Mateus 14
O capítulo abre com uma evocação do passado: Herodes, o tetrarca, ao ouvir falar de Jesus, receia que João Baptista tenha ressuscitado, e segue-se o relato terrível da decapitação de João a pedido da filha de Herodias. Ao sabê-lo, Jesus retira-se de barco para um lugar deserto. A multidão segue-o a pé, e o dia desagua na alimentação dos cinco mil com cinco pães e dois peixes, e depois na travessia nocturna em que Jesus anda sobre o mar e Pedro vacila.

Naquele tempo, Herodes, o tetrarca, ouviu as notícias a respeito de Jesus,

e disse aos seus servos: “Este é João Batista. Ele ressuscitou dos mortos. É por isso que esses poderes operam nele.”

Pois Herodes havia prendido João, amarrado-o e colocado na prisão por causa de Herodias, mulher de seu irmão Filipe.

Pois João lhe dizia: “Não lhe é lícito tê-la.”
- 5
Embora quisesse matá-lo, ele temia a multidão, porque o consideravam um profeta.
- 6
Mas, quando chegou o aniversário de Herodes, a filha de Herodias dançou no meio deles e agradou a Herodes.
- 7
Por isso, ele prometeu sob juramento dar-lhe qualquer coisa que ela pedisse.
- 8
Ela, sendo instigada por sua mãe, disse: “Dê-me aqui, numa bandeja, a cabeça de João Batista.”

O rei ficou triste, mas por causa dos seus juramentos e dos que estavam sentados à mesa com ele, ordenou que lhe fosse dada,
- 10
e mandou decapitar João na prisão.

A cabeça dele foi trazida numa bandeja e dada à jovem; e ela a levou para sua mãe.
- 12
Os discípulos dele vieram, levaram o corpo e o sepultaram. Depois, foram e contaram a Jesus.

Quando Jesus ouviu isso, retirou-se dali num barco para um lugar deserto, à parte. Quando as multidões ouviram isso, seguiram-no a pé desde as cidades.

Jesus saiu e viu uma grande multidão. Ele teve compaixão deles e curou os seus doentes.
- 15
Ao cair da tarde, os seus discípulos aproximaram-se dele, dizendo: “Este lugar é deserto, e a hora já está avançada. Despeça as multidões, para que possam ir aos povoados e comprar comida para si mesmas.”

Mas Jesus lhes disse: “Eles não precisam ir embora. Deem-lhes vocês algo para comer.”
- 17
Eles lhe disseram: “Nós só temos aqui cinco pães e dois peixes.”
- 18
Ele disse: “Tragam-nos aqui para mim.”
- 19
Ele ordenou que as multidões se assentassem na grama; e tomando os cinco pães e os dois peixes, e olhando para o céu, ele os abençoou, partiu e deu os pães aos discípulos; e os discípulos deram às multidões.

Todos comeram e ficaram satisfeitos. Eles recolheram doze cestos cheios dos pedaços que sobraram.

Os que comeram foram cerca de cinco mil homens, além de mulheres e crianças.

Imediatamente Jesus fez com que os discípulos entrassem no barco e fossem adiante dele para o outro lado, enquanto ele despedia as multidões.

Depois de despedir as multidões, ele subiu ao monte, à parte, para orar. Ao cair da tarde, ele estava ali sozinho.

Mas o barco já estava no meio do mar, açoitado pelas ondas, pois o vento era contrário.
- 25
Na quarta vigília da noite, Jesus foi até eles, andando sobre o mar.

Quando os discípulos o viram andando sobre o mar, ficaram apavorados, dizendo: “É um fantasma!” e gritaram de medo.

Mas imediatamente Jesus falou com eles, dizendo: “Coragem! Sou eu! Não tenham medo.”
- 28
Pedro lhe respondeu e disse: “Senhor, se é você, mande-me ir até você sobre as águas.”
- 29
Ele disse: “Venha!” Pedro desceu do barco e andou sobre as águas para ir até Jesus.
- 30
Mas, quando viu que o vento era forte, teve medo e, começando a afundar, gritou, dizendo: “Senhor, salva-me!”
- 31
Imediatamente Jesus estendeu a mão, segurou-o e lhe disse: “Homem de pequena fé, por que você duvidou?”

Quando eles subiram no barco, o vento cessou.

Os que estavam no barco vieram e o adoraram, dizendo: “Verdadeiramente você é o Filho de Deus!”

Depois de atravessarem, chegaram à terra de Genesaré.
- 35
Quando os homens daquele lugar o reconheceram, mandaram avisar por toda aquela região ao redor e trouxeram-lhe todos os que estavam doentes;

e imploravam-lhe que pudessem apenas tocar na orla do seu manto. E todos os que a tocaram ficaram curados.

At that time, Herod the tetrarch heard the report concerning Jesus,
- 2
and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptizer. He is risen from the dead. That is why these powers work in him.”

For Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife.
- 4
For John said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
- 5
When he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.
- 6
But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced among them and pleased Herod.
- 7
Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she should ask.
- 8
She, being prompted by her mother, said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptizer.”
- 9
The king was grieved, but for the sake of his oaths and of those who sat at the table with him, he commanded it to be given,
- 10
and he sent and beheaded John in the prison.
- 11
His head was brought on a platter and given to the young lady; and she brought it to her mother.
- 12
His disciples came, took the body, and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.
- 13
Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place apart. When the multitudes heard it, they followed him on foot from the cities.

Jesus went out, and he saw a great multitude. He had compassion on them and healed their sick.
- 15
When evening had come, his disciples came to him, saying, “This place is deserted, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves food.”

But Jesus said to them, “They don’t need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
- 17
They told him, “We only have here five loaves and two fish.”
- 18
He said, “Bring them here to me.”
- 19
He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes.

They all ate and were filled. They took up twelve baskets full of that which remained left over from the broken pieces.
- 21
Those who ate were about five thousand men, in addition to women and children.
- 22
Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

After he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain by himself to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone.
- 24
But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.

In the fourth watch of the night, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.
- 26
When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It’s a ghost!” and they cried out for fear.
- 27
But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Cheer up! It is I! Don’t be afraid.”
- 28
Peter answered him and said, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters.”
- 29
He said, “Come!” Peter stepped down from the boat and walked on the waters to come to Jesus.
- 30
But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”

Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
- 32
When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased.
- 33
Those who were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying, “You are truly the Son of God!”

When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.
- 35
When the people of that place recognized him, they sent into all that surrounding region and brought to him all who were sick;
- 36
and they begged him that they might just touch the fringe of his garment. As many as touched it were made whole.
De um banquete mortal ao pão que se multiplica
O banquete de aniversário de Herodes acaba com uma cabeça num prato (vv. 6-11); o contraste com Jesus a alimentar uma multidão sobre a relva é deliberado. Uma mesa tira a vida, a outra sustém-na.
Sobre a água, Pedro caminha até ver o vento, afunda-se e clama; Jesus segura-o e pergunta-lhe porque duvidou (vv. 28-31). A resposta no barco é adoração: tu és o Filho de Deus.
