Marcos 9

Num monte alto Jesus é transfigurado diante de Pedro, Tiago e João; aparecem Moisés e Elias, e uma voz vinda da nuvem manda ouvi-lo. Ao descer, encontram um menino com um espírito mudo que os outros discípulos não conseguiram libertar. O restante volta-se para dentro: um segundo anúncio da paixão que os doze receiam questionar, uma discussão sobre quem é o maior e advertências duras sobre fazer tropeçar os pequeninos.

Ele lhes disse: “Em verdade lhes digo que alguns dos que estão aqui de modo nenhum provarão a morte até que vejam o Reino de Deus vindo com poder.”

Seis dias depois, Jesus tomou consigo a Pedro, Tiago e João, e os levou em particular a um alto monte, e foi transfigurado diante deles.

Suas roupas tornaram-se resplandecentes, sobremodo brancas como a neve, como nenhum lavandeiro na terra as poderia branquear.

Elias e Moisés apareceram a eles, e estavam conversando com Jesus.
5
Pedro, tomando a palavra, disse a Jesus: “Rabi, é bom estarmos aqui. Façamos três tendas: uma para o senhor, uma para Moisés e uma para Elias.”
6
Pois ele não sabia o que dizer, porque estavam com muito medo.
7
Veio uma nuvem que os cobriu com a sua sombra, e da nuvem saiu uma voz: “Este é o meu Filho amado. Ouçam-no.”
8
De repente, olhando ao redor, não viram mais ninguém com eles, a não ser unicamente Jesus.
9
Enquanto desciam do monte, ele lhes ordenou que não contassem a ninguém as coisas que tinham visto, até que o Filho do Homem tivesse ressuscitado dentre os mortos.
10
Eles guardaram essa palavra consigo, discutindo o que significava o “ressuscitar dentre os mortos”.
11
Eles lhe perguntaram, dizendo: “Por que os escribas dizem que Elias deve vir primeiro?”
12
Ele lhes disse: “De fato, Elias vem primeiro, e restaura todas as coisas. Como está escrito a respeito do Filho do Homem, que ele deve sofrer muitas coisas e ser desprezado?
13
Mas eu lhes digo que Elias já veio, e também fizeram com ele tudo o que quiseram, assim como está escrito a respeito dele.”
14
Chegando aos discípulos, ele viu uma grande multidão ao redor deles, e escribas discutindo com eles.
15
Imediatamente toda a multidão, ao vê-lo, ficou muito maravilhada e, correndo para ele, o saudou.
16
Ele perguntou aos escribas: “O que vocês estão perguntando a eles?”
17
Um da multidão respondeu: “Mestre, eu trouxe a ti o meu filho, que tem um espírito mudo;
18
e onde quer que o domine, lança-o por terra; e ele espuma pela boca, range os dentes e fica rígido. Eu pedi aos teus discípulos que o expulsassem, e eles não conseguiram.”
19
Ele lhe respondeu: “Ó geração incrédula, até quando estarei com vocês? Até quando os suportarei? Tragam-no a mim.”
20
Eles o trouxeram a ele, e quando ele o viu, imediatamente o espírito o convulsionou e ele caiu no chão, rolando e espumando pela boca.
21
Ele perguntou ao pai dele: “Há quanto tempo isso tem acontecido com ele?” Ele disse: “Desde a infância.
22
Muitas vezes o tem lançado tanto no fogo quanto na água para destruí-lo. Mas se podes fazer alguma coisa, tem compaixão de nós e ajuda-nos.”
23
Jesus lhe disse: “Se tu podes crer, todas as coisas são possíveis ao que crê.”
24
Imediatamente o pai do menino clamou com lágrimas: “Eu creio. Ajuda a minha incredulidade!”
25
Quando Jesus viu que uma multidão vinha correndo, ele repreendeu o espírito imundo, dizendo-lhe: “Espírito mudo e surdo, eu te ordeno, sai dele, e nunca mais entres nele!”
26
Depois de clamar e convulsioná-lo violentamente, saiu dele. O menino ficou como morto, a tal ponto que a maioria deles dizia: “Ele está morto.”
27
Mas Jesus o tomou pela mão e o levantou; e ele ficou em pé.
28
Quando ele entrou em casa, seus discípulos lhe perguntaram em particular: “Por que não pudemos nós expulsá-lo?”
29
Ele lhes disse: “Esta casta não pode sair por nada, a não ser por oração e jejum.”
30
Eles saíram dali e passaram pela Galileia. Ele não queria que ninguém soubesse disso,
31
pois estava ensinando os seus discípulos, e lhes dizia: “O Filho do Homem está sendo entregue nas mãos dos homens, e eles o matarão; e quando for morto, ao terceiro dia ressuscitará.”
32
Mas eles não entendiam a palavra, e tinham medo de lhe perguntar.
33
Ele chegou a Cafarnaum, e quando estava em casa, perguntou-lhes: “O que vocês estavam discutindo entre si no caminho?”
34
Mas eles ficaram calados, pois no caminho haviam discutido uns com os outros sobre quem era o maior.
35
Ele se assentou, chamou os doze e lhes disse: “Se alguém quiser ser o primeiro, será o último de todos, e o servo de todos.”
36
Ele tomou uma criança e a colocou no meio deles. Tomando-a nos braços, disse-lhes:
37
“Quem receber uma destas crianças em meu nome, a mim me recebe; e quem me receber, não recebe a mim, mas àquele que me enviou.”
38
João lhe disse: “Mestre, vimos alguém que não nos segue expulsando demônios em teu nome; e nós o proibimos, porque ele não nos segue.”
39
Mas Jesus disse: “Não o proíbam, pois não há ninguém que faça um milagre em meu nome e possa logo depois falar mal de mim.
40
Pois quem não é contra nós é por nós.
41
Pois quem lhes der de beber um copo de água em meu nome, porque vocês são de Cristo, em verdade lhes digo que de modo nenhum perderá a sua recompensa.
42
“Quem fizer tropeçar um destes pequeninos que creem em mim, melhor lhe seria que fosse lançado no mar com uma pedra de moinho pendurada ao pescoço.
43
Se a sua mão o fizer tropeçar, corte-a. É melhor para você entrar na vida mutilado, do que, tendo as duas mãos, ir para a Geena, para o fogo inextinguível,
44
‘onde o seu verme não morre, e o fogo não se apaga.’
45
Se o seu pé o fizer tropeçar, corte-o. É melhor para você entrar na vida aleijado, do que, tendo os dois pés, ser lançado na Geena, no fogo que nunca se apagará—
46
‘onde o seu verme não morre, e o fogo não se apaga.’
47
Se o seu olho o fizer tropeçar, arranque-o. É melhor para você entrar no Reino de Deus com um só olho, do que, tendo dois olhos, ser lançado na Geena de fogo,
48
‘onde o seu verme não morre, e o fogo não se apaga.’
49
Pois cada um será salgado com fogo, e cada sacrifício será temperado com sal.
50
O sal é bom, mas se o sal perder o seu sabor, com que o temperarão? Tenham sal em vocês mesmos, e estejam em paz uns com os outros.”

