abraão, mas até Adão, "filho de Deus".

No décimo quinto ano do reinado de Tibério César, sendo Pôncio Pilatos governador da Judeia, Herodes tetrarca da Galileia, seu irmão Filipe tetrarca da região da Itureia e Traconites, e Lisânias tetrarca de Abilene,

durante o sumo sacerdócio de Anás e Caifás, a palavra de Deus veio a João, filho de Zacarias, no deserto.

Ele percorreu toda a região ao redor do Jordão, pregando o batismo de arrependimento para remissão de pecados.

Como está escrito no livro das palavras do profeta Isaías: “Voz do que clama no deserto: 'Preparem o caminho do Senhor. Endireitem as suas veredas.

Todo vale será aterrado. Todo monte e colina serão rebaixados. Os caminhos tortuosos se tornarão retos, e os caminhos acidentados serão aplainados.
6
Toda a carne verá a salvação de Deus.'”

Ele dizia, portanto, às multidões que saíam para ser batizadas por ele: “Raça de víboras, quem os avisou para fugir da ira que está por vir?
8
Produzam, pois, frutos dignos de arrependimento, e não comecem a dizer entre si mesmos: 'Temos Abraão por pai'; pois eu lhes digo que destas pedras Deus pode suscitar filhos a Abraão!
9
O machado já está posto à raiz das árvores. Toda árvore, pois, que não produz bom fruto é cortada e lançada ao fogo.”

As multidões lhe perguntavam: “O que devemos fazer, então?”

Ele lhes respondeu: “Quem tem duas túnicas, reparta com quem não tem nenhuma. Quem tem comida, faça o mesmo.”

Publicanos também vieram para ser batizados, e lhe disseram: “Mestre, o que devemos fazer?”

Ele lhes disse: “Não cobrem nada além daquilo que lhes foi estipulado.”
14
Soldados também lhe perguntaram, dizendo: “E quanto a nós? O que devemos fazer?” Ele lhes disse: “Não exturcam a ninguém com violência, nem acusem ninguém falsamente. Contentem-se com o seu salário.”

Como o povo estava na expectativa, e todos questionavam em seus corações a respeito de João, se talvez ele fosse o Cristo,

João respondeu a todos: “Eu, de fato, os batizo com água, mas vem aquele que é mais poderoso do que eu, do qual não sou digno de desamarrar a correia das sandálias. Ele os batizará no Espírito Santo e em fogo.
17
A sua pá de joeirar está na sua mão, e ele limpará completamente a sua eira, e recolherá o trigo no seu celeiro; mas a palha ele queimará com fogo que não se apaga.”
18
Assim, com muitas outras exortações, ele anunciava as boas-novas ao povo,
19
mas o tetrarca Herodes, sendo repreendido por ele por causa de Herodias, mulher de seu irmão, e por todas as maldades que Herodes tinha feito,
20
acrescentou ainda a todas elas esta: encerrou João na prisão.
21
E aconteceu que, ao ser todo o povo batizado, Jesus também foi batizado e estava orando. O céu se abriu,
22
e o Espírito Santo desceu sobre ele em forma corpórea, como uma pomba; e uma voz veio do céu, dizendo: “Tu és o meu Filho amado. Em ti me agrado.”

O próprio Jesus, quando começou a ensinar, tinha cerca de trinta anos de idade, sendo filho (como se supunha) de José, filho de Eli,

filho de Matate, filho de Levi, filho de Melqui, filho de Janai, filho de José,
25
filho de Matatias, filho de Amós, filho de Naum, filho de Esli, filho de Nagai,

Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.
3
He came into all the region around the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for remission of sins.
4
As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make ready the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight.
5
Every valley will be filled. Every mountain and hill will be brought low. The crooked will become straight, and the rough ways smooth.
6
All flesh will see God’s salvation.’”
7
He said therefore to the multitudes who went out to be baptized by him, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8
Therefore produce fruits worthy of repentance, and don’t begin to say among yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father;’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones!
9
Even now the ax also lies at the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

The multitudes asked him, “What then must we do?”
11
He answered them, “He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise.”
12
Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what must we do?”
13
He said to them, “Collect no more than that which is appointed to you.”
14
Soldiers also asked him, saying, “What about us? What must we do?” He said to them, “Extort from no one by violence, neither accuse anyone wrongfully. Be content with your wages.”
15
As the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he was the Christ,
16
John answered them all, “I indeed baptize you with water, but he comes who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire.
17
His winnowing fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
18
Then with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people,
19
but Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all the evil things which Herod had done,
20
added this also to them all, that he shut up John in prison.
21
Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus also had been baptized and was praying. The sky was opened,
22
and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form like a dove on him; and a voice came out of the sky, saying “You are my beloved Son. In you I am well pleased.”
23
Jesus himself, when he began to teach, was about thirty years old, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli,
24
the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,
25
the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai,
26
the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Joseph, the son of Judah,
27
the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri,

Arrependimento com conta de imposto

João não deixa que "temos Abraão por pai" sirva de escudo (v.8); a ascendência nada garante. Quando três grupos lhe pedem pormenores, as suas exigências são económicas e correntes: repartir a túnica que sobra, não cobrar além do estipulado, não extorquir ninguém, contentar-se com o salário (vv.11-14).

Ao traçar a linhagem de Jesus por David e Abraão até Adão (v.38), Lucas alarga o quadro para além de Israel: a genealogia que outros Evangelhos iniciam em Abraão aqui alcança o primeiro homem e o Criador.
