Provérbios 30
Entra uma voz nova: as palavras de Agur, filho de Jaque (v.1), que começa por se confessar o mais ignorante dos homens (v.2) e lança perguntas sem resposta sobre quem ajuntou o vento e prendeu as águas (v.4). Pede nem pobreza nem riqueza, apenas o pão necessário (v.8). Convém reparar na viragem para os enigmas numerados: o que nunca se sacia, o que é maravilhoso de mais, os animais pequenos e sábios.

“Certamente eu sou o mais ignorante dos homens, e não tenho o entendimento de um homem.

Não aprendi a sabedoria, nem possuo o conhecimento do Santo.

Quem subiu aos céus e desceu? Quem reuniu o vento em seus punhos? Quem amarrou as águas na sua veste? Quem estabeleceu todos os confins da terra? Qual é o seu nome, e qual é o nome do seu filho, se é que você sabe?

“Toda palavra de Deus é pura. Ele é um escudo para os que nele se refugiam.

Não acrescente nada às suas palavras, para que ele não o repreenda, e você seja achado mentiroso.

“Duas coisas te pedi. Não as negues a mim antes que eu morra.

Afasta para longe de mim a falsidade e a mentira. Não me dês nem a pobreza nem as riquezas. Alimenta-me com a porção de pão que me é necessária,

para que eu não me farte, e te negue, e diga: ‘Quem é o SENHOR?’ ou para que não empobreça, e roube, e assim profane o nome do meu Deus.

“Não calunie o servo perante o seu senhor, para que ele não o amaldiçoe, e você seja considerado culpado.

Há uma geração que amaldiçoa o seu pai, e não abençoa a sua mãe.

Há uma geração que é pura aos seus próprios olhos, mas que não foi lavada da sua imundícia.

Há uma geração, oh quão altivos são os seus olhos! As suas pálpebras estão sempre erguidas.

Há uma geração cujos dentes são como espadas, e as suas mandíbulas como facas, para devorar da terra os pobres, e os necessitados dentre os homens.

“A sanguessuga tem duas filhas: ‘Dá, dá.’ “Há três coisas que nunca se fartam; quatro que nunca dizem: ‘Basta!’:

O Seol, o ventre estéril, a terra que não se farta de água, e o fogo que nunca diz: ‘Basta!’

“O olho que zomba do seu pai, e despreza a obediência à sua mãe, os corvos do vale o arrancarão, e as águias novas o devorarão.

“Há três coisas que são maravilhosas demais para mim, quatro que não consigo entender:

O caminho da águia no ar, o caminho da serpente sobre a rocha, o caminho do navio no meio do mar, e o caminho do homem com a donzela.

“Assim é o caminho da mulher adúltera: Ela come e limpa a sua boca, e diz: ‘Não fiz nada de errado.’

“Por três coisas a terra treme, e por quatro, não pode suportar:

Pelo servo quando se torna rei, pelo tolo quando se farta de comida,

pela mulher não amada quando se casa, e pela serva que se torna herdeira da sua senhora.

“Há quatro coisas que são pequenas na terra, mas são extremamente sábias:

As formigas não são um povo forte, contudo providenciam a sua comida no verão.

Os arganazes são um povo fraco, contudo constroem as suas casas nas rochas.

Os gafanhotos não têm rei, contudo marcham em fileiras.
- 28
O lagarto você pode pegar com as mãos, contudo ele está nos palácios dos reis.

“Há três coisas que são majestosas no seu andar, quatro que têm passos majestosos:

O leão, que é o mais forte entre os animais, e não recua diante de nenhum;

o galgo; o bode; e o rei contra quem não há rebelião.

“Se você agiu como tolo ao exaltar a si mesmo, ou se você planejou o mal, ponha a mão sobre a sua boca.
- 33
Pois assim como o bater do leite produz manteiga, e o torcer do nariz produz sangue, assim o provocar a ira produz contendas.”

Who has ascended up into heaven, and descended? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has bound the waters in his garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name, if you know?

“Every word of God is flawless. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

Don’t you add to his words, lest he reprove you, and you be found a liar.

“Two things I have asked of you. Don’t deny me before I die.
- 8
Remove far from me falsehood and lies. Give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me with the food that is needful for me,

lest I be full, deny you, and say, ‘Who is the LORD?’ or lest I be poor, and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.

“Don’t slander a servant to his master, lest he curse you, and you be held guilty.
- 11
There is a generation that curses their father, and doesn’t bless their mother.

There is a generation that is pure in their own eyes, yet are not washed from their filthiness.
- 13
There is a generation, oh how lofty are their eyes! Their eyelids are lifted up.
- 14
There is a generation whose teeth are like swords, and their jaws like knives, to devour the poor from the earth, and the needy from among men.

“The leech has two daughters: ‘Give, give.’ “There are three things that are never satisfied; four that don’t say, ‘Enough!’:

Sheol, the barren womb, the earth that is not satisfied with water, and the fire that doesn’t say, ‘Enough!’

“The eye that mocks at his father, and scorns obedience to his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, the young eagles shall eat it.

“There are three things which are too amazing for me, four which I don’t understand:
- 19
The way of an eagle in the air, the way of a serpent on a rock, the way of a ship in the middle of the sea, and the way of a man with a maiden.

“So is the way of an adulterous woman: She eats and wipes her mouth, and says, ‘I have done nothing wrong.’

“For three things the earth trembles, and under four, it can’t bear up:

For a servant when he is king, a fool when he is filled with food,

for an unloved woman when she is married, and a servant who is heir to her mistress.

“There are four things which are little on the earth, but they are exceedingly wise:

The ants are not a strong people, yet they provide their food in the summer.

The hyraxes are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks.

The locusts have no king, yet they advance in ranks.
- 28
You can catch a lizard with your hands, yet it is in kings’ palaces.

“There are three things which are stately in their march, four which are stately in going:
- 30
The lion, which is mightiest among animals, and doesn’t turn away for any;
- 31
the greyhound; the male goat; and the king against whom there is no rising up.

“If you have done foolishly in lifting up yourself, or if you have thought evil, put your hand over your mouth.
- 33
For as the churning of milk produces butter, and the wringing of the nose produces blood, so the forcing of wrath produces strife.”
Os ditados numéricos
A partir do v.15 o capítulo corre com o padrão de 'três coisas, quatro coisas'. As filhas da sanguessuga clamam 'Dá, dá'; o Seol, a madre estéril, a terra seca e o fogo nunca se saciam (v.15-16). Quatro maravilhas não deixam rasto: a águia, a serpente, o navio e o homem com a donzela (v.18-19). Seguem-se quatro animais pequenos mas sábios: formigas, coelhos, gafanhotos, lagartixa (v.24-28). A forma ensina por acumulação, conduzindo o leitor à surpresa do último elemento.
