1 Timothy 1
Paul leaves Timothy at Ephesus with a single charge: silence the teachers pushing myths and endless genealogies, because the real aim of instruction is love from a pure heart. The doctrinal fight frames the whole letter. Watch how Paul turns the argument inward. He lists the lawless the law is meant to expose, then names himself chief of sinners, a former blasphemer shown mercy. The chapter ends handing Timothy a battle order and naming two men, Hymenaeus and Alexander.

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ according to the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ our hope,

to Timothy, my true child in faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

As I urged you when I was going into Macedonia, stay at Ephesus that you might command certain men not to teach a different doctrine,
- 4
and not to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than God’s stewardship, which is in faith.

But the goal of this command is love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith,
- 6
from which things some, having missed the mark, have turned away to vain talking,
- 7
desiring to be teachers of the law, though they understand neither what they say nor about what they strongly affirm.

But we know that the law is good if a person uses it lawfully,
- 9
as knowing this, that law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

for the sexually immoral, for homosexuals, for slave-traders, for liars, for perjurers, and for any other thing contrary to the sound doctrine,

according to the Good News of the glory of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

I thank him who enabled me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he counted me faithful, appointing me to service,
- 13
although I used to be a blasphemer, a persecutor, and insolent. However, I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.

The grace of our Lord abounded exceedingly with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

The saying is faithful and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.

However, for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first, Jesus Christ might display all his patience for an example of those who were going to believe in him for eternal life.

Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

I commit this instruction to you, my child Timothy, according to the prophecies which were given to you before, that by them you may wage the good warfare,
- 19
holding faith and a good conscience, which some having thrust away made a shipwreck concerning the faith,
- 20
of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they might be taught not to blaspheme.

Como eu lhe roguei quando estava partindo para a Macedônia, permaneça em Éfeso para que você possa ordenar a certos homens que não ensinem uma doutrina diferente,

e que não prestem atenção a mitos e genealogias intermináveis, que causam disputas em vez de promover a administração de Deus, que se fundamenta na fé.

Mas o objetivo deste mandamento é o amor que procede de um coração puro, de uma boa consciência e de uma fé sincera,
- 6
das quais coisas alguns, tendo errado o alvo, desviaram-se para o falatório inútil,
- 7
desejando ser mestres da lei, embora não entendam nem o que dizem, nem as coisas que afirmam com tanta convicção.

Mas sabemos que a lei é boa, se alguém a usar de forma legítima,
- 9
sabendo disto: que a lei não é feita para o justo, mas para os transgressores e insubordinados, para os ímpios e pecadores, para os impuros e profanos, para os assassinos de pais e assassinos de mães, para os homicidas,
- 10
para os imorais sexuais, para os homossexuais, para os traficantes de escravos, para os mentirosos, para os perjuros, e para qualquer outra coisa contrária à sã doutrina,
- 11
segundo as Boas Novas da glória do Deus bendito, que foram confiadas a mim.

Dou graças àquele que me capacitou, a Cristo Jesus, nosso Senhor, porque me considerou fiel, designando-me para o serviço,
- 13
embora eu fosse antes um blasfemo, um perseguidor e insolente. Contudo, alcancei misericórdia, porque fiz isso por ignorância, na incredulidade.

A graça de nosso Senhor transbordou abundantemente, com a fé e o amor que há em Cristo Jesus.
- 15
Esta palavra é fiel e digna de toda aceitação: que Cristo Jesus veio ao mundo para salvar os pecadores, dos quais eu sou o principal.

Contudo, por esta causa alcancei misericórdia, para que em mim primeiro, Jesus Cristo pudesse demonstrar toda a sua paciência, como exemplo para aqueles que haveriam de crer nele para a vida eterna.

Ora, ao Rei eterno, imortal, invisível, ao único Deus sábio, sejam honra e glória para todo o sempre. Amém.

Eu lhe confio esta instrução, meu filho Timóteo, de acordo com as profecias que foram dadas anteriormente a seu respeito, para que, por meio delas, você combata o bom combate,

mantendo a fé e a boa consciência, as quais alguns, tendo rejeitado, naufragaram na fé.

Entre esses estão Himeneu e Alexandre, os quais entreguei a Satanás, para que aprendam a não blasfemar.
Law for the lawless, mercy for the chief
Verses 8-11 grant the law is good when used lawfully, then list whom it targets. Paul immediately pivots to verses 12-16, placing himself in that list as the worst case so his rescue becomes proof of patience for everyone who would later believe.
The closing verses arm Timothy for warfare with faith and a good conscience, and warn that some have made shipwreck of both. That image of conscience as a hull that can be wrecked sets up the conduct demands that fill chapters 2 through 6.