He said to them, “Most certainly I tell you, there are some standing here who will in no way taste death until they see God’s Kingdom come with power.”

After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John, and brought them up onto a high mountain privately by themselves, and he was changed into another form in front of them.
3
His clothing became glistening, exceedingly white, like snow, such as no launderer on earth can whiten them.
4
Elijah and Moses appeared to them, and they were talking with Jesus.
5
Peter answered Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let’s make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
6
For he didn’t know what to say, for they were very afraid.
7
A cloud came, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.”
8
Suddenly looking around, they saw no one with them any more, except Jesus only.
9
As they were coming down from the mountain, he commanded them that they should tell no one what things they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
10
They kept this saying to themselves, questioning what the “rising from the dead” meant.
11
They asked him, saying, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
12
He said to them, “Elijah indeed comes first, and restores all things. How is it written about the Son of Man, that he should suffer many things and be despised?
13
But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they have also done to him whatever they wanted to, even as it is written about him.”
14
Coming to the disciples, he saw a great multitude around them, and scribes questioning them.
15
Immediately all the multitude, when they saw him, were greatly amazed, and running to him, greeted him.
16
He asked the scribes, “What are you asking them?”
17
One of the multitude answered, “Teacher, I brought to you my son, who has a mute spirit;
18
and wherever it seizes him, it throws him down; and he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they weren’t able.”
19
He answered him, “Unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to me.”
20
They brought him to him, and when he saw him, immediately the spirit convulsed him and he fell on the ground, wallowing and foaming at the mouth.
21
He asked his father, “How long has it been since this has been happening to him?” He said, “From childhood.
22
Often it has cast him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”
23
Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”
24
Immediately the father of the child cried out with tears, “I believe. Help my unbelief!”
25
When Jesus saw that a multitude came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to him, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again!”
26
After crying out and convulsing him greatly, it came out of him. The boy became like one dead, so much that most of them said, “He is dead.”
27
But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him up; and he arose.
28
When he had come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we cast it out?”
29
He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but by prayer and fasting.”
30
They went out from there and passed through Galilee. He didn’t want anyone to know it,
31
for he was teaching his disciples, and said to them, “The Son of Man is being handed over to the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, on the third day he will rise again.”
32
But they didn’t understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him.
33
He came to Capernaum, and when he was in the house he asked them, “What were you arguing among yourselves on the way?”
34
But they were silent, for they had disputed with one another on the way about who was the greatest.
35
He sat down and called the twelve; and he said to them, “If any man wants to be first, he shall be last of all, and servant of all.”
36
He took a little child and set him in the middle of them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them,
37
“Whoever receives one such little child in my name receives me; and whoever receives me, doesn’t receive me, but him who sent me.”
38
John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone who doesn’t follow us casting out demons in your name; and we forbade him, because he doesn’t follow us.”
39
But Jesus said, “Don’t forbid him, for there is no one who will do a mighty work in my name and be able quickly to speak evil of me.
40
For whoever is not against us is on our side.
41
For whoever will give you a cup of water to drink in my name because you are Christ’s, most certainly I tell you, he will in no way lose his reward.
42
“Whoever will cause one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him if he were thrown into the sea with a millstone hung around his neck.
43
If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having your two hands to go into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire,
44
‘where their worm doesn’t die, and the fire is not quenched.’
45
If your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life lame, rather than having your two feet to be cast into Gehenna, into the fire that will never be quenched—
46
‘where their worm doesn’t die, and the fire is not quenched.’
47
If your eye causes you to stumble, throw it out. It is better for you to enter into God’s Kingdom with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the Gehenna of fire,
48
‘where their worm doesn’t die, and the fire is not quenched.’
49
For everyone will be salted with fire, and every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt.
50
Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltiness, with what will you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”

Glória no alto, fracasso em baixo

Marcos contrapõe a voz do monte ao vale, onde os discípulos não conseguem expulsar o espírito e Jesus lhes chama geração incrédula. O clamor do pai, "Creio; ajuda a minha incredulidade" (versículo 24), nomeia a falha que todo o capítulo examina.
