Exodus 24

The laws are spoken; now they are ratified. Moses reads the covenant aloud, the people answer twice, "All that the LORD has said we will do," and Moses seals the agreement by dashing half the sacrificial blood on the altar and half on the people. Then the scene climbs the mountain. Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu and seventy elders see the God of Israel, with sapphire-like pavement under his feet, and they eat and drink, before Moses alone enters the cloud for forty days.

He said to Moses, “Come up to the LORD, you, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel; and worship from a distance.

Moses alone shall come near to the LORD, but they shall not come near. The people shall not go up with him.”

Moses came and told the people all the LORD’s words, and all the ordinances; and all the people answered with one voice, and said, “All the words which the LORD has spoken will we do.”

Moses wrote all the LORD’s words, then rose up early in the morning and built an altar at the base of the mountain, with twelve pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel.

He sent young men of the children of Israel, who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of cattle to the LORD.

Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar.
7
He took the book of the covenant and read it in the hearing of the people, and they said, “We will do all that the LORD has said, and be obedient.”
8
Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, “Look, this is the blood of the covenant, which the LORD has made with you concerning all these words.”
9
Then Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel went up.
10
They saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was like a paved work of sapphire stone, like the skies for clearness.
11
He didn’t lay his hand on the nobles of the children of Israel. They saw God, and ate and drank.
12
The LORD said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain, and stay here, and I will give you the stone tablets with the law and the commands that I have written, that you may teach them.”
13
Moses rose up with Joshua, his servant, and Moses went up onto God’s Mountain.
14
He said to the elders, “Wait here for us, until we come again to you. Behold, Aaron and Hur are with you. Whoever is involved in a dispute can go to them.”
15
Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain.
16
The LORD’s glory settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. The seventh day he called to Moses out of the middle of the cloud.
17
The appearance of the LORD’s glory was like devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the eyes of the children of Israel.
18
Moses entered into the middle of the cloud, and went up on the mountain; and Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

Ele enviou jovens dos filhos de Israel, que ofereceram holocaustos e sacrificaram ofertas pacíficas de novilhos ao SENHOR.

Moisés pegou metade do sangue e colocou em bacias, e a outra metade do sangue ele aspergiu sobre o altar.

Ele pegou o livro da aliança e o leu aos ouvidos do povo, e eles disseram: “Faremos tudo o que o SENHOR disse, e seremos obedientes.”

Moisés pegou o sangue, aspergiu-o sobre o povo e disse: “Vejam, este é o sangue da aliança que o SENHOR fez com vocês a respeito de todas estas palavras.”

Então subiram Moisés, Arão, Nadabe, Abiú e setenta dos anciãos de Israel.

Eles viram o Deus de Israel. Debaixo de seus pés havia como que um pavimento de pedra de safira , como o próprio céu em clareza.

Ele não estendeu a mão contra os nobres dos filhos de Israel. Eles viram a Deus, e comeram e beberam.

O SENHOR disse a Moisés: “Suba a mim no monte e fique aqui, e eu lhe darei as tábuas de pedra com a lei e os mandamentos que escrevi, para que você os ensine.”

Moisés levantou-se com Josué, seu servo, e Moisés subiu ao Monte de Deus.
14
Ele disse aos anciãos: “Esperem aqui por nós, até que voltemos a vocês. Eis que Arão e Hur estão com vocês. Quem estiver envolvido em uma disputa pode ir a eles.”

Moisés subiu ao monte, e a nuvem cobriu o monte.

A glória do SENHOR repousou sobre o Monte Sinai, e a nuvem o cobriu por seis dias. No sétimo dia, ele chamou Moisés do meio da nuvem.
17
A aparência da glória do SENHOR era como um fogo consumidor no topo do monte, aos olhos dos filhos de Israel.
18
Moisés entrou no meio da nuvem e subiu ao monte; e Moisés esteve no monte quarenta dias e quarenta noites.

A meal in the presence of God

Verse 11 is startling: the elders "saw God, and ate and drank," and he did not lay his hand on them. A covenant meal, not destruction, marks the moment, the relationship the whole code has been building toward.

It also sets up the danger to come. Moses leaves Aaron and Hur in charge (v. 14) and vanishes into devouring-fire glory for forty days, the very absence that, eight chapters on, the people cannot bear and that gives rise to the golden calf.
