2 Timothy 2

Paul piles up images of disciplined work: the soldier who avoids civilian entanglements, the athlete who must compete by the rules, the hardworking farmer who gets first share. Each one answers a single charge in verse 2, that Timothy entrust the message to faithful men who can teach others. The second half turns to handling words. Paul names Hymenaeus and Philetus, who claimed the resurrection had already happened, and likens their talk to spreading gangrene against God's firm foundation.

You therefore, my child, be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
2
The things which you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit the same things to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
3
You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.
4
No soldier on duty entangles himself in the affairs of life, that he may please him who enrolled him as a soldier.
5
Also, if anyone competes in athletics, he isn’t crowned unless he has competed by the rules.
6
The farmer who labors must be the first to get a share of the crops.
7
Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things.
8
Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, of the offspring of David, according to my Good News,
9
in which I suffer hardship to the point of chains as a criminal. But God’s word isn’t chained.
10
Therefore I endure all things for the chosen ones’ sake, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
11
This saying is trustworthy: “For if we died with him, we will also live with him.
12
If we endure, we will also reign with him. If we deny him, he also will deny us.
13
If we are faithless, he remains faithful; for he can’t deny himself.”
14
Remind them of these things, charging them in the sight of the Lord that they don’t argue about words to no profit, to the subverting of those who hear.
15
Give diligence to present yourself approved by God, a workman who doesn’t need to be ashamed, properly handling the Word of Truth.
16
But shun empty chatter, for it will go further in ungodliness,
17
and those words will consume like gangrene, of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus:
18
men who have erred concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past, and overthrowing the faith of some.
19
However, God’s firm foundation stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let every one who names the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness.”
20
Now in a large house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of clay. Some are for honor and some for dishonor.
21
If anyone therefore purges himself from these, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, and suitable for the master’s use, prepared for every good work.
22
Flee from youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
23
But refuse foolish and ignorant questionings, knowing that they generate strife.
24
The Lord’s servant must not quarrel, but be gentle toward all, able to teach, patient,
25
in gentleness correcting those who oppose him. Perhaps God may give them repentance leading to a full knowledge of the truth,
26
and they may recover themselves out of the devil’s snare, having been taken captive by him to do his will.

As coisas que você ouviu de mim entre muitas testemunhas, confie-as a homens fiéis que sejam capazes de ensinar também a outros.

Você, portanto, deve suportar as aflições como um bom soldado de Cristo Jesus.

Nenhum soldado em serviço se envolve com os negócios desta vida, para que possa agradar àquele que o alistou como soldado.

Da mesma forma, se alguém compete no atletismo, não é coroado a menos que compita de acordo com as regras.

O lavrador que trabalha arduamente deve ser o primeiro a receber uma parte das colheitas.

Considere o que eu digo, e que o Senhor lhe dê entendimento em todas as coisas.

Lembre-se de Jesus Cristo, ressuscitado dentre os mortos, da descendência de Davi, de acordo com o meu Evangelho,

pelo qual sofro aflições até o ponto de ser acorrentado como um criminoso. Mas a palavra de Deus não está acorrentada.

Portanto, suporto todas as coisas por amor aos escolhidos, para que eles também possam obter a salvação que está em Cristo Jesus com glória eterna.

Esta palavra é digna de confiança: “Pois se morremos com ele, também viveremos com ele.
12
Se perseverarmos, também reinaremos com ele. Se o negarmos, ele também nos negará.
13
Se formos infiéis, ele permanece fiel; pois ele não pode negar a si mesmo.”

Lembre-os destas coisas, advertindo-os diante do Senhor para que não discutam sobre palavras sem nenhum proveito, o que serve apenas para a ruína dos que ouvem.
15
Esforce-se para apresentar-se a Deus aprovado, como um obreiro que não tem do que se envergonhar, que maneja bem a Palavra da Verdade.

Mas evite os falatórios inúteis, pois eles levarão a uma impiedade ainda maior,
17
e essas palavras corroerão como gangrena. Entre eles estão Himeneu e Fileto:

homens que se desviaram da verdade, dizendo que a ressurreição já passou, e estão destruindo a fé de alguns.
19
No entanto, o firme fundamento de Deus permanece, tendo este selo: “O Senhor conhece os que são seus,” e, “Que todo aquele que invoca o nome do Senhor afaste-se da injustiça.”
20
Ora, em uma grande casa não há apenas vasos de ouro e de prata, mas também de madeira e de barro. Alguns são para honra e outros para desonra.
21
Portanto, se alguém se purificar destas coisas, será um vaso para honra, santificado e útil para o uso do Senhor, preparado para toda boa obra.
22
Fuja das paixões da juventude; mas siga a justiça, a fé, o amor e a paz, com aqueles que invocam o Senhor de coração puro.
23
Mas rejeite as questões tolas e ignorantes, sabendo que elas geram contendas.
24
O servo do Senhor não deve brigar, mas ser gentil para com todos, apto para ensinar, paciente,
25
corrigindo com mansidão os que se opõem a ele. Talvez Deus lhes conceda o arrependimento que conduz ao pleno conhecimento da verdade,
26
e eles possam voltar a si e escapar da armadilha do diabo, tendo sido levados cativos por ele para fazer a sua vontade.

Vessels in a large house

Verse 20 shifts metaphor: a great house holds vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some not. The point is not that some people are disposable but that a person can purge himself to become 'a vessel for honor.'

This reframes the earlier warning about quarrels over words. Rather than winning arguments, Timothy is told to flee youthful passions, pursue righteousness, and correct opponents with gentleness, hoping God grants them repentance.
