Salmos 89
Uma longa meditação sobre o pacto que Deus jurou a David: uma descendência firmada para sempre e um trono tão duradouro como o sol e a lua. A primeira parte canta essa promessa jurada e o Senhor que domina o mar revolto e despedaçou Raabe. Depois, no versículo 38, o tom quebra-se.

Cantarei do amor leal do SENHOR para sempre. Com a minha boca, farei conhecida a tua fidelidade a todas as gerações.

Pois eu declaro: “O amor está firmado para sempre. Tu estabeleceste os céus. A tua fidelidade está neles.”

“Fiz uma aliança com o meu escolhido, jurei a Davi, meu servo:
- 4
‘Estabelecerei a tua descendência para sempre, e edificarei o teu trono para todas as gerações.’” Selá.
- 5
Os céus louvarão as tuas maravilhas, SENHOR, e também a tua fidelidade na assembleia dos santos.

Pois quem nos céus pode ser comparado ao SENHOR? Quem entre os seres celestiais é semelhante ao SENHOR,

um Deus muito temível no conselho dos santos, a ser temido acima de todos os que estão ao seu redor?

SENHOR, Deus dos Exércitos, quem é poderoso como tu? SENHOR, a tua fidelidade está ao teu redor.

Tu dominas o ímpeto do mar. Quando as suas ondas se levantam, tu as acalmas.

Tu despedaçaste a Raabe, como a um dos mortos. Tu espalhaste os teus inimigos com o teu braço forte.

Os céus são teus. A terra também é tua, o mundo e a sua plenitude. Tu os fundaste.

Tu criaste o norte e o sul. Tabor e Hermom se alegram no teu nome.

Tu tens um braço poderoso. A tua mão é forte, e a tua destra é exaltada.

Justiça e direito são o alicerce do teu trono. Amor leal e verdade vão adiante da tua face.

Bem-aventurado o povo que aprende a te aclamar. Eles andam na luz da tua presença, SENHOR.

Em teu nome eles se alegram o dia todo. Na tua justiça, eles são exaltados.

Pois tu és a glória da força deles. No teu favor, o nosso poder será exaltado.

Pois o nosso escudo pertence ao SENHOR, o nosso rei, ao Santo de Israel.

Então falaste em visão aos teus santos, e disseste: “Dei força ao guerreiro. Exaltei um jovem dentre o povo.

Encontrei Davi, meu servo. Eu o ungi com o meu santo óleo,
- 21
com quem a minha mão será firmada. O meu braço também o fortalecerá.
- 22
Nenhum inimigo o extorquirá. Nenhum homem ímpio o oprimirá.
- 23
Esmagarei os seus adversários diante dele, e ferirei aqueles que o odeiam.
- 24
Mas a minha fidelidade e o meu amor leal estarão com ele. Em meu nome, o seu poder será exaltado.
- 25
Também porei a sua mão sobre o mar, e a sua destra sobre os rios.
- 26
Ele clamará a mim: ‘Tu és meu Pai, meu Deus, e a rocha da minha salvação!’
- 27
Eu também o nomearei meu primogênito, o mais elevado dos reis da terra.
- 28
Guardarei o meu amor leal por ele para sempre. A minha aliança ficará firme com ele.
- 29
Também farei a sua descendência durar para sempre, e o seu trono como os dias do céu.
- 30
Se os seus filhos abandonarem a minha lei, e não andarem nas minhas ordenanças;
- 31
se quebrarem os meus estatutos, e não guardarem os meus mandamentos;
- 32
então punirei o seu pecado com a vara, e a sua iniquidade com açoites.
- 33
Mas não retirarei totalmente dele o meu amor leal, nem permitirei que a minha fidelidade falhe.

Não quebrarei a minha aliança, nem alterarei o que os meus lábios pronunciaram.
- 35
Uma vez jurei pela minha santidade; não mentirei a Davi.
- 36
A sua descendência durará para sempre, o seu trono como o sol diante de mim.
- 37
Será estabelecido para sempre como a lua, a fiel testemunha no céu.” Selá.

Mas tu rejeitaste e desprezaste. Tu te iraste contra o teu ungido.

Tu renunciaste à aliança do teu servo. Tu profanaste a sua coroa no pó.

Tu derrubaste todos os seus muros. Tu reduziste a ruínas as suas fortalezas.
- 41
Todos os que passam pelo caminho o roubam. Ele se tornou uma vergonha para os seus vizinhos.

Tu exaltaste a destra dos seus adversários. Tu fizeste todos os seus inimigos se alegrarem.

Sim, tu fizeste recuar o fio da sua espada, e não o sustentaste na batalha.

Tu puseste fim ao seu esplendor, e lançaste o seu trono por terra.

Tu encurtaste os dias da sua juventude. Tu o cobriste de vergonha. Selá.

Até quando, SENHOR? Te esconderás para sempre? A tua ira arderá como fogo?

Lembra-te de quão curto é o meu tempo; para que vaidade criaste todos os filhos dos homens!

Que homem há que viva e não veja a morte, que livre a sua alma do poder do Seol? Selá.

Senhor, onde estão os teus antigos atos de amor leal, que juraste a Davi na tua fidelidade?

Lembra-te, Senhor, da afronta dos teus servos, de como levo em meu coração as zombarias de todos os povos poderosos,

com as quais os teus inimigos têm zombado, SENHOR, com as quais têm zombado dos passos do teu ungido.

I will sing of the loving kindness of the LORD forever. With my mouth, I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.

I indeed declare, “Love stands firm forever. You established the heavens. Your faithfulness is in them.”

“I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David, my servant,

‘I will establish your offspring forever, and build up your throne to all generations.’” Selah.

The heavens will praise your wonders, LORD, your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones.

For who in the skies can be compared to the LORD? Who among the sons of the heavenly beings is like the LORD,
- 7
a very awesome God in the council of the holy ones, to be feared above all those who are around him?
- 8
LORD, God of Armies, who is a mighty one, like you? LORD, your faithfulness is around you.
- 9
You rule the pride of the sea. When its waves rise up, you calm them.
- 10
You have broken Rahab in pieces, like one of the slain. You have scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.
- 11
The heavens are yours. The earth also is yours, the world and its fullness. You have founded them.
- 12
You have created the north and the south. Tabor and Hermon rejoice in your name.
- 13
You have a mighty arm. Your hand is strong, and your right hand is exalted.
- 14
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne. Loving kindness and truth go before your face.
- 15
Blessed are the people who learn to acclaim you. They walk in the light of your presence, LORD.
- 16
In your name they rejoice all day. In your righteousness, they are exalted.
- 17
For you are the glory of their strength. In your favor, our horn will be exalted.
- 18
For our shield belongs to the LORD, our king to the Holy One of Israel.
- 19
Then you spoke in vision to your saints, and said, “I have given strength to the warrior. I have exalted a young man from the people.
- 20
I have found David, my servant. I have anointed him with my holy oil,
- 21
with whom my hand shall be established. My arm will also strengthen him.
- 22
No enemy will tax him. No wicked man will oppress him.
- 23
I will beat down his adversaries before him, and strike those who hate him.
- 24
But my faithfulness and my loving kindness will be with him. In my name, his horn will be exalted.
- 25
I will set his hand also on the sea, and his right hand on the rivers.
- 26
He will call to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the rock of my salvation!’
- 27
I will also appoint him my firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.
- 28
I will keep my loving kindness for him forever more. My covenant will stand firm with him.
- 29
I will also make his offspring endure forever, and his throne as the days of heaven.
- 30
If his children forsake my law, and don’t walk in my ordinances;
- 31
if they break my statutes, and don’t keep my commandments;
- 32
then I will punish their sin with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.
- 33
But I will not completely take my loving kindness from him, nor allow my faithfulness to fail.
- 34
I will not break my covenant, nor alter what my lips have uttered.
- 35
Once I have sworn by my holiness, I will not lie to David.
- 36
His offspring will endure forever, his throne like the sun before me.
- 37
It will be established forever like the moon, the faithful witness in the sky.” Selah.
- 38
But you have rejected and spurned. You have been angry with your anointed.
- 39
You have renounced the covenant of your servant. You have defiled his crown in the dust.
- 40
You have broken down all his hedges. You have brought his strongholds to ruin.
- 41
All who pass by the way rob him. He has become a reproach to his neighbors.
- 42
You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries. You have made all of his enemies rejoice.
- 43
Yes, you turn back the edge of his sword, and haven’t supported him in battle.
- 44
You have ended his splendor, and thrown his throne down to the ground.
- 45
You have shortened the days of his youth. You have covered him with shame. Selah.
- 46
How long, LORD? Will you hide yourself forever? Will your wrath burn like fire?
- 47
Remember how short my time is, for what vanity you have created all the children of men!
- 48
What man is he who shall live and not see death, who shall deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah.

Lord, where are your former loving kindnesses, which you swore to David in your faithfulness?
- 50
Remember, Lord, the reproach of your servants, how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the mighty peoples,
- 51
With which your enemies have mocked, LORD, with which they have mocked the footsteps of your anointed one.
- 52
Blessed be the LORD forever more. Amen, and Amen.
Quando o juramento parece quebrado
A viragem está no versículo 38: rejeitaste e desprezaste, iraste-te contra o teu ungido; um versículo depois a sua coroa é profanada no pó. O mesmo Deus que jurou a David um trono eterno deixa cair-lhe as fortalezas e alegra os inimigos, e o salmo pergunta onde estão as antigas bondades.
O versículo 52 encerra o Livro III do saltério com uma doxologia, Amém e Amém, não porque a crise se tenha resolvido, mas porque é ali que termina essa terceira secção, com a pergunta ainda em aberto.
